Sunnyside Library Temporary ClosureQueens Library at 43-06

will provide limited service ev-ery Friday from 8:30 am - 5 pmduring the closure.

With food from nearbyMurphy’s Lobster Grill andplenty of good cheer, a new artgallery/furniture store opened at48-14 Skillman Ave. inSunnyside last Sunday.

Located at the former site ofComic Book Heaven, theApolloina Art Emporium willsell everything from paintingsto photos to prints, accordingto owner Garry O’Callaghan,who added that he is seekinglocal artists to display their workthere. Prices will probably runfrom $50 up to $5,000.

O’Callaghan is also a carpen-ter, and as such, he will exhibit hisown furniture in the storefront.

For now, Apolloina will beopen Tuesday through Fridayfrom 3 pm to 6 pm and Saturdayand Sunday from 9 am to 8 pm.

$1.1 Million To FundCommercial CorridorsQueens Borough President Melinda Katz

announced the allocation of more than onemillion dollars in capital funds to pay forstreetscape improvements along commercialcorridors in several Queens neighborhoods.

The improvements are intended to en-hance and revitalize commercial shoppingdistricts in order to promote business devel-opment and investment in those areas and toencourage residents to patronize local es-tablishments. It is widely recognized thaturban areas need to have attractive commer-cial shopping districts to ensure the devel-opment of healthy, vibrant neighborhoods.

“The commercial corridors found inthe diverse neighborhoods throughoutQueens are key assets and economic en-gines for our borough,” Borough Presi-dent Katz said. “The funds I am allocatingto enhance these commercial corridors willhelp them maximize their potential as re-tail centers and civic gathering places.These capital improvements will help ourborough’s small businesses create jobsand offer quality goods and services formany years to come.”

The allocations total $1,110,950 and willfund seven projects to take place along com-mercial corridors in Queens. Borough Presi-dent Katz worked with local neighborhoodorganizations to determine the best ways theBorough President could allocate this com-mercial corridor funding, which will be dis-tributed through several City agencies.The funded projects are as follows:

1) DOWNTOWN JAMAICA - $229,000Location: Jamaica Avenue between

Woodside On The Move’s Learning Labby Adrian Bordoni

Woodside On the Move in part-nership with Time Warner Cable,held a ribbon cutting for a newLearning Lab at WOTM’s main of-fices: over 30 computers, tabletsand other equipment purchasedthrough a $55,000 grant. Throughthe support of CongressmanCrowley, the community will haveaccess to computer classes and otherprograms for all ages to minimizethe digital divide. Woodside On TheMove already has an award win-ning 3D printing team; they are add-ing coding, robotics and 3D designclasses for their afterschool students.Creativity and fun will be the em-phasis as the participants create theirown video journals, interview theirfamily and research the history ofWoodside. In addition, special at-tention will be provided to workingin college prep programs, tutoringand business/technology workshopsfor school aged participants.

Woodside On The Move willprovide technology classes, jobreadiness programs, includingresume preparation, interviewskills and searching and apply-ing for jobs online.
