TREASURER’S COMMENTS

The club finances are rolling along asexpected through the summer, runningdown somewhat as we move backtowards the Fall and re-starting dinnerdances.

Our reserves appear to be adequate and well provisioned forthe summer months as we anticipated. But the news forthis summer is unfortunately the passing of Herb Bryant. Igot the news about losing Herb the same way most of you

VOLUME XXXIV ISSUE 7 PAGE 2

did – by email – and it was a shock for Anne and me.Herb was more than just the last SVYC Treasurer whotransferred financial stuff to me almost three yearsago, he was a continuous source of support and humorand I’ll miss that. If ever we ran up against somethingno-one knew how to handle, we called Herb and I wasno exception in calling him and he always straightenedus out. He taught me more than the books and keepingthe Club afloat, he taught me generosity of spirit andhow to loose gracefully at poker.

In the early days, when I took over the books fromHerb, we spent many hours in his and Betty’s homestruggling with numbers and past practices and wealways cracked it because we had humor, persistenceand good spirit.

I’ll miss him dearly, he meant a lot to me and a wholelot to the Club and our members. We’re so sorry foryour loss Betty.

Extending our hearts and condolences to Herb Bryant's "Bride" (as he called Betty), his daughter Nancy and hiswonderful grandchildren and family that he always spoke about with Love and Pride.

Herb was an Icon of this Club, he stood for it's integrity and honor.  Herb and Betty both loved this Club and tried not tomiss anything that was going on, be it meetings, cards, dinner dances and even the yard sales the Even Keels put onevery year.  If there was an event, you could be sure that  Herb and Betty attended, it kept them young and vital; andHerb always had a story whether from the club's past or his life from Texco where he and Betty worked and wouldeventually retire.  They would spend 6 months a year here and joined our Club where Herb was elected Commodoretwice, once int 1990 and again in 1997, then he took over the treasurer's job continuing in that position till 2011 when hefound it too much to handle at that time, he and Betty needed to "slow down".  Now mind you Betty was also veryactive as Secretary and then she took over membership.  They both contributed tremendously to our Club and mentoredthe new people as they arrived. Bill and I were on the receiving end of all of that help and how fortunate  were we tohave ended up with two of the most loving and generous friends we could have.

Herb was never afraid to tackle anything put in front of him and if you needed his help he would be the first one therefor you and especially at the Club.  I don't know many people who knew the ins and outs of our Club like the Bryant's.Ask Betty the criteria/by-laws and she could tell you in a heartbeat!

I could go on, and on but I think we all agree that Herb was one of those people who gave of himself without regret andlots of Love, but believe me he got a whole lot of that back from his Family and Friends.

You will forever be in our hearts my Friend and Mentor.

Sandra Brookshire - SVYC Member

Herb Bryant and his lovely wife of 67 yrs, Betty, have been loyal hard working members of South Venice Yacht Clubsince they joined in 1984.  Herb was Commodore twice, treasure for 20 years and the leader of one of the men'scooking teams back in the good old days when the men members were our chefs. Anytime a job needed done you couldcount on Herb being part of it. Betty served as the club secretary for many years.  She probably thought if she wantedto see Herb she needed to become involved herself. In the Fall, Venice holds the Sun Fiesta in downtown Venice.South Venice Yacht Club has a booth each year in hopes of attracting new members to the Club.  Herb always showedup to help other club members recruit new members.  Herb always had a smile and story for everyone he came in

contact with. Kind of a goodwill ambassador for the South Venice Yacht Club. This charming couple never missed aDinner/Dance in all the years they were members. That is true loyalty to the Club.  Even when they no longer dancedthey came to be with their friends and watch others having a good time dancing.

I would like all of Herbs friends and fellow members to pay a last tribute to Herb by helping to keep this Club alive.Bring your friends and neighbors to the Dinner/Dances. Join with other members to help, were help is needed. BeHappy, Friendly and Helpful to everyone you meet. Just like Herb always was. I am sure Herb will be watchingdown from the heavens over all of us and we will bask in the memory and sunshine of Herb.

The celebration of Life for Herb was just great.   The hall looked great, the food was great and there were manypeople that attended.   Bruce Brookshire facilitated the event. Two people from Trinity Presbyterian Church spoke,Herb's grandson, David Hein , spoke.   His daughter, Nancy Caparell and her son Adam spoke. Marie Cofrode, spokeand sang a song. Joe Granados spoke. I spoke. One other man spoke. He had been a neighborhood kid and hadknown Herb when he was growing up, then moved here and would golf with Herb. I never got his name. When noone else had anything to say the family went to the Commodore’s table and were served their dinners. Everyone elsewent through the serving line. It really worked out very nicely. The family shared many uplifting stories of how Herbhad always been in their lives and always had time to help them and make them feel special. It seems his memory willlive in their hearts forever.   They are truly a special family.

SVYC lost one of it's most dedicated members over the summer, Herb Bryant. While he is no longer physically withus, his spirt will live forever in our memories. No one was more dedicated to the club and to it's success. Herb willalways be the example that the rest of us will strive to follow. A kind word for everyone, an infectious smile andpositive outlook on life, a willingness to pitch in whenever and wherever he was needed, a person anyone would behonored to have as a friend.

I met Herb when I first joined the Club (over 12 years ago). He called me one day and asked if I would help him anda few others prepare the dinner for one of the upcoming dances (before catering). I told him I wasn't a cook but Icould cut a mean carrot. He wasn't impressed, but he took me under his wing and, in spite of my kitchen shortcomings, the dinner was a major success. Throughout the years I helped Herb with some club maintenance activities, played Thursday cards with him and the guys, and joined him for a drink or two at our numerous dances and socialevents. In Herb's case it was the quality on time spent with the man, not quantity of time, that defined him. I likedhim the first time we met and thoroughly enjoyed his friendship throughout the years.

Many of you knew Herb much better than myself. I wish I had spent more time with him, but the time I did spendwas special. He will be missed, but, just as important, he will be remembered fondly and with love by us all.
