7

“Our Yacht Support concept makes you totally self-sufficient without turning

your yacht into a cargo and equipment carrier. It’s a big difference and owners

have responded to that – it really works. We’ve already delivered four Yacht

Support vessels from our range and we’re building more. Owners take these

vessels all over the world with toys, tenders, specialist gear, personnel,

helicopters. Plus, we’ve taken great care in the range’s appearance and finish.

These vessels are built to belong on the superyacht scene.”

THE SECOND SEA AXE 6711 THAT HAS BEEN DELIVERED MAINTAINS SPEEDS OVER 20 KNOTS ON ITS WAY TO PREPARE THE NEXT DESTINATION (RANGE OF 4,500 NM AT 16 KNOTS).

You need speed. There is no point having a support ship if it lags behind. DAMEN's

patented SEA AXE hull form gives your Yacht Support vessel the power, stability and

efficiency to maintain long range speeds of 20 knots plus, even through a rough seaway.

Outperforming conventional vessels

‘Time is money’ – and nowhere more so than in the offshore industry. This is where

the bold, muscular SEA AXE vessels quickly proved highly successful, outperforming

conventional fast vessels and reducing helicopter costs. Work goes on no matter the

weather – safely and reliably. Repeat orders accelerated and DAMEN built more than

100 SEA AXE hulls in the first 5 years.

Fast when the stakes are high

Navies and Coast Guards also quickly caught on to the SEA AXE concept. Time and speed

can also mean saving lives, and DAMEN’s R&D team continue to push the boundaries.

In collaboration with the Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution (KNRM), DAMEN and

its partners developed the SAR 1906, a revolutionary new Search & Rescue boat based

on the Axe Bow concept. The first of the vessels won a recent ‘Ship of the Year Award’.

With the Yacht Support range, the proven speed, safety and reliability of DAMEN’s

innovative vessels are now available for the private use of superyacht owners.

SECURITY

When the risk of piracy and other threats increase, your high-speed Yacht Support vessel

is on patrol with specialised security personnel and equipment, scouting the area to

protect the mothership. After all, the Yacht Support range shares its DNA with DAMEN

Naval Shipbuilding’s Interceptors, fast patrol vessels and frigates, which are used by the

world’s Navies at the highest level of combat operations. Ask us for expert advice on

advanced sensor, weapon and communication systems.

Handling tenders and cargo with heavy duty

lifting gear and control systems, the captain and

crew perform their duties for the mothership with

confidence and efficiency. Your ancillary staff, pilots,

security personnel and regular crew utilise the Yacht

Support’s spacious and well-equipped work areas.

• High performance knuckle boom crane for lifting the largest tenders and toys

• Standard container twistlocks for quickly mobilising modular equipment

and boat cradles

Imagine what true freedom means for you and your crew, the new

possibilities it creates… Helicopter hangar, tenders, sailboats,

toys, vehicles, dive store, workshops, security equipment, fuels,

consumables, provisions, ancillary personnel, crew rotations,

modular containerised equipment.

The ultimate Yacht Support model, the 85-metre SEA AXE 8517

is a very large volume ship at 3,500 gross tonnes with a massive

550 square metre deck – not to mention the two-level toy garage,

tender slipway, helicopter hangar, accommodation for 33 crew and

personnel, and many more features.

26

We all know the formula: happy crew = happy yacht. When you don’t need personnel 24/7 on the mothership

– for example crew rotations, pilots, security, masseuse – accommodate them on your Yacht Support vessel.

You maximise privacy for you and your guests, while giving personnel some time away from the mothership.

They can get things done from a distance. After the work day, they can enjoy pleasant surroundings finished to high

standards, use the gym and recharge.

ELEVATED QUALITY

High quality finishing clearly

distinguishes the purpose-

built Yacht Support range

from lesser support boats and

commercial service vessels.

Leveraging specialist expertise

from AMELS, Yacht Support

vessels fit perfectly in the world

of superyachts. The hull and

superstructure are faired and

painted to high standard.

DAMEN’s modern shipbuilding

production process delivers

high quality, striking exterior

looks and decks finished

in Bolidt artificial teak. This is

an asset you can show off with

pride.

Page 32: Yacht Support Book

30

The Yacht Support’s breakthrough sea-

keeping performance stems from cooperative

technical efforts and the market experience

of renowned Dutch organisations: DAMEN

Shipyards Group, Delft University of Tech-

nology and the research institute MARIN.

DAMEN provided the initial thrust in Holland

more than 20 years ago, seeing the need to

develop a fast offshore commercial vessel

that could withstand heavy weather, as

routine storms are no excuse for halting

offshore work.

INNOVATION

Let there be no doubt. Your Yacht Support vessel is not

a conversion of an obsolete supply boat. It’s a purpose-

built powerhouse with remarkable high-speed seakeeping

performance made possible by the exclusive SEA AXE hull form.

OVER 100 HULLS BUILT IN 5 YEARS

SEA AXE - HULL FORM SLICES THROUGH WAVES LIKE AN AXE

CONVENTIONAL SHIP - SLAMMING FORCES REDUCE SPEED

Page 33: Yacht Support Book

31

Fast and fuel efficient

Delft University of Technology hydrodynamic

theoreticians developed the early phase, using

a towing tank to prove that lengthening a hull,

without changing its beam or basic shape,

resulted in a faster, easier-to-operate and more

fuel-efficient vessel. This was the first major step

toward the revolutionary SEA AXE concept.

Next Dr Lex Keuning was exploring a new

concept in ship design. He thought, “If you

can sharpen the bow, increase the sheer and

lower the centreline of the bow, this should

dramatically reduce the wave-exciting forces

when a ship is sailing in a seaway.” And so, in

conjunction with Delft University of Technology,

MARIN and DAMEN, Dr Keuning pioneered and

patented the ‘Axe Bow’ – so called because the

forefoot is deeper than the keel, resembling an

axe (see comparison opposite).

Reducing peak accelerations

The Axe Bow shape (see graphs, left) has

proven to generate as much as 15 percent less

resistance in smooth water than a conventional

hull, even at up to 35 knots of speed. And it

produces a remarkable 75 percent reduction in

peak accelerations and slamming in a seaway,

which means far greater sea kindliness and

minimal discomfort and inconvenience for crews

in heavy seas.

Page 34: Yacht Support Book

32

Travel fast, travel in style. In transit to the mothership,

you and your guests can join the Captain in the elegant

wheelhouse. On the largest Yacht Support vessel, relax

in the VIP lounge with up to 90 square metres of luxury

space. And, at your request, our expert craftsmen can

tailor any interior spaces to the same luxurious Owner’s

standard as the mothership.

engineering. DAMEN listens carefully to its customers and invests a

great deal in innovation, research and development. That’s why they can

simply build better boats.

Joining the group in 1991, AMELS is the only luxury yacht builder in the

DAMEN Shipyards Group. The synergy between AMELS and DAMEN

includes not just sharing expertise in research, development and

naval architecture, but in the very philosophy that underpins DAMEN’s

approach. AMELS’ revolutionary Limited Editions concept stems from

this philosophy and has proven extraordinarily successful.

SUCCESSFUL ENTRANCE

6911SEA AXE 6911 - Under construction, delivery 2016

The Yacht Support team of talented naval architects continues to innovate and develop new solutions. A great example of this is SEA AXE 6911’s ultimate technical area for serious superyacht helicopter operations – a LY3 / MCA fully certified helideck with fully enclosed hangar. Particularly for destinations with less developed infrastructure, this innovative solution opens up new possibilities for luxury yachting experiences and has justifiably generated great interest.

Recently introduced, the innovative Yacht Support concept immediately

captured the attention of superyacht owners. Four Yacht Support vessels

are currently proving their merit during luxury voyages around the world.

More are under construction, developed for owners with a vision of

yachting at the highest level.

Page 45: Yacht Support Book

43

6711SEA AXE 6711 - Launched 2014

Named simply ‘6711’ after the SEA AXE 6711 model, this is a great example of the level of customisation possible with a Yacht Support vessel. With accommodation for 21 crew and staff, this 67-metre SEA AXE has been configured with a 70 square metre dive centre, which even includes a decompression chamber.

GARÇONSEA AXE 6711 - Launched 2012

GARÇON is a highly customised 67-metre SEA AXE 6711. It carries a huge array of extra equipment as well as having great workshops and extensive storage. For the regular mothership crew, the Yacht Support vessel is a place to go and relax when they are on breaks. There is a large lounge, a gym, sunbathing areas and swim platform.

PURSUIT (EX OBERON)SEA AXE 5009 - Launched 2010 The first Yacht Support vessel delivered, OBERON is a 50-metre SEA AXE 5009 purpose-built to provide round-the-clock service and support for a superyacht. With a top speed of 28 knots, OBERON spent its first season in active service around the Mediterranean and has since travelled the globe.

UMBRASEA AXE 5009 - Launched 2010 As well as all the advantages of its sister vessel, the second SEA AXE 5009 also features an enclosed container-like space aft of the accommodation. This customisation provides a workshop with a full complement of machinery for maintenance and repairs.

Page 46: Yacht Support Book

44

RANGERanging in length from 40 to 85 metres, all Yacht Support vessels are

based on proven DAMEN platforms, developed to operate safely and

reliably in the most challenging environments. The range starts with the

sleek and nimble 40-metre vessel, moving up to the 85-metre large

Yacht Support vessels where carrying capacity is immense.

Although the SEA AXE 4008 is the smallest in the Yacht Support range, it packs a punch. The vessel is only

40 metres in length, but can carry a variety of different tenders and toys with its 140 square metres of deck

space. The vessel accommodates 10 crew and staff. It has the option of a touch & go helipad capable of

supporting a maximum take-off weight of 3,000 kg.*

The SEA AXE 5509 adds a fully certified LY3 / MCA helideck with a maximum take-off weight of 5,000 kg.*

The helicopter can be protected from the elements with a cover and ionizing air blowers. Below the helideck

at the aft of the vessel, there’s extra capacity for personnel and stores. The 20-metre deck still provides plenty

of space – 160 square metres – for tenders and toys.

The SEA AXE 8517 is the ultimate Yacht Support solution. At 3,500 gross tonnes, it’s three times larger than the

next model in the range. With a massive 550 square metre deck, it can carry the whole spectrum of tenders,

powerboats, submersibles, plus there’s a two level garage for toys, sports cars, quads, motorcycles etc. A

helicopter hangar* and a dive centre, plus a 90 square metre VIP lounge and bar: this is the ultimate form of luxury.
