The VCM supports a system of syllabi and examinations on many woodwind and brass instruments, certified through the Ministry of Education. This represents a thorough coverage of materials, more than any other system in Canada, through 11 consecutive grades. The system culminates with AVCM in Performance (flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, trumpet, trombone) or AVCM in Teaching (flute), as well as Artist Certificate for Flute.

Individual Lessons The VCM offers private lessons in classical music on all modern woodwind, brass and percussion instruments, including: flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone, euphonium, tuba, and percussion (rhythmic and melodic).

Instruction is offered on instruments in the families above as areas of specialization, or as adjunct study with other instruments, including but not limited to: piccolo, alto and bass flute, Irish flute, tin whistle, bass and E-flat clarinet, contrabassoon, English horn, and soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophone.

Chamber music coaching for a standing ensemble is available from most instructors as a shared lesson. Students wishing to include chamber music as one aspect of their individual lessons may exchange a coaching session for a scheduled individual lesson at any point in the term (check with instructor at time of registration).

Please phone 250-386-5311 or email [email protected] to be referred to an appropriate instructor.

Performance Practice and Early InstrumentsInstructors and instrument areas include the following:

Stacey Boal: Recorder — Advanced studies focusing on songs, dances and suites of the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods, ornamentation and performance practice, with introduction to duets, trios, continuo and consorts.

Lana Betts-Enns: Baroque Flute

Austin Scott: Old-system and early Boehm flute

Mary Byrne: Period Performance Practice and Post-1900 Extended Techniques (flute)

Group Classes Participating in group classes at the VCM is a great way to gain musical experience in a fun and supportive environment. Our group classes offer students a wonderful opportunity to meet new friends, play great music and learn from amazing instructors!
