Growing up, these women dreamed of having a family, a career. None of them dreamed of being an addict. You’ll hear how trust of family members was lost over time as the addiction took hold. MONDAY, APRIL 9 - SATURDAY, APRIL 14

Needle exchanges, synthetic opioids with devastating power, people cycling through rehab, families in crisis…all of these speak to the powerful, direct impact the opioid epidemic continues to have on our nation. Addiction does not just affect addicts. Addiction to opioids and heroin is indirectly influencing economies, educational systems, justice systems, and neighborhoods.

This April 9-14, as part of a CPB-funded public media collaborative, WXXI News with partners Oregon Public Broadcasting and ideastream present a special reporting series on the opioids crisis. The series, which will include reports from three telling locales across the country, will look at the people and issues indirectly affected by the opioid crisis and make the case that the epidemic’s ripple effects impact many. Listen to these reports on AM 1370 and WRUR-FM 88.5 and online at WXXINews.org. Content will also be posted and shared on social media, and you can follow the conversation using the hashtag #opioids.

Additional programming throughout the week includes:

DEAR FRIENDS,In 1958 a far-sighted group of men and women formed the Rochester Area Educational Television Association (RAETA), eventually securing a license for Channel 21, WXXI. Some 60 years later we’re proud that education remains the hallmark of WXXI. It’s more than trusted PBS Kids programming; it’s the educational outreach we provide our community. With community partners, we provide collaborative support for families and children through local schools, libraries, after-school organizations, and community centers.

WXXI’s Ready to Learn workshop series for Rochester City School District educators and parents support hundreds each year in using media and “make and take” activities for home and classroom. Our series of “Exploration Stations” events with the Rochester Public Library provides hands-on informal and take-home activities for families. Last month, we collaborated with Kendall Elementary School on a Wild Kratt’s family event to cap a week of classroom activities focused on animals and the environment. And, our recent collaboration with the Rochester Toy Library to create a series of WXXI Kids Play Kits works to promote exploration and encourage child-directed play. Providing a model of how to use PBS KIDS learning resources in the classroom, these kits – filled with fun, hands-on science-related play tools – are currently being piloted at two Kindergarten sites, RCSD Roberto Clemente School #8 and Genesee Community Charter School. At-home backpack versions of these kits are also available for “check out” from Rochester’s Toy Library.

We’re also proud to share the news that our work has been recognized nationally with support from a Ready to Learn planning grant. This will allow us to set up a community learning collaborative in a high-need neighborhood to maximize the impact of PBS KIDS content and personalized learning experiences in science and literacy for children and their families.

Recently, I attended the Public Media Summit in Washington with WXXI Board Chair Dr. Cynthia Reddeck-LiDestri and Sr. Vice President of TV & News, Elissa Orlando. We joined colleagues from PBS stations across the country to talk about the important work public media does in our communities. We reminded Congress that PBS is rated #1 in public trust among nationally known institutions, and is called an “excellent” use of tax dollars by the American public (for the 13th year in a row). Please consider sharing why public media is important to you. Just visit Protect My Public Media’s website at: ProtectMyPublicMedia.org and submit your own testimonial, which may be used as a resource when meeting with policy makers in the coming months.

Your support – through advocacy and membership – enables us to educate, inspire, and engage our community through in-depth news reporting, meaningful educational services, and quality programming. Thank you!

Best regards,

Norm [email protected] | @normWXXI

Q&A WITH A WXXI UNDERWRITER

To learn more about underwriting on WXXI, email [email protected]

The Artful Gardener offers an ever-changing variety of uncommon items including sculpture, garden accents, frost-proof pottery, and fine craft from artisans throughout the country. Owner, Jean Westcott, opened the shop as an off-shoot of her 30-year career as a professional garden designer. With a degree in landscape architecture, Jean is an avid gardener and places great value on the artistic and architectural elements that define a garden’s aesthetic. Jean shares more about her shop and provides tips to help build healthy gardens.

Q. How do you connect with local artists? My network has grown over time as I’ve met local artists at various craft shows and through word of mouth. Rochester as a community really values the arts; promoting its artists both

enriches the fabric of our experience and supports our local economy.

Q. What’s your greatest achievement in gardening? The legacy of having had a hand in the planting of hundreds of trees throughout my career.

Q. Most unique item in the shop? That would be a tie between the 8’ dragonfly and the 5’ copper frog, both sculpted by James Seaman!

Q. Do you favor the use of native plants in planned landscapes?I’ve learned that there are no hard and fast rules to plant selection. Site conditions determine what species will thrive; creating a wish list of plants without understanding the environment is bound to lead to disappointment.

Q. How can urban gardeners create habitat for birds, butterflies, etc. within small spaces? An environment that allows bees to thrive will allow butterflies, birds and humans to thrive as well! Growing high-quality nectar sources in an area as small as 150sf is all the space needed to help support our native bee populations who, in some cases, can fly only about three blocks before needing to feed.

Q. What’s the best piece of gardening advice you’ve ever received?Plants need a good, nutritious, humus-rich soil to thrive so don’t skip on soil amendments! Take the time to add a good quality and quantity of compost (mushroom soil, composted leaves, etc.) to your soil and you’ll be rewarded with robust healthy plants!

Inspired by Civilisation, Kenneth Clark’s acclaimed landmark 1969 series about Western art, this bold new series from Nutopia broadens the canvas to reveal the role art and the creative imagination have played across multiple cultures and civilizations, introducing a new generation to works of beauty, ingenuity and illumination created across continents. From the landscape scrolls of classical China and the sculpture of the Olmecs to African bronzes, Japanese prints and French Impressionist paintings, the series explores the wealth of treasures created through the entirety of the human experience.

DR. SHEIKH MUSZAPHAR SHUKOR BECAME THE FIRST DEVOUT MUSLIM TO GO INTO SPACE DURING THE HOLY MONTH OF RAMADAN.

AMERICA ABROAD:

ISLAM AND THE COSMOS SUNDAY, APRIL 1 AT 9PM ON AM 1370

American Abroad looks back at the “Golden Age of Islam” – how it started, how it ended, and why the European Renaissance might not have happened without it. They explore how some Muslim countries are now trying to become world leaders in astronomy and space science again. But there are challenges. Can Jordan entice enough scientists from a politically unstable Middle East to come and use its particle accelerator? Will Turkey’s desire to be a world leader in astronomy be thwarted by the government’s censorship of modern scientific theory? And a look at the United Arab Emirates’ plans to build and sustain its own space program.

ACOUSTIC CAFÉ SUNDAYS 5AM-7AM AND 6PM-8PM ON WRUR-FMIt’s hard to put a definitive label on Acoustic Café’s music selections. After all, a good song is a good song… any individual set of music could contain a bit of country, rock, blues, folk, pop… and more! Host Rob Reinhart takes you around the globe to hear the latest from today’s great songwriting talents. In addition to classic songwriters like Dylan, Mitchell, Young, Cash, Browne, Prine, Acoustic Café brings as many newer talents to the table as possible.

“ Good radio is now one of the only media that isn’t designed to simply reflect the taste of the user. It’s still a community that brings together lots of different people. Neat, huh?”

– Rob Reinhart, host

THE METROPOLITAN OPERA4/7 AT 1:00PM Donizetti: Lucia di LammermoorThe role of the fragile title heroine who teeters between love and madness is shared by sopranos Olga Peretyatko-Mariotti and Pretty Yende, who have each impressed audiences with dazzling bel canto portrayals at the Met. Vittorio Grigolo and Michael Fabiano share the role of her lover in this chilling production by Tony Award-winning director Mary Zimmerman. Roberto Abbado conducts.

4/14 AT 1:00PM Verdi: Luisa MillerPlácido Domingo adds yet another role to his legendary Met career in this rarely performed Verdi gem, a heart-wrenching tragedy of fatherly love. Sonya Yoncheva sings the title role opposite Piotr Beczała in the first Met performances of the opera in more than ten years. Bertrand de Billy conducts.

4/21 AT 1:00PMAdès: The Exterminating AngelFollowing the rapturous response to his last opera, The Tempest, the Met presents the American premiere of Thomas Adès’s The Exterminating Angel, inspired by the classic Luis Buñuel film of the same name. Hailed by the New York Times at its 2016 Salzburg Festival premiere as “inventive and audacious … a major event,” The Exterminating Angel is a surreal fantasy about a dinner party from which the guests can’t escape. Tom Cairns, who wrote the libretto, directs the new production, and Adès conducts his own adventurous new opera.

4/28 AT 1:00PMMassenet: Cendrillon “Glorious,” raved the New York Times when Joyce DiDonato sang the title role of Cendrillon at the Royal Opera in 2011. “Her performance was thoroughly enchanting.” Now, for the first time ever, Massenet’s sumptuous take on the Cinderella story comes to the Met, with DiDonato starring in the title role. She is paired with mezzo-soprano Alice Coote in the trouser role of Prince Charming, Kathleen Kim as the Fairy Godmother, and Stephanie Blythe as the imperious Madame de la Haltière. Bertrand de Billy conducts Laurent Pelly’s imaginative storybook production.

TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME: A CELEBRATION OF MUSIC AND BASEBALLMONDAY, APRIL 2 AT 12PM ON CLASSICAL 91.5 Every spring, WFMT Chicago host Carl Grapentine curates and presents music in his morning program that celebrates opening day of the baseball season. He and producer Michael San Gabino condensed these musical selections into an hour-long program that honors the great American pastime. In addition to some interpretations of the popular tune “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” Carl features an array of music that is inspired by the beloved sport, including selections from the films Field of Dreams and The Natural.

BACKSTAGE PASS WITH FLUTIST ADAM SADBERRYTUESDAY, APRIL 24 AT 1 PM ON CLASSICAL 91.5Flutist Adam Sadberry joins host Julia Figueras to talk about his recently awarded fellowship with the Detroit Symphony to perform with the orchestra for the next two years. And, he’ll play a program of music that will include works by William Grant Still and George Enesco. Sadberry is a senior from the studio at the Eastman School of Music and serves on WXXI’s Community Advisory Board member.
