David Edwards in his book “One Step Closer” shares a poem that was found on the wall of a prison in Atlanta, and the poem written in grease pencil read:

The Eagle And The Wolf There’s a battle between the eagle and the wolf. The eagle inside of me represents everything that is good and pure. And even though it soars through the valleys, it still lays its eggs on the mountain tops. There’s a wolf inside of me. And the wolf preys upon my weaknesses and justifies itself in the presence of the pack. Who will win the war between the eagle and the wolf?

There was a big space and then these words:

“The one that you feed.”

There is power in those words scrawled on that wall. Who wins the battle for your mind? The one you choose to feed. Who wins the battle for your life? The one you choose to build on. Who wins the battle between right and wrong? The one you choose to feed. On what thoughts are you feeding? Are you filling your life with God’s truth, or are you feeding it a steady diet of TV, materialism, and out-of-control habits.

It’s easy to become desensitised and conformed to this world. But God calls us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, to take every thought captive, and to be doers of the Word.

It’s worth a thought.

general news

SAFETY ON OUR CAMPUS ROADSThe safety of our students and all users of our road is

paramount. If driving on campus at any time please adhere to the speed limit of 15km. This ensures that you as a driver can stop immediately if and when needed. Also please be mindful of when you are exiting the gates during pick-up and drop off times. There are students and parents that cross at the exit gate during these times. There is also a pedestrian sign at the exit gate to remind drivers of this. Before moving through the exit gate, check and re-check to ensure that there are no pedestrians crossing.

TRAFFIC ON CAMPUSIf you are driving on campus during pick up and drop off times,

you will notice that there is a third lane that is normally used as an exiting lane. To ensure that traffic continues to flow through this lane, please do not park your vehicle in this lane, even temporarily

and please do not park in between lanes. Keeping the third lane clear would mean we have a clearway for any exiting vehicle and gives access to any emergency vehicle if needed.

PARENT PICK UP AND PARENT DROP OFFS.

A very busy time at school is the pick up and drop off times. We would like to remind our parents and guardians about our 3R’s; Respect, Responsibility and Resilience.

Please show respect by being patient with parents and students, who are moving around the school.

Please respect staff as they direct traffic at the crossings by being patient and wait for the students as they cross the road as directed by the teacher.

Please be responsible by driving through the school property slowly at the designated speed limit 20kmh.

Please be responsible drivers maintaining the safety of students, parents and staff who are on the property.

As parents and guardians we can show we are resilient by being courteous if you are

approached to do the right thing.

We make this request, after a parent reported watching as another impatient parent failed to stop at the crossing as directed by the staff member on duty. This witness was concerned for the safety of the students who were nearly hit by an impatient parent.

Please be aware of others, patience is a much-preferred option to injured students.

YEAR 9 LEARNING FOR LIFE - CAMP BUANGOR

The Year Nine Learning for Life students spent a memorable week at Buangor State National Park from 18 February to 22 February. Sleeping in tents under the stars, with minimal facilities, it was a new and challenging experience for many, but also an exciting and enriching one. Besides an overnight hike in the nearby mountains, activities included teambuilding, learning navigation skills and journaling and reflection time.

Here is what some of the Year Nine’s had to say about their experience:

“The hike seemed like a huge task, especially with our packs on our backs. Camping in tents, cooking, cleaning and doing activities was all part of the experience. It was really fun! I think the best parts about doing the hike were the experiences I had and the views that we saw on the mountain. However, even better than that was reaching the end and the amazing feeling of accomplishment. It was a great start to the Year 9 Learning for Life program.”

- Nathan Winkworth, 9KJ

“Buangor camp provided us with an opportunity and experience like no other. This camp deepened my relationship with others as we faced adversity together. I was put to the test both physically and mentally through an extremely challenging hike, which I loved. This was a great way to start 2019.”

- Isaac Bombuwala, 9 KJ“Buangor was a long

camp, my longest yet. It was five days and four nights. We slept in tents, rather than cabins and we cooked and prepared our own meals, instead of being given food. It was a huge step forward and a new beginning to our Year 9 Learning for Life adventure.”

- Jerry Lam, 9KJ

YEAR 12 GEOGRAPHYEarlier this week, the Year

12 Geography class travelled to Docklands to examine the features of one of Australia’s largest urban renewal projects. Students explored the regions’ current land uses and analysed how and why it has changed over time. Students were also able to analyse how the project has transformed the area from an unused industrial port and a wasteland into a vibrant, modern-day residential and

recreational hub that it is nowadays. Students visited key sights in the area and were able to collect important data to draw conclusions about the social, economic and environmental impacts of the project as well as its effectiveness. A highlight of the day was visiting the District and riding the Melbourne Star Observation Wheel.

YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE 2019

As a part of the Year 10 Career Development program at Gilson College, students are required to undertake a week-long Work Experience placement at an organisation of their choosing. This opportunity will provide students with valuable insights into the industry and workplace in which they wish to pursue in the future.

In 2019, Work Experience placements will occur on:

Monday 24 - Friday 28 June (last week of Term 2).

This Work Experience program aims to:· Develop student’s enterprise skills· Allow for students to

explore potential career options

· Increase student’s self-understanding, maturity, confidence and independence

· Assist students with VCE subject selection by informing their choices, giving context to various subjects

Students are encouraged to contact potential employers early, to avoid missing out on securing a placement in their preferred industries. When approaching potential employers, students should call, email or speak to family contacts to assess if there are vacancies or whether organisations can accept a student for work experience. The submission deadline for Work Experience Arrangement Forms is FRIDAY 31 May.

Thank you to those students who have secured a placement already. If you have any questions, please contact our Career Co-ordinators;

Mr. Cassar ([email protected]) or Ms. Hanley ([email protected])
