I hope all of our families had a great holiday.
The students have returned to school in a very
positive manner. All students arrived in full
school uniform on the first day.
The Academic Achievement Centre began on
the first Thursday and immediately the library
was full of students and staff ensuring each
student participant will move significantly forward
in this coming school year. Sessions occur on
Tuesday mornings from 8.00am until roll call at
8.55am, and on Thursday afternoons from
3.15pm to 4.30pm. Transport will need to be
arranged by parents to and from the school for
their child to participate in the program.
Yesterday I attended the Leaders Induction
Ceremony at Woolgoolga Public School. Our
school is so lucky to have such great primary
schools delivering a first rate education to their
students. The local public schools continue to
prepare our youngest students for a successful
life. At the assembly, our two School Captains
Alex Rook and Kaleb Darbin spoke on leader-
ship. Alex was captain and Kaleb was dux of
Woolgoolga Primary School so they were able to
connect with the school’s current students. Last
year’s captains of Woolgoolga Primary, Amos
Roworth and Riley March, also spoke to the
assembly and wished their new leaders well.
From the Principal’s Desk
An invitation is extended to all parents/carers

specialising in helping students with study skills
and how to prepare for examinations, will be at
our school on Monday 11 February. A parent
information session about both these resources
will commence at 5.30pm in the library. More
information is included on page 3.
On page 4 of this newsletter an invitation is
extended to all parents/carers of Year 7 students
to come to our school for a welcome sausage
sizzle and I encourage all to attend. It will be
held Tuesday 12 February from 5.00pm. The

ATOMI and Elevate Session for Parents
We are fortunate to have representatives from
Elevate Education and ATOMI here to present to
students, staff and parents this coming Monday.
Elevate helps with study skills such as time
management, memory techniques and exam
preparation. ATOMI is an online platform for our
senior students that provides a wealth of
resources to enhance the curriculum they access
at school.
There will be a parent information session
covering both of these resources, and parents/
carers of students in Years 10, 11 and 12 are
encouraged to come along:
Monday 11 February
5.30 to 6.30pm in the school library
Year 12 2018 – Parent testimonial “I have had recent personal experience with this brilliant study resource as my eldest son, Jack Tay-lor of Year 12, used the learning site daily in solid preparation for his HSC exams and I can honestly say, that it was invaluable towards his studies across many of the core units such as Business Studies, PDHPE, Mathematics and Biology. ATOMI provided the entire HSC course revision online through a multimedia platform and my son found it very easy to understand and follow, even providing a study planner for the month before the HSC to help keep him on track with his studies. This modern learning resource is fantastic and I am very grateful that Woolgoolga High provided this for all our children. I encourage parents/carers of current Year 11 and 12 to attend an information session …… parents feel more invested with the understanding and knowledge of how ATOMI works to really help and support their children through their HSC studies; a big positive for any family in that semi-stressful exam time.” Tracey Taylor

Starting high school is a very exciting time in your
child’s life. Some students may be nervous about
starting high school, as it is a very different experi-
ence to primary school. The important thing for
them to remember is that they are not alone. As
their Year Adviser, I am here to help and support
your child during this transition, and throughout the
rest of their high school years. There are also
many other staff and students who are here to
support your child during their time at Woolgoolga
High School.
The P&C is hosting an Evening Sausage Sizzle on
Tuesday 12 February from 5.00 to 6.30pm for
parents and caregivers to meet the Principal and
Year Adviser of Year 7. An information session on
BYOD will be included.
We are looking forward to sharing your child’s
journey over the next six years. We will work
together as a year group to make these years
happy, rewarding and a pathway into lifelong
learning.
What Does a Year Adviser Do?
Listen when you need someone to
talk to.
Explain school routine when you are
unsure what to do.
Conduct Year Meetings to keep
students informed of school activities
and requirements.
Maintain an overview of students’
progress.
Liaise with parents/caregivers.
Organise social activities for you so
that high school is fun as well as
work.
Help you if you are having difficulties
with your schoolwork.
Help you if you get into trouble at
school.
Help you when you are having
problems with your friends, family or
school in general.
Just remember—you are all legends!
Invitation to Evening BBQ to
Meet the Principal and Year 7 Adviser
Students start secondary school with different skills and abilities in literacy and numeracy. It is important that Year 7
teachers have access to information about their new students, to plan their teaching accordingly.
What is Best Start Year 7?
Best Start Year 7 is a new literacy and numeracy assessment package for schools to use in the first five weeks of Year
7. It is designed to:
provide teachers with consistent and up-to-date information about new students' skills and abilities in literacy
and numeracy
identify students at risk of falling behind
help inform targeted teaching and intervention strategies.
The assessment package will include links to syllabus, the learning progressions and support material.
Best Start Year 7 has been trialled in a small number of schools in 2018, and will be made available to all NSW
secondary schools in 2019.

Woolgoolga High School Uniform
At Woolgoolga High we like to call it "Dress for Success".
It is important that all students are comfortable and able to move
freely at school. School uniform policy and guidelines can be
viewed here .
Dress for Success in Physical Education and Physical Activity Sport uniform should be
worn on Wednesday for
Years 8-12 and Thursday
for Year 7. These are the
respective sport days for
each year group.
It is important, as can be
noted from the Dress for
Success poster, for young
people to wear suitable
clothes in order to be
comfortable, safe, free
and healthy during
physical activity.
During PE lessons
students are required to
change into and out of
their school sports
uniform. Mufti clothes are
not acceptable.

On Wednesday 19/12/2018 a number of Year 11 Woolgoolga High School students visited the
Coffs Harbour Health Campus to make a donation from the profits of their first fundraising
event to Coffs Harbour Health Campus. This donation included cash, lolly bags and cards
written from the students to be given out in the children’s ward on Christmas Day, a small gift to
make their day special.
The donation was warmly received by staff who were very appreciative of our students and the
difference their donation could make to the unwell children in hospital during Christmas.
Giving something to those in need!

BAND PROGRAM
Towards the end of 2018, Mr Wright
purchased more musical instruments to further
encourage the continuation of the new
Woolgoolga High School band program. This
program will be implemented by Mr Young
and, for a small fee each term, instruments are
available for hire via our Muso Club program.
This is a wonderful opportunity for students to
investigate and develop their interest in play-
ing an instrument within a group environment
at a very low cost.
CHOIR PROGRAM
Each year in May, interested singers are
invited to participate in the Sydney Town Hall
Combined Choir Excursion where students
learn sophisticated repertoire and develop life-
long vocal skills. This 3-day excursion also
includes seeing a current stage musical in one
of Sydney’s large theatres. The singers are
then encouraged to continue learning new
repertoire in the school Vocal Ensemble
throughout the year.
OTHER PROGRAMS
Drumming: we have 20 djembes and several
dun-duns. Drumming ‘workshops’ are held
throughout the year.
Guitars/Ukuleles: Group practices are held
regularly during Break 2 and also when friends
just turn up to ‘jam’.
New Year Greetings to all our Muso’s who
frequent the Music Block during breaks and
welcome to our new Year 7 cohort who will
frequent the Music Block for their Music
lessons!
Your Music teachers this year are Ms Drinan,
Mr Berglund and for Senior Music, Mr Young
who will be in The Block mainly on Wednes-
days (Maths Staffroom any other day).
Mr Sweed (from our Wellbeing Team) also
joins the Music staff to run drumming work-
shops and to support any student practising in
the Music room (bass/guitar/drum kit).
Music rooms are open during Breaks 1 and 2
for students who wish to practise individually
or in a group, and it is mandatory for ALL
students to check in with a Music teacher
before entering the room, one of whom is
generally always in the vicinity.
During the year, there are many opportunities
for our singers and musicians to perform. The
annual ‘In Concert’ Secondary Schools
Combined Choral Performance in the Sydney
Town Hall is open to singers in Years 8-12
(mid-Term 2). Our school Talent Quest (end of
Term 2) is open to all Performing Arts students
and our prestigious Concert of Excellence (mid
-Term 3) is a grand finale for our Year 12 HSC
performers. During each term, there will be
several ‘Open Mic’ opportunities on the Music
Room Stage for budding singers, musicians,
actors, jugglers and joke-tellers. As well, there
will be Assembly performances by elective
Music students.
Music Notes from the Music Block
Please do not hesitate to contact any
of our Music staff to discuss your
child’s interests and/or requirements
regarding his/her music education.

Safety First
Parents, carers and students are reminded not
to use the staff car park for dropping off or pick-
ing up their children, unless using the disabled
parking bays.
Our car park is very congested, especially on
rainy days, directly before school begins and
after school finishes. Parking is available at the
front of the school for safety and a covered
walkway for students’ convenience leads from
the bus bay into the grounds.
Change of Details
Please notify the Front Office if you have not
informed the school of any change of details.
It is vital the school has up to date records
should you need to be contacted in case of
an emergency.
Form is available from the front office.
