Chapter 3 : Regional Analysis

Annual OFS expenditure in Australasia

will average $ bn throughout the

forecast. Extensive drilling programs

were undertaken in recent years to

provide feedstocks for Australia’s

large CBM-to-LNG projects – seeing

expenditure spike to $ bn in 2013.

With the majority of drilling now com-

pleted, activity has dropped to much

lower levels.

As a result of the aforementioned

CBM projects, the majority of OFS

expenditure in Australasia occurs

onshore, accounting for % over

2011-2015 and % over 2016-2020.

Such developments will lead to coiled

tubing services and perforation

experiencing strong growth through

to 2020. Coiled tubing methods are

widely used for the drilling, interven-

tion and completion of shallow gas

wells, while multiple perforation runs

are necessary for maximising flow

from horizontal wells drilled into the

coal seams.

Future offshore OFS expenditure will

be driven by large scale projects off

the west coast of Australia, including

Shell’s Prelude FLNG project. DW

expects offshore OFS spend to peak

in 2018 at $ m as a consequence

of a drop in project sanctioning in the

near-term as a result of the market

downturn.

D&PSlickline Services

Chapter 4 : Service Line Analysis

Slickline services costs consist of the

rental of slickline units and operating

crew. Slickline is a thin non-electric

wireline used to set and retrieve

wellbore equipment and can addition-

ally be used to open and close valves.

Despite being an older oilfield technol-

ogy, slickline remains a commonly used

well intervention tool as it is cost-

effective, reliable and uncomplicated.

The slickline market is closely associ-

ated with the completions phase of

drilling, driven by global drilling activity.

However, slickline also sees wide use

in the brownfield phase of develop-

ment, including workover, fishing and

plug removal and setting.

Slickline services spend dropped %

for onshore markets and % for

offshore in 2015 – this is expected to

continue into 2016, though at only %

and %. Decline has been largely due

to day rate reduction while drilling

activity decline has been somewhat

offset by brownfield requirements of

slickline services. Moreover, where

interchangeable, slickline has been

a preferred conveyance method to

wireline in the current cost-cutting

environment, further limiting 2015

decline.

D&PWireline Logging – Top 30 Markets

Chapter 4 : Service Line Analysis

Table 49: Wireline Logging – Top 30 Markets 2011-2020

“The costs can vary a lot. It depends on the contract, for example SLB is the only service provider in Oman and logging price is very cheap comparing to other countries.”

Oilfield Service Provider

“Wireline still has its advantages over LWD. Measurements can be carried out without drilling vibration, drill string interference, drill string rotation and often at lower temperatures which can negatively impact the data and also cause tool failures in LWD tools.”

Oilfield Service Provider

“Wireline logging is the most common service in order to give us geological and petrophysical data about the formation.”

Oilfield Service Provider

“It is significantly more cost-effective to wireline log as opposed to logging while drilling but then you have the pay-off of not knowing immediately what the subsurface situation is.”

Oilfield Service Provider

“For exploration wells you need all types of services and it costs more but in development wells you don’t need all the same ser-vices.”

Oilfield Service Provider

“Using MWD/LWD saves rig time and I know for a fact that this is what they use in the Caspian but wireline OH logging gives you significantly more information about the well.”

Douglas-Westwood’s (DW) NEW quarterly publication The World Oilfield Services Market Forecast provides unique insight into the global oilfield services (OFS) market. The product delivers historic, current and future expenditure forecasting of 20 common OFS service lines including rig & crew, cementing, well testing, logging.

With a forecast through to 2020 and utilising a proprietary methodology, DW’s World Oilfield Services Market Forecast provides granular analysis of a market which is expected to stead-ily increase from $192 billion (bn) in 2016 to $241bn in 2020, after falling 38% year-on-year from 2014 to 2015. The forecast includes a regional assessment of total OFS spending, with additional in-depth analysis of each service line at a national level. DW’s detailed service line models include workover, as well as drilling and completion for the onshore & offshore markets, providing unparalleled insight into the OFS sector.

Taking into account the latest macro-economic trends through explicit commodity price inputs to all service line models, DW’s OFS forecast provides up-to-date analysis of one of the most

important and fast moving markets in the oil & gas sector.

DW’s World Drilling & Production Forecast (DWD&P) generates the wells drilled forecast which drives DW’s OFS forecast. D&P is con-tinuously updated, providing detailed hydro-carbon production and drilling data that covers 96% of global production. This established foundation provides a base for the further modelling of footage and drilling days — key drivers of OFS spending.

The World Oilfield Services Market Forecast contains:

• Oilfield services expenditure data – gener-ated in-house using models exclusive to DW; the OFS market forecast utilises DW’s own D&P models for wells drilled, footage and drilling days.

• Full global coverage – the only product to provide country-by-country analysis of the global OFS market.
