The job responsibilities were technical management of hardware research and
development activities of three major computer based projects. (a) Automatic Data Handing System (ADHS) for Project ADGES.
This project was sponsored by the Department of Electronics, Government of India for the use of Indian Air Force (IAF). The ADHS receives its main inputs from 3D Radar. The ADHS consists of dual processors operating in a load sharing mode with a front-end tracker. The system is engineered for operating in a fail soft mode with reduced capabilities. The ADHS uses TDC-316 computers (three) with a host of peripheral devices such as magnetic tape drives, discs, and a display processor controlling eight display consoles.
(b) Bit-Slice Minicomputer :-
This project was a major subunit of the Automatic Electronic Switch (AES) of plan, AREN, developed for the Indian Army. It consisted of the designed and development of a rugged minicomputer with memory and a few peripheral controllers. The minicomputer was totally compatible with PDP-11 series of computers. The design was based on the bit-slice microprocessor Am-2901 with a microprograms control unit. The processor had enhanced diagnostic features and was quite compact in size.
(c) 3D Scanning Attachment for Weather Radar :-
This system performed the on line acquisition and processing of the data received from a weather radar. The system was designed and developed for the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). The processed data was stored on magnetic tapes for future reference. A rainfall map was generated and displayed on a specially designed CRT terminal and also printed on a DECWRITER.
4) The other projects in which participated in a limited manner are :- a) Design Automation of Digital Systems. b) Design and development of a file-server for the Local Area Network (LAN). 5) The other aspects of technical management involved :- a) Interaction with the Users (IAF, IMD, etc.) b) Interaction with the Subcontractors. c) Interaction with production agencies (ECIL, BDL, SMPU, etc.) for the transfer of know-how d) System installation and field trials. e) System maintenance. f) Documentation of the know-how generated. g) Technical guidance to a team of about 20 engineers. h) Selection and Procurement of components and equipments for the group. MODULAR SYSTEMS
In August 1983, started Modular Systems with other parners The Company located in Pune, undertook and successfully completed a number of high technology computerized systems and products which were not being manufactured in India till then. These products saved valuable foreign exchange by doing import substitution. The achievements of the Company are briefly summarized below:-
1) Designed developed and installed an 'Automatic Card Tester' for M/s Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) of Hyderabad. The Micro Processor based Test Equipment was specially designed for Electrical Testing of Digital and Analog Electronic PCBs used in the firing Post for Anti Tank Missiles (MILAN) manufactured by M/s BDL in collaboration with M/s MBB of West Germany. The Test Equipment was approved by M/s BDL in concurrence with technical experts from MBB. The equipment was installed at BDL in March 1986 and is operational since then. This import substitution has saved $ 1,20,000/- in Foreign Exchange.
2) Designed developed and installed an integrated Test Equipment GDPI at BDL. This was specially designed for M/s BDL for their testing department for checking battery,filter and Gyro in the Missiles manufactured by them. The equipment costing was installed in December 1985 and is operational since then. 3) Designed and developed the first Computerized CRT based Photo-typeseting System in India. This system, consists of an input unit for text entry and editing in all Indian Languages and English and an output unit which exposes photographic paper with images generated by a Computer on Cathode Ray Tube (CRT). The exposed paper is then developed and used as master copy for plate making by the printing presses.This equipment involved complex computerized hardware and software development which was successfully done totally in-house without any foreign collaboration. Each phototypesetting system was substantially cheaper than equivalent foreign machines. The output quality of Indian Languages in terms of perfection of composition and variety of type faces was not available on imported machines which were basically designed for English like languages. Modular Systems has been manufacturing and selling these machines from 1985 onwards and there are a large number of installations in various parts of India. 4) Designed and developed Software for Desk Top Publishing Systems which are the state-of-art in Desk Top Publishing Office Automation Markets. These systems using Personal Computers (PCs) and Laser-printers and appropriate software allow printed output to be generated on the Laser printer using plain paper. The entire operation is quicker, cheaper and sophisticated in terms of facilities provided than any previous method. All Indian Languages are being offered on Laser-Printer by Modular Systems. The various features provided by the software include variety of type-styles, preview on screen and dot-matrix printer, page-make up and Laser-printer output. The Software has been very well received by the DTP Market. The cumulative sale of the software has exceeded Rs.4.0 crores. 5) The Company has become the leading Software developer for Indian Languages. The current softwares which are very popular in India are-
a) Shreelipi- The Windows based multilingual software which is a font collection and keyboarding program to interface with the packages such as Pagemaker, Corel Draw, MS-Word, etc. This software is the leading product in the DTP software market throughout India and also some foreign countries. b) Prateek- This is the ID card making software suitable for generation of Voter's ID cards required by Election Commission of India. The Data Entry module of software allows Data Entry to be done in Local Languages of the states and automatically transliterate the data in to English. The Grabbing Module captures video images of the voters and after video processing, stores in computer in compact format. The Printing Module prints the Voter ID-Cards on Laser Printers by combining Voter image and the Voter data. c) Shabda Sagar - This is the multilingual software for DOS environment. This software, with similar features as WORDSTAR, allows text to be eyed-in in all Indian
Languages and also English and provides quality output on Laser inters as well as dot matrix printers. d) Ankur - Substantial contribution to development of Ankur 1.0 and Ankur 1.2 – the Indian Language Software suit (on CD) for the Small Office Home Office (SOHO) market. Ankur consists of Shree-Lipi keyboard handler, a powerful Indian language word Processor – Patrika, some Indian language cliparts and an appointment scheduler. Patrika word processor includes lot of user friendly features like mail merge, Roopa word art, insertion of date/time in Indian language, number to word conversion for India languages, etc. e) Ankur Office – Complete project management and technical guidance given for this product which is the Windows based Office solution with look and feel in 10 Indian Languages. This package contains full-fledged multi-lingual word-processor, spread-sheet, presentation software, e-mail client, Internet browser, data-base manager, Picture-drawing software, Label-maker, Collection of quality Indian language fonts and cliparts
6) Since 1983, handling the research and development activities of the Company These include the font development, software development, management and leading the team of software development engineers.
Founder member in the formation and working of Modular Infotech Private Limited with a strategic tie-up with M/s. TVS Electronics Limited in April, 2000, in the capacity of Chairman & Joint Managing Director. This Company is the corporatised entity of the earlier partnership firm. This entity has been formed to jointly leverage (with TVSE), the expertise of the directors and human resources, in terms of domain knowledge and platform skills. Modular InfoTech has also been investing its efforts and resources in the development of some of the solutions, which are of utmost significance in future. These solutions are (1) Font Scaling and Rasterization and Hinting. (2) Open TrueType fonts for Indian languages. The suite contains Wordprocessor, SpreadSheet, Presentation Software, Email Client, Paintbrush, Personal-Organizer, Database-Manager, Label-Maker, Clock, Calender etc. (5) Embedded Software (firmware) development - Guided the projects for various printer-manufacturing companies for embedding Indic language fonts and composition logic in the firmware of the printers (DMPs and LMPs) . (6) Photoshop Plug-in development projects - Guided a project for writing photoshop plug-ins for a European end-user. Indian Railways.. These include Centrally Controlled Display Systems for advertising and information display on railway station, computerized reaction time testing systems for the Psycho technic testing Laboratories of Railways (RDSO).
6) the Company designed and productionised Numerically Controlled Drilling
Machines controlled by Computer Software for drilling of Printed Circuit Boards. These machines, designed and developed for the first time in India were well received by the Industry. These high value machines were manufactured and sold to various PCB manufacturers. The firm also manufactured two machines for it's own use and set up a CNC drilling services facility in 1994. This facility is providing drilling services since then to PCB manufacturers on OEM basis.

Project Management Guided and managed a project for the design and development of a software project for accounting and procurement of milk transactions in the co-operative milk segment. This is a database and financial accounting and inventory oriented project. JOB EXPERIENCE :-
1) Was selected as a Graduate Trainee in TELCO, Pune. Worked there from August 1974 to
October 1974. 2) In March 1975 joined Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bombay as Scientific Officer
(SC) 3) Designed an developed some modules of an automatic, fully computerized trunk telephone
exchange being developed for the Indian Army. 4) Designed and developed a traffic simulator for testing the electronic telephone exchange. 5) Was involved in the design of a filing system to be used in local area network. 6) Was promoted to the post of Scientific Officer (SD). 7) Supervised the overall activities of the hardware design group for the digital exchange. 8) Gave lectures to students of MSc (Computer Science), Bombay University in operating
system. 9) Guided MSc/ M-Tech Projects for students of Bombay University. i) Microprocessor based PABX. ii) Design of operating system written in Modula. 10) In 1983, left T.I.F.R. Bombay to join Modular Systems, Pune as Senior Systems Engineer,
later to become General Manager.
11) Was involved in the design, development and production of a CRT based Photo-typesetting machine. This is the first machine, which is totally indigenously designed. This systems consists of an input unit for text entry and editing in all Indian languages and English and an output unit which exposes photographic paper with images generated by a computer on Cathode Ray Tube (CRT). The exposed paper is then developed and used as master copy for plate making by the printing presses. This equipment involved complex computerized hardware and software development, which was successfully done totally in-house without any foreign collaboration. Each phototypesetting system was substantially cheaper than equivalent foreign machines. The output quality of Indian languages in terms of perfection of composition and variety of typefaces was not available on imported machines, which were basically designed for English like languages. The Company manufactured and sold these machines from 1985 onwards and there were a large number of installations in various parts of India.
12) Participated in the design and development of the Desk Top Publishing software. This
software works for all Indian Languages like Marathi, Hindi, Gujarati, Bengali, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Vedic Sanskrit, etc.
13) Designed and developed a supporting software package for typesetting Mathematical text. 14) Designed and developed the 'Shabda Sagar' word processing Package for DOS
environment. This software allows word processing of all Indian Languages and English and also has 'Spell-checking' facility which is Dictionary based.
15) Designed and developed the 'Prateek' ID Card making software, for making ID Cards for
Voters as per requirements of Election Commission. This involved the design and development of the Voters Data Entry Module with transliteration facility, participation in the design and development of image grabbing and printing software.
16) Participated in the design development and maintenance of the first version of Shree-Lipi
Desk Top Publishing Software – Windows based multilingual software including font collection and keyboard handling program to interface with the packages such as PageMaker, CorelDraw, MSWord, etc. It also includes lot of utilities like a font styler, text styler, spellchecker, etc.
17) Worked as the 'General Manager' of the Company supervising the Software production,
testing, dispatches and customer support and Commercial functions through the Managers of the respective departments. Later working as the Technical Director of the Company, providing management and direction to the Intranet software Tools, Internet and Web-based software tools, and projects activity of the Company
18) Participated in the design and development of Script Master, which is complete DTP
Software running in DOS environment. The Software supports printing on dot matrix printers, non-PostScript Laser printers (HP compatible), PostScript laser printers and DeskJet printers. The entire operation is quicker, cheaper and sophisticated in terms of facilities provided then any previous method. All Indian languages are being offered on all the printers. The various features provided by the software include variety of typestyles, preview on screen and dot matrix printer, page-make up image printing and Laser-printer output. The software has been very well received by the Desk Top Publishing Market.

25) Substantial participation in development and management of development of Shree-Lipi
Samhita – the Indian language software developer’s Toolkit from the Company. Samhita allows software developers to make their software Indian language enabled. The applications can then allow typing in Indian languages, data storage in either font codes or ISCII codes (which allow sorting of data), transliteration of names data and printing on dot matrix printers. All these facilities are given as API calls supported in DLLs.
26) Participated in substantial way in the design and development of all the versions of Shree-
Lipi- the latest version being Shree-Lipi 7.1, which is the current flagship product of Modular Infotech Pvt. Ltd.
27) Participated in substantial way in the design and development of Web Samhita – the toolkit
for the design of Indian language web sites. Shree-Lipi Braille Chief Architect of Shree-Lipi Braille conversion software for all Indian languages to
Braille, and significant contribution to Braille Library.
