Having grown up in a digital world, kids are inherently tech-savvy. On an average day, a teenager wakes up to his cell phone’s alarm clock, turns on his laptop to check for any updates on his Facebook page and watches a video on his tablet or iPod on the bus on his way to school.

But once he steps off the bus and walks through the door at school, all his technology is shut off, and he’s transported back into a pre-digital world of chalkboards and textbooks. This is a scenario that plays out every morning across the country, with schools implementing zero-tolerance policies on tech devices to prevent texting and playing games during class.

But what if students were allowed, even encouraged, to use these devices? What if schools took advantage of their students’ dependence on electronics and harnessed that affinity into an outlet for educational exploration?

Vision Statement – Technology Plan 2011-2014“Yarbrough students, staff, parents and community are users of technology in everyday life. Yarbrough Public School, working with parents and the community, will fairly and equitably provide educational opportunities for all students to become responsible, life-long learners who are confident and equipped to succeed in a technological world.” Mission Statement – Technology Plan 2011-2014“We believe that technology should be an integral part of the teaching and learning process at Yarbrough Public School. We should all be prepared to live, learn, work and perform in the 21st Century. We therefore expect our administrators, teachers, and students to be technologically literate.”

Practice 1: Shared VisionShared Vision: A shared set of goals, commitments, and practices enacted throughout the school. The shared school vision serves as a basis for decision-making and change (i.e., "How does that decision fit with what we believe in?") and gives individuals an enhanced sense of purpose. They make individuals part of a bigger cause, a cause beyond one’s self. Sergiovanni (2001) emphasizes that "the vision of a school must reflect the hopes and dreams, the needs and interests, the values and beliefs of everyone who has a stake in the school: teachers, parents, and students" (p. 149).

Practice 2: AuthenticityAuthentic teaching refers to learning that is genuine and connected rather than something that is fake and fragmented. Teachers who practice authentically help students connect learning to life. They judge students not by a test but by the quality of their lives. Authentic teaching actively engages students in developing new understandings and knowledge. Researchers found that students learn more when teachers teach authentically; pursue a clear, shared purpose for all students’ learning; engage in collaborative activities to achieve that purpose; and take collective responsibility for student learning (Newmann & Wehlage, 1995; Newmann, 1996, 2003).

Practice 5: Teacher CollaborationCollaboration has been called the single most important factor in sustaining the effort to create a professional learning community (Dufour & Eaker, 1998); and there is evidence of improved student learning in schools with collaborative norms (Lee & Smith, 1996; Little, 1990; Louis, Kruse & Marks, 1996; Newmann & Wehlage, 1995; Schmoker, 1999). Conversations, discussions and debates focused on teaching and learning issues nurture professional growth, build relationships, result in more informed practice and improved student achievement. Working together towards a shared vision for student learning, teachers discuss with colleagues difficult questions such as: How can we talk about and share our best practices? How can we engage in critical study of our practice? How much do we trust each other? Is our teaching authentic? How do we know what students know? How do our practices match what we say we believe in?
