Trophy-Winning Rival to Châteauneuf

Taste the red that beat dozens of Châteauneuf-du-Papes at the Rhône’s top show, Le Concours des Vins d’Orange 2012. We’re talking one of only 39 wines (from 2,900 entries) to win a trophy. That’s a pretty big deal.

Here’s an even bigger one: Domaine du Mistral has sent us a limited number of HALF-PRICE three-packs to get you to judge their glorious 2011 yourself. The village of Plan de Dieu lies just north of Châteauneuf. Same grapes here (Grenache, Syrah, etc), same heat-trapping galet stones, same heady mix of black fruit and wild herb flavors too. Much nicer price (especially today).

And don’t forget, if you’re ordering a 12-bottle case of any other wine, your Mistral ships at no extra charge.

Opi Sadler’s Waxed Bat Reserve has 12 months in French oak and overflows with ripe blackberry, plum and smoky vanilla flavor. No wonder it took gold at the world’s largest wine show – and is winning raves on wsjwine.com:

Huge Hits from Italy and Portugal

Loved by customers and wine show judges, three-time Vinitaly

Winemaker of the Year Angelo Maci’s chocolaty, plum-laden

Primitivo has scooped over 60 awards in seven vintages,

including six gold medals. One taste of his latest release shows

why. Try serving to friends who normally stick to Napa Cab or

Aussie Shiraz — they’ll thank you for it.

★ ★ ★ ★ “Pleasant surprise … full body, nice finish.”

This newcomer to the ranks of ‘favorite big reds’ is a rare

100% Alicante Bouschet — a dark, brooding beast of a grape,

tamed here by superstar José Neiva. As top critic Tim Atkin

points out, “the Portuguese wine revolution couldn’t have

happened without him.” Expect layers of sweet blackberry,

mocha, cinnamon and more in this Berlin silver medalist.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ “Primitivo Perfection!! … hands down the best.”

“ Simply put, 2012 will be one of the best vintages California has seen for decades.”

— jancisrobinson.com

California Gold Rush

The critics are raving about California 2012 and wine merchants across the U.S. are rushing to snap up

the best wines. It all comes down to who you know and the Prospector is an exclusive new release from

Reed Renaudin, one of the hottest talents around.

“Shrewd consumers should be buying them by the case load.”

That’s top critic Robert Parker on Reed’s “exceptional bargains.”

The Prospector blends Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Malbec and Syrah

(none of them shy on flavor) and delivers mouthfuls of ripe black cherry

fruit, with lovely spicy oak notes. Smooth on its own and great with

rich meat dishes.

Take Parker’s advice and buy this “by the case load” — at a special

price while our first shipment lasts.

Right Bank Beauty Wins Paris Gold Eric Gonfrier made the most of this “remarkable” and “compelling” vintage (Parker), winning gold in Paris for his smooth, oak-aged Merlot/Cab. Packed with plum and classic cigar box warmth. Château Haut Terrasson 2010

Old-Vine, Double-Gold Champ The Brulatouts have crafted top-notch wines since 1961. Their rich, Merlot-dominant 2010 is made from sustainably farmed, old-vine fruit — and wowed judges at top shows in Bordeaux and Paris. Château Florie Aude 2010

Full-Flavored, Double-Gold Gem The Cigana family is known for making reds that deliver big on flavor. No wonder judges in LA and Lyon thought their Merlot-laden red outclassed many far pricier bottles from this storied region. Château Les Marcottes 2010

Barrel-Aged, Gold-Medal Classic 2010 set new records for richness and color, and this sumptuous red won a coveted gold in Lyon. Made by a local star who brings Margaux magic to this small estate, it’s full of berry and toasty cedar. Château Moulin de Pillardot 2010

‘Superior’ Gold-Medal Standout This tiny château is run by a dedicated husband-and-wife team. Their Concours de Bordeaux gold medalist showcases the intense aromas and complex flavors of 2010. Sure to impress guests. Château Loyasson Bordeaux Supérieur 2010

Awarded Gold By a Top French Guide Your second Bordeaux Supérieur (a mark of real quality) is a Merlot/Cab with soft tannins thanks to a year in French and U.S. oak. It won a coveted gold from leading French guide Gilbert & Gaillard. Château La Tonnelle Bordeaux Supérieur 2010

Founded in 1821, Château La Gorce is a grand estate in Bordeaux’s Médoc, “the most famous red wine district in Bordeaux, and possibly the world.” (Jancis Robinson) Their luscious 2008 Cru Bourgeois majors on Cabernet Sauvignon, and is rounded out with Merlot and a splash of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

Barrel aged for a full 18 months, and bottled unfiltered (for further complexity), it was released to gold-medal acclaim at Le Concours de Bordeaux. Bordeaux’s 2008s are drinking beautifully right now and offer fantastic value — especially a fine Cru Bourgeois such as La Gorce (as the above quote attests).

Bordeaux values like this are increasingly hard to come by — so don’t delay.

The Reds Everyone’s Talking About“OneofthebestI’vetasted.”★★★★“Cariñena is home to some of the best-value reds in

Blockbuster 98-Point Château Lynch-Bages“A wine with great beauty and finesse Such elegance and ethereal quality … The best Lynch in a long, long time.” — 98 Points, James Suckling

Situated on a prime-sited plateau west of Pauillac in the village of Bages, Château Lynch-Bages is one of the Médoc’s most famous estates. Its glorious 2010 scored over 95 Points in nearly every major wine publication. Today, you enjoy access to this rare, collectible Bordeaux Cru Classé at one of the lowest prices in the country.

“An absolutely brilliant wine. 96 Points.” — Parker

Given that you can spend well over $1,000 for a top taste of Bordeaux’s landmark 2010 vintage, this Left Bank gem represents phenomenal value. As Parker notes, this is “a massive Lynch Bages, full-bodied and very 1989-ish, with notable power, loads of tannin, and extraordinary concentration and precision … one to hold on to for 5-6 years and drink over the following three decades.”

If 2010 is a special year for you, this cult Bordeaux makes a very special gift to enjoy over the coming years.

Alongside Opi Sadler’s wildly popular signature release and gold-medal favorites Ascención and Alma Andina Reserva, you’re invited to enjoy Hervé Fabre’s NEW 90-point Gran Reserva and Pascual Toso’s 93-point super-exclusive Finca Pedregal (a wine that usually sells for $49.99).
