PROGRAMLISTINGSROYORBISONBLACK & WHITE NIGHT 30
It’s hard to believe 30 years have passed since Roy Orbison’s televised comeback Black & White Night concert was filmed. Recorded live in September 1987 at the Cocoanut Grove in Los Angeles, the concert featured the great Roy Orbison and an all-star line-up of special guests, including Jackson Browne, T Bone Burnett, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, and Tom Waits, for a never-to-be-repeated evening of rock and roll, filmed entirely in black and white. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the legendary event, this newly edited and remastered version gives the iconic concert a fresh look and sound, bringing new life and excitement to the performances.

DEAR FRIENDS,WXXI’s news service seems to be resonating throughout our community. If you were one of the many individuals who pledged their support during our February Radio Membership Drive, thank you! We heard from many listeners during the week about how they value the fair, balanced and trustworthy reporting they get from WXXI and NPR – now more than ever. For example:“ I have been a long time NPR Listener and wanted to support the excellent programming. It is more important than ever to stay informed about the news. I feel that NPR/WXXI gives a clear and unbiased view of the world.” —Holly from Rochester
“ I’ve never appreciated honest and reliable news sources more than I do right now. Thank you!” —Katie from Webster
“ I’m committed to supporting public access to actual, fact-based news.” —Edward from Pittsford
We are proud to be the place you can turn, to get all sides of the story and in-depth analysis that helps you make up your mind on important issues. WXXI, NPR and the PBS NewsHour strive to provide the news and information that makes us an indispensible part of your life. We’re also proud to share that WXXI News’ health reporter and producer Karen Shakerdge has been selected to be part of a national reporting partnership hosted by NPR and Kaiser News. The “Health Care in the States” project is designed to bring together public radio’s best health journalists with the goal of strengthening health coverage on a local level, and share these stories on a national level via NPR. “Health Care in the States” will look at a broad range of health care policy topics – the Affordable Care Act (ACA), hospitals, nursing homes, Medicaid, Medicare, the VA, private health insurance, and issues surrounding health care finance and state budgets. You’ll hear Karen’s stories during Morning Edition and All Things Considered, as well as anytime on WXXINews.org.At the end of January we hosted our annual Staff Appreciation Luncheon. 13 WHAM-TV’s Don Alhart joined us as our keynote speaker that afternoon, and shared memories of the past 50 years working in the news industry. During the program we also honored one of our staff members with the Geraldine Reddig Employee of the Year award. Congratulations to production technician Jason Milton for receiving the honor. You can read more about Jason and his award on the “News & Events” page that follows. Finally, if you haven’t yet heard, we are excited to build on the work we do every day for Rochester’s families by adding a new 24-hour kids channel to our offerings. WXXI KIDS 24/7 reinforces our pledge to provide educational programming that sparks imaginations and fosters a life-long love of learning. Available on channel 21.4, on cable 1277 and also as a live stream on the PBS Kids Video App, WXXI KIDS 24/7 lets children and their caregivers watch their favorite programs at times most convenient for them. WXXI’s trusted kids programming and award-winning news programming are only made possible with your membership support. With that support we have been able to expand both services – and rest assured, our commitment to both will only continue to grow!

Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964, the Seward House Museum in Auburn, N.Y., displays one of the most original collections of any historic home in America. Allison Hinman, Director of Development at the Museum, provides an overview of the distinctive importance of the Seward family home.
Q. What makes the Seward House Museum unique?William Henry Seward, one of the foremost politicians of nineteenth century America, was a New
York State Senator, Governor of New York, a United States Senator, and also served as Secretary of State during the Lincoln and Johnson administrations. He is credited with spearheading the purchase of the Alaskan Territory from Russia in 1867. The elegant interior of the Seward House has
been restored to its original beauty and features an unmatched collection of political and travel souvenirs, decorative arts, and photographs that spans William Seward’s nearly forty-year political career.
Q. Are there any particularly noteworthy pieces in the collections? The personal library of William H. Seward’s daughter, Fanny, is considered to be one of the only intact libraries of a 19th century teenager left in existence. Other collections include extensive Native Alaskan artifacts purchased by William H. Seward after he brokered the purchase of Russian America in 1867. The Museum also displays many fine art works including the iconic Signing of the Alaska Treaty by artist Emanuel Leutze.
Q. How is the digital world helping to preserve and expand the Seward Legacy? We are embracing the fact that present day and future museum visitors may not be crossing our physical threshold. Our new website, launched in 2016, addresses our online visitors, who now have access to virtual tours and more information about the museum’s many collections.
Q. You open for the season in March. What exciting events do you have planned this year?We will be kicking off our yearlong celebration of the sesquicentennial of the Alaska purchase with the opening of our new exhibit. This exhibit will showcase the extensive Native Alaskan artifacts purchased by Seward when he visited Alaska in 1869. On May 13th, in partnership with the State of Alaska, there will be an unveiling of a statue of Seward in the Museum gardens that will be open to the public.

WXXI and the Little Theatre held its annual Staff Appreciation Luncheon in January. As part of the program, WXXI Board of Trustees Chair James Fulmer presented the Geraldine B. Reddig Employee of the Year to Jason Milton, production technician and director of Homework Hotline. The Geraldine B. Reddig Employee of the Year Award is presented annually to a staff member who has made significant contributions to the organization. He or she must be a full-time employee and show skill and ability in his or her position, display a willingness to exceed in his or her job requirements, possess a positive attitude and work well with others.Jason has been part of the WXXI family since 2007. While attending SUNY Brockport he interned in the TV production department at WXXI where he served as part of the Homework Hotline crew, WXXI’s statewide TV show where kids get help with their homework right over the air. After graduating from Brockport with a B.A. in Communications, Jason was hired by WXXI as a production assistant. In addition to directing Homework Hotline, Jason works on various television productions including Second Opinion and the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Fest series. Employees at the station nominate the Employee of the Year and a select group votes on a winner. One of Jason’s peers describes him as a “quiet force”. Another writes: “Jason always puts the staff at ease and makes us want to produce the best product.” Congratulations to this year’s winner —production technician extraordinaire, Homework Hotline director, amazing musician, and all around great guy – Jason Milton.

TUESDAY, MARCH 7 AT 8PM ON WXXI-TV Born Virginia Patterson Hensley in Winchester, Virginia, Patsy Cline (September 8, 1932 – March 5, 1963) defined modern country music by using her singular talent and heart‐wrenching emotional depth to break down barriers of gender, class and genre. In her music and her life, she set a standard of authenticity towards which artists still strive. After years of hard work to overcome industry gender biases and her own personal hardships and professional missteps, she achieved success, only to have it punctured by uncanny premonitions and her untimely death at age 30. Narrated by Rosanne Cash, the film examines the roots of Cline’s impact in both personal and cultural terms to illuminate how she arrived at a pivotal moment in the evolution of American culture and, with Decca Records producer Owen Bradley, synthesized country, pop and rock in a new way to create the Nashville Sound.
