The trees are popping out, the daffodils are up, and the forsythia is blooming. And the air is full of pollen. And now the yard work is screaming for aenon. Along with several other club members, I spent last weekend with the undisputed King of Chip Carving, Wayne Barton. This was Wayne’s third visit to our club. We put in three full days of intense but fun work and we all came away beer carvers. We’ve already picked out our projects for next March. See Jim Hiser to reserve your seat for 2017. While we’re on the subject of our seminars, I think a lot of us are spoiled by the seemingly endless parade of world class carving instructors Jim Hiser has parading over our door step here in East Berlin. There can’t be but one or two other clubs in the US that have access to such talent. If you’re not availing yourself to some of these classes, you should be. And if you are, you need to thank Jim & Joan for making them possible. And speaking of extremely talented carvers, I just received my March/April CHIPCHATS yesterday. Three of our members had their award winning carvings featured in the CCA compeon report. Congratulaons to Jim Hiser, Bob Hershey, and Bruce Stake. Nice going guys! PLANNING MEETING REMINDER: Beginning this month, we’re moving our planning meengs from the usual Tuesday evening slot to an hour before our regular Sunday meengs. We’re hoping this will be more convenient and that more folks will aend. (The planning meengs are held every other month: Jan, Mar, May, July, Sept, & Nov.) A Message from Our President It sure looks like Spring has arrived early, at least down here in Annapolis. The trees are popping out, the daffodils are up, and the forsythia is blooming. And the air is full of pollen. And now the yard work is screaming for attention. Along with several other club members, I spent last weekend with the undisputed King of Chip Carving, Wayne Barton. This was Wayne’s third visit to our club. We put in three full days of intense but fun work and we all came away better carvers. We’ve already picked out our projects for next March. MONTHLY PROGRAMS: Coming up for our March meeting (3-20-16) Tressa Barnhart, our esteemed Treasurer, has arranged for Paul Wildisan, a noted member of the Carroll Carvers to present our monthly program discussing the nuances of bird carving. Thanks to Boyd Shoemaker for last month’s program. For our April meeting, Mike Galloway, noted carver and widely acclaimed woodturning expert, will present a program and demonstration on woodturning fundamentals. (We’ll have a lathe set up for the demo.) TUESDAY NIGHT CARVING: Linda Cubero has volunteered to conduct a painting clinic over a two evenings session for anyone who needs help (or just some guidance) with their painting. Linda can work with acrylics, oils, or water colors. Linda, a well know horse wrangler, was trained as painter and designer before discovering wood carving. Bring your brushes (and oil or water colors if you’re using those)—we have acrylic paints in our club room. And something to paint. THURSDAY NIGHT POWER CARVING: Soon to resume. Stay tuned. LANCASTER SHOW: The Lancaster County Wood Carvers show is coming up the weekend after Easter—April 2 & 3 at Millersville University. The Dennis Thorton, Roz Daisy, & Jim Hiser seminars to have immediately followed the show (M-T-W) have been canceled. However, Kathy Overcash’s bark carving class will proceed on schedule. There may still be openings for Kathy’s class—call Andy DiPace for info (717-394-2262). SOAP CARVING: I had a note this week from Bob Duncan (of WOODCARVING ILLUSTRATED fame) asking if we knew of anyone that could demo soap carving at the upcoming Fox Chapel Open House to be held in May (see below for info). This particular demo will be targeting kids. Fox Chapel will supply the soap, tools, and patterns. Anyone interested???
