Dear Friends and Colleagues,

welcome to the X National Conference on Materials Science and Technology, welcome to Favignana. This edition of the biannual conference of the National Interuniversity Consortium of Material Science and Technology (INSTM) is organized at the ancient Tonnara in Favignana, between June 28th and July 1st, 2015. Ex Stabilimento Florio delle tonnare di Favignana e Formica (Tonnara di Favignana) is a fine example of industrial archeology. Until the beginning of the nineties it was a tuna fishery and a factory for the conservation of the tuna, designed by the archi-tect Giuseppe Damiani Almeyda in 1874 called by Ignazio Florio.

I was committed to organize this event about one year ago, so I really hope that you will appreciate everything, starting from the scientific quality of talks and posters, to the warmth and the enthusiasm of the local organizers.

Furthermore the INSTM Conference will deal with several issues related to Materials Science and Technology; not limiting the fields to the thematic sections in which the Consortium has recently reorganized its scientific structure, namely:

Advanced mechanics, construction and transport

Energy and environment

Systems for processing, transmission and storage of information

Health and food but also on:

Conservation of cultural heritage

Scientific and technological computation

The scientific contributions are divided into oral contributions, short oral contributions and posters. However, with the aim to promote cross-fertilization among young and senior researchers, and to ignite interdisciplinarity among INSTM associates different areas of interest, other regular and short talks will be delivered on various themes, as well as many poster contribu-tions. According to the INSTM tradition, several grants have been given to young researchers to facilitate their participation to the Conference and help to increase their visibility.

Overall, the INSTM Conference will offer lectures from Universities, Research Centers and Industries, plus 46 regular and 32 short talks, and about 60 poster contributions. This dense and stimulating program is condensed in this Book of Abstract, that will be available in the electronic form to all the participants and sponsors. So, at three weeks from the beginning of the Con-ference, it is my enjoyable duty to write my warm acknowledgements to several people who has contributed to assemble this program and to organize this Congress, with the hope that you all will benefit from it.

My acknowledgements, thus, go: to the INSTM Scientific Committee members, for suggesting and accepting me as Local Organizer; to all INSTM staff members in Firenze, Silvia Chiani and Gianna Coppini in particular, for their kindness and efficien-cy, and for the hard work done; to my co-chair fellows Andrea Caneschi and Teodoro Valente, INSTM Director and President, respectively, for their availability and competence, and for the trust and the good mood; and to all the members of the Local Organizing Committee, for their patience with me, and for solving many problems, with particular thanks to Manuela Ceraulo, Maria Chiara Mistretta and Luigi Botta, among all of them.

Particular acknowledgement are duly due to the Sponsors of this event, that have generously contributed for their constant attention to Research and Innovation.

I really hope that you enjoy this conference at least as much as I enjoyed to organize it. Yours Palermo, June 7th, 2015
