Throughout greater Boston, families and individuals are finding out that the YMCA is more than meets the eye. While some seek health and wellness, others depend on the Y for early education, fellowship, support and even daily meals. We positively impact the lives of more than 150,000 individuals each year, inspiring hope for a bright tomorrow. From infants, to teens, parents and seniors, the Y provides a place where everyone can reach his or her fullest potential.

In 2015, the YMCA of Greater Boston continued its legacy of building and maintaining strong partnerships. For example, our partnership with Sun Life Financial and the Boston Celtics grew to include two signature programs designed to raise awareness of, and raise funds in support of, our YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program (YDPP). The Sun Life Dunk for Diabetes program, in partnership with the Boston Celtics, raised $95,000 for the Y, and has provided over $367,000 in funding for YDPP since the program began.

The Y continues to aggressively address the achievement gap. During the summer of 2015, we partnered with BELL (Building Educated Leaders for Life) Power Scholars Academy. This program provided children, K-8, with a curriculum that focused on math and literacy, while also providing fun camp activities. Our Power Scholars Academy set high expectations and provided “scholars” with the resources to meet them. We are expanding this program to serve more children in 2016.

Consistent with our commitment to provide our communities with world-class facilities, the redevelopment of the Parkway Community YMCA (formerly the West Roxbury YMCA) was completed in June 2016. We are excited and pleased to be able to extend our services and programs to more families and individuals in the “Parkway” communities and believe this state-of-the-art YMCA will serve the needs of our members, and the community, for many years to come.

Thanks to our generous donors, members and partners, the Y has provided uplifting opportunities to many across Greater Boston. Inside our Annual Report, you will find a small sampling of the Y’s important work in 2015. Thank you for your support and commitment to our organization and to the greater Boston community. We look forward to continuing our partnerships in order to deepen our impact on the lives, and in the communities, we are blessed to serve.

Sincerely,

James O’S. Morton, Esq.President & CEO

DEAR FRIENDS,

WHILE YOU’RE LIFTING

Page 5: YMCA of Greater Boston - 2015 Annual Report

The YMCA of Greater Boston’s youth development programs are impacting tens of thousands of children and teens each year. From our high quality early education programs, to summer camps, to our teen programs, the Y is there for our kids at every stage of development.

THEY’RE LEARNING

Page 7: YMCA of Greater Boston - 2015 Annual Report

Engaged over 35,000 youth under the age of 18, from swim classes to college preparation.

Nurtured Boston’s children at our 83 child development programs, serving children of all ages.

Ensured that over 5,000 youth participated in literacy activities in our summer day camps.

“I am a single mom. I balance a very busy schedule but I also

want to provide innovative extra-curricular opportunities

for my kids. By enrolling my children in the summer day camp at the YMCA, I was able to maintain my employment and

give a great summer experience to my children.”

SASHA, OAK SQUARE YMCA MEMBER

Page 9: YMCA of Greater Boston - 2015 Annual Report

HE’S STRIVINGChronic diseases and conditions like type 2 diabetes, obesity and heart disease are common, expensive to treat, but preventable. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, chronic diseases are responsible for 7 of 10 deaths each year. The Y is working to make sure that underserved populations have access to healthy living strategies by expanding our range of prevention programs. The Y is doing our part to make Boston a healthier place for all of us.

Page 10: YMCA of Greater Boston - 2015 Annual Report

Added over 3,000 new membership card holders across the Association.

Introduced a new personal training model in our branches to make it more affordable and effective.

Improved the lives of over 650 people with high blood pressure in under-served communities through the REACH (Racial and Ethnic Approach to Community Health) grant.

Expanded the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program from 3 sites to 7 with the help of Boston Medical Center Health Net Plan, Sun Life Financial and the Boston Celtics.

“I look forward to my bi-weekly session with the other Pink Ladies

at the YMCA. The trainers are amazing and patient, and every

week is new and different. I never miss it. It’s such a supportive environment to be around.”
