http://greenconnections.sfplanning.org Since the February 15, 2012 kick-off event, the Green Connections team has led over 20 outreach events across the City. This effort has helped us to understand your preferred routes to parks as well as your vision for a Green Connection. This board contains both a summary of the these events and an overview of community generated ideas about how a Green Connection could look and feel. Birding at Heron's Head Park Visitacion Valley Greenway Walk WALKS A series of walks hosted by Nature and the City, San Francisco Parks Alliance, and Walk San Francisco. These walks explored what a Green Connection could look like in San Francisco. The walks highlighted projects initiated by both community members and the City. These projects are successful examples of how greening and landscaping, traffic calming, wildlife, and/or community stewardship could be incorporated into the design. Participants were invited to complete a short questionnaire summarizing observations and their vision for a green connection. ECOLOGY THINK TANKS

In April, Nature in the City convened a series of Ecology Think Tanks. Local ecologists, naturalists and city staff were invited to participate and provided feedback on potential habitat corridors, identification of target species and recommendations for plants and landscaping. Opportunities for stewardship, education and demonstration projects were also discussed. The map below summarizes feedback and ideas from these sessions.

PEDESTRIAN CHARRETTE

In July, Walk San Francisco hosted a pedestrian charrette. Walk SF board members, pedestrian planners and city staff were invited to provide feedback on how to could create a network of great walking connections to parks, open space and the waterfront. The map bellow summarizes the ideas and feedback from the charrette.

Favorite Routes

WHAT WE HEARD...

“Better and more continuous pedestrian connections to open space. Also, more signage pointing pedestrians to nearby open space”

“Progress park - great example of community based greening and improvements. More opportunities for community to create public open spaces would improve neighborhoods.”

“No cars, landscaping, trees, gardens, birds, butterflies and kids playing. I want to feel SAFE.”

“I would envision a pedestrian corridor surrounded by really nice landscaping/sidewalk gardens. Birds, etc, optional. Should be safe enough for kids to play and people to walk at night.“

WHAT WE HEARD...

Qualities that make you choose a street to walk along:

~ “Cozy”

~ Trees

~ 4-way stops (“not lights”)

~ Wide sidewalks

~ Community shops, activity, street life, vibrancy

~ View corridors, especially to monuments

~ Clean, litter-free

~ Quiet

Pedestrian barriers:

~ Freeway ramps

~ Nasty crossings

~ Closed crosswalks

~ Streets with more than 3 lanes to cross

~ Proximity to freeway

~ Broken sidewalks

~ Timed lights

~ Multiple turn lanes

~ Construction

~ Steep streets

WHAT WE HEARD...

“Stewardship is critical to success”

“Generally good design for habitat includes appropriate planting for food, breeding, habitation and protection of target species.”

“Key considerations when locating corridors for more sensitive wildlife include: building on existing pockets of habitat (such as mission creek, heron’s head, the presidio) and insuring that the corridor does not present more risks than benefits”

“Other interventions include sculptures and street furniture that serves a habitat function—bee hotels or planters on top of soil that create a moist home for herps and insects.”

Envisioning a Green Conneciton

WHAT ATTRIBUTES WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IN A GREEN CONNECTION?

Online Survey. 450 Participants. February to June 2012.

“I think the three biggest things to helping our city get greener and more enjoyable: would be better transit,

less garbage everywhere and in parks, slow traffic (people are tearing around in their cars).”

“Our neighbors are creating backyard natural plant corridors for birds, bees, butterflies. City could

encourage this with info. Backyards can be wildlife corridors too. Minimal city cost; builds constituency”.

“Plant more fruit trees in public spaces so we can snack as we explore the city!”

“Combine improvements with storm water enhancements.”

“What about a Seniors Green Connection?”

“City needs a grid of bicycle boulevards and cycletracks”

“More stormwater management! The polluted runoff in our streets could be drastically reduced!“

“Connect presidio with Golden Gate along Arguelllo with a Green Connection. Day light creeks and old abandoned right of ways; transform high speed/

high volume auto route like San Jose into greenways; use alley networks (reduced by implementing

green stormwater management techniques such as raingardens and bioawales).”

“Would be great to have a good intuitive bike route to Balboa Park”

“Great project! I’d love to see a focus on people-oriented streets vs car-oriented streets. I feel like

cars have highest priority still, and they make many streets dirty, noisy, and less safe. I’d love to see some more neighborhood style streets like major European

cities”

“More green connections in the Bayview!!!!”

“McLaren is a GREAT park, but so isolated and difficult to get there that I know decades-long SF residents who

haven’t been more than once or twice - if at all”

“Sunday Streets is a great program to get us out on our bikes. It’s lots of fun when the streets are closed,

even temporarily”
