UPDATES ON WORK STREAMS
WORKSTREAM #1: OPERATIONAL EMISSIONS
Background: This workstream is producing a
framework which RSPO members can use to
measure, monitor and report GHGs within their
operations as well as identifying voluntary actions
on GHG management. The lead author of this
workstream is Cecile Bessou from CIRAD.
Status: Members of this group met in Singapore
on 5 & 6 October, 2010. The group, led by the
lead author, reported back to the full GHG WG2 on
their progress since the last sub-group meeting in
May 2010.
Key updates include: (1) refinement of goal and
scope; (2) refinement of the system boundary; (3)
summary of literature analysis on 22 LCA-based
studies, 4 regulatory guidelines, 5 methodologies
and reporting tools, and available background
data; (4) Input data required by user; and (5)
framework tool design.
GHG WG2 members spent some time in
discussions during breakout groups brainstorming
what information would be feasible to collect from
plantation and mill levels.
Next steps towards RT8 (Nov 8 -11, 2010):
Activity/ output
Complete compilation of ‘generic’ values including
minimum and maximum values
Prepare a poster illustrating structure and
functionalities of the framework tool
Organise side-event for RT8 to allow for participant
feedback on structure of framework tool
Attached are:

WG2 meeting 3 by Cecile Bessou (CIRAD) (see
page 10)
List of group members (see page 15)
WORKSTREAM #2: PEATLAND WG
Background: This workstream is focusing on
emissions related to operational management of
peat and is exploring and developing business
models for optimising sustainability of existing oil
palm systems. The co-chairs of this workstream
are Rosediana Suharto (IPOC) and Faizal Parish
(Global Environmental Centre).
Status: The group has met twice since being
convened, with the most recent meeting held in
Kuala Lumpur between 22 and 24 September,
2010. Faizal Parish reported back to the GHG WG2
on their progress to date.
Key updates since the last GHG WG2 meeting in
May, include: (1) completion of literature review on
carbon flux estimates and GHG emissions from oil
palm cultivation in Tropical Peatlands in South
East Asia (outline of review can be viewed on page
29; (2) further updates on workplan and budget;
(3) discussion of the draft Best Management
Practice guidelines; (4) arrangement of 3 field
assessments in Selangor, Sarawak and Riau
between 2010 and 2011.
Next steps towards RT8 (Nov 8-11, 2010):
Activity/ output
Report on key progress and targets of the group
Complete draft of Best Management Practices
guidelines
Present literature review on Peatland and GHG
emissions
Complete management and rehabilitation options for
HCVF, buffer strips and abandoned areas.

WORKSTREAM #3: SCIENTIFIC PANEL
Background: The scientific panel is reviewing
existing information about land use and land use
change and its impact on GHGs including
identifying gaps and areas of uncertainty in the
current body of information. This information will
be used to develop a series of future scenarios to
examine the impact of different land management
options. The lead author of this workstream is
Fahmuddin Agus (IAARD, GAPKI).
Status: The group has met three times since being
convened, with the most recent meeting held in
Kuala Lumpur between 24 and 25 September,
2010. Fahmuddin reported back to the GHG WG2
on their progress to date.
Key updates include: (1) Finalization of ToRs; (2)
completion (almost) of land use change matrix for
Papua; (3) continuation of analysis and research
on burning effects on peat; (4) continuation of
work on the selection of emission factors; (5)
commencement of analysis on land conversion for
the main oil palm producing countries;
Next steps towards RT8 (Nov 8-11, 2010):
Activity/ output
Complete above ground and below ground carbon
stocks, particularly for mineral soils
Provision of a sample land use change matrix
Completion of a framework for calculating carbon
using a mock-spreadsheet
Attached are:
Workstream #3 progress presentation at GHG
WG2 meeting 3 by Fahmuddin Agus (see page
36 )
List of group members (see page 45)
WORKSTREAM #4: POLICY PANEL
Background: The purpose of this panel will be to
focus on the legal, institutional and policy barriers
to implementing strategies to reduce GHG
emissions – particularly those related to land-use
change.
Status: The GHG WG2 members spent some time
in discussions in breakout groups brainstorming
what issues the policy panel should look into.
Common themes brought up included: (1)
Feasibility of implementing REDD programmes in a
oil palm context; (2) lack of harmonization of
regulatory frameworks; (3) Feasibility of
implementing land-swaps
Next steps towards RT8 (Nov 8-11, 2010):
The co-chairs and facilitators are to analyse all the
points raised during this session and provide
feedback to the WG2 about possible roles of the
policy panel.
WORKSTREAM #5: EMISSIONS FROM OTHER
RSPO MEMBERS
Background: This workstream is focusing on the
activities being undertaken by RSPO membership
categories other than producers and processors,
including investors, NGOs etc, to reduce and
manage their emissions.
Status: Participants that belong to this
membership category summarised and presented
to the WG2 the voluntary actions that their
respective companies were taking to reducing and
addressing their GHG emissions.
WORKSTREAM #6: ENGAGEMENT WITH RSPO
MEMBERS
Background: This workstream is collecting
information on the voluntary actions which RSPO
members are already planning or implementing to
better understand and manage GHGs from
production and processing.
The data collected for this workstream will feed
into workstream #1. This workstream hopes to
capture information about best management
practices that are currently being employed by
producers/ processors in terms of addressing
and/or reducing GHG emissions.
Status: Participants that belong to this
membership category summarised and presented
to the WG2 the voluntary actions that their
respective companies were taking to reducing and
addressing their GHG emissions.

(SimeDarby) to provide an overview of activities
already underway to address and reduce GHG
emissions.
Communications
The WG2 discussed ways to ensure that
communication of the activities and progress of
RSPO GHG WG2 is consistently communicated and
reaches all relevant stakeholders.
Next steps towards RT8 (Nov 8-11, 2010):
Activity/ output
