This supplement is published by The Copenhagen Post in co-operati on with Wondercool, please refer to our disclaim-er on page 2 of the newspaper.
Wondercool, which started on Wednesday,
is a winter festi val organised by Wonder-
ful Copenhagen at which we’re all wel-
come. That’s a lot of Ws!
But before you get stuck into our second of four spe-
cial supplements about the festi val, you should be
aware that of the seven themes prevailing over Febru-
ary, two are relati vely short-lived aff airs: fashion and
jazz, which explains why we have paid them special at-
tenti on in issues one and two respecti vely.
This week’s focus on jazz includes an exclusive inter-
view with legendary drummer Jack DeJohnett e, who
is gracing Koncerthuset with his presence on Sunday
(see page 5 for details), the same day that the fashion
festi val – bar a few events – prett y much draws to a
close.
So if jazz or fashion is your passion, don’t hang around
procrasti nati ng because it won’t mean a thing if you
weren’t there to swing.

Copenhagen Jazz Festival Honorary Award: Palle Mikkelborg + Jack DeJohnetteKoncerthuset, Koncertsalen, Emil Holms Kanal 20, Cph C; Sun Feb 5, 20:00; Tickets: 220-470kr; 3393 2013 By Johnny Niemann
Drummers may be the most vital instrumentalists to other
jazz musicians, but aside from a resounding solo here and
there, they can be the least appreciated musicians by an
audience. A soaring saxophone can cause you to swoon, or a pi-
anist can take you on a ride up and down the keyboard, all while
the jazz drummer does the workman-like duty of keeping the beat,
supporting the other musicians, and leading into and rounding off
scorching solos.
It’s only just then, that in the course of a couple of months, the
great 69-year-old drummer Jack DeJohnette gets his due. On 10
January in New York City, DeJohnette was awarded one of the high-
est American honours a jazz musician can receive: the National En-
dowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Fellowship. And on 5 February
in Copenhagen, DeJohnette will be awarded the Copenhagen Jazz
Festival Honorary Award.
But don’t worry. It won’t just be speeches when DeJohnette ac-
cepts his prize - he’s here to play. As the winter edition of the Jazz
Festival’s director Signe Lopdrup says: ‘Instead of offering them a
large cheque, we have chosen to give them a broadened economic
framework so each can create his special project and perform it at
Koncerthuset.’
Audiences should be excited too. DeJohnette was here just this
summer for a splendid performance with pianist Keith Jarrett and
bassist Gary Peacock - the beloved trio he has been a part of for
the past 25 years. On this occasion, he’ll play with his own accom-
plished trio, featuring the Spanish pianist Chano Dominguez, and
the American bassist and guitarist Jerome Harris.
“It’s great to be acknowledged for doing what I do,” said DeJohnette
in an interview with The Copenhagen Post. “It inspires me to put
more energy into my composing and my work. It is an honour that
I am very grateful to receive and I am looking forward to coming to
Copenhagen to play.”
The Chicago-born DeJohnette has played with some of the most leg-
endary musicians jazz, or music for that matter, has to offer. Miles
Davis, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Charles Lloyd and Ornette Cole-
man to name but a few. He says what makes these artists unique is
that “they have vision and they have trust in their musicians. These
were people who were able to move the music forward. And that
was passed on to me from all these players.”
Jazz musicians seem to be especially concerned with tending to
the flame and passing on their experience and ideas. In his role as
a jazz legend, he works with and supports young, up-and-coming
musicians such as Esperanza Spalding, Lionel Loueke, and Thomas
Enhco.
“I try to give back in the same way that the musicians that I came up
with gave to me. You exchange ideas, inspire them and they inspire
Jack’s a legend, Jack is slick, he’s a master with two drumsticks
you. You help raise their level of experience by playing with them. There always should be that exchange between the elders and the
young people. That’s always been a tradition in jazz. It’s important to keep that connection going. It’s a community.”
As a composer, DeJohnette is conscious of the times he lives in, crafting such tunes as Song for World Forgiveness and even releasing a
Grammy-nominated album designed for relaxation and meditation. “Jazz deals with improvisation and in life we have to be able to im-
provise, particularly now in the social, economic and political climate that we live in,” DeJohnette says. “We have to learn how to adjust
in the moment. How can you not be influenced by these times? The environment we live in affects me as a composer and an artist.”
DeJohnette studied classical piano as a child. As a young musician he was equally in demand for his piano playing as well as for his drum-
ming - something that perhaps lends to his special sound. “For me drums are an orchestral instrument, as complete an instrument as a
piano is,” DeJohnette says. “Over the years I have developed a melodic as well as a rhythmic style playing the instrument. I colour the
music as well as propel the music at the same time.’
Supporting and leading his trio, and welcoming some of the Latin sounds of Dominguez’s Flamenco-piano playing chops, DeJohnette
promises that the evening in Copenhagen will have the sound, trust, vision, improvisation, and thoughtful soulfulness listeners have
come to expect from DeJohnette’s music.

Joshua Redman TrioKoncerthuset, Studio 2, Emil Holms Kanal 20, Cph C; Mon Feb 13, 20:00; ti ckets: 350kr; 3393 2013
Joshua Redman’s forays into Copenhagen are always exciti ng events. The US saxophonist Redman,
himself once the musical director of the San Francisco Jazz Festi val, is a veteran of the Copenhagen Jazz
Festi val. But audiences never ti re of Redman, primarily because he’s a gift ed and engaging musician
and composer, but also because each concert he’s had over the past few years — be it a solo-show, an
avant-garde two drummers/two bassists performance, or this past summer’s duet with pianist Brad
Mehldau — is fresh and dynamic. Redman is here this ti me with his trio at the snazzy new Koncerthu-
set.
The Songs of Joni Mitchell feat Mona Larsen + Julie MariaKoncerthuset, Studio 2, Emil Holms Kanal 20, Cph C; Tue Feb 14, 20:00, ti ckets: 220kr; 3393 2013
The festi val is sending you your very own Valenti ne’s card in the shape of the music of singer/song-
writer Joni Mitchell performed by Danish singers Mona Larsen and Julia Maria. Bett er than a box of
chocolates or overpriced roses, Mitchell’s lyrics and music lend themselves to jazz. She has worked
with such legends as Charles Mingus and Herbie Hancock, and it should be exciti ng to hear two Danish
jazz stars interpret the moods and ideas of Mitchell’s music.
Celebrati ng Krzysztof Komeda – An Evening of fi lm + solo piano w. Leszek MozdzerDen Sorte Diamant, Søren Kierkegaards Plads 1, Cph K; Sat Feb 11, 20:00; ti ckets: 140kr; 3347 4225
The festi val has treated audiences to multi -media explorati ons in the past, most recently with the
great Bill Frisell’s music accompanying photographs by Mike Disfarmer. Innovati ve programming is on
display again at the Black Diamond when the Polish pianist Leszek Mozdzer celebrates the music of his
countryman, the late great composer and pianist Krzysztof Komeda, who is probably best known for
several fi lm scores he wrote for Roman Polanski’s fi lms in the 1960s. The evening begins with a fi lm,
followed by jazz, and is a dream for fi lm lovers and jazz buff s — and those fortunate enough to be both.
Sharon Jones and the Dap-KingsKoncerthuset, Studio 2, Emil Holms Kanal 20, Copenhagen C; Fri Feb 17, 21:00;
ti ckets: 295kr; 3393 2013
Jazz is soul, soul is jazz, jazz is funk, funk is jazz. Sharon Jones and the Dap-kings will drop some funky
and soulful sounds on a chilly February night. You might just fi nd yourself grooving so much that you’ve
forgott en you are supposed to be cold and morose.

JAZZBy Johnny NiemannAND ALL ITS RAZZAMATAZZ
Some people roast themselves under bright lights at tanning salons. Others are privi-
leged enough to jet away to some warm or tropical locati on. But for the rest of us, stuck
in the midst of grim winter, Copenhagen’s charms need a jump start, a jazzy kick.
So, be thankful for the musicians and good people who bring us the winter editi on of the
Copenhagen Jazz Festi val. Now in its 12th year, ‘Vinterjazz’ is of course organised by the same
folks who take care of summerti me’s highly-successful, internati onally-renowned, 33-year-old
Copenhagen Jazz Festi val. Kind of them to save a few sets from summer’s sunny days, no?
The winter festi val is a light version of the summer festi val. It doesn’t take over the city for ten
days, pouring out onto the streets, squares and alleys from the clubs and cafes; it is smaller in
scope, contenti ng itself with a few choice concerts and venues, shining from diff erent points
in the city from February 3-19.
The festi val offi cially takes place all over Denmark at 60 diff erent venues, but most of the
headliners, the brightest stars and internati onal names come to our chilly capital. What fol-
lows are some top picks and festi val highlights to help you stave off the winter blues with
some winter cool. But there’s plenty more! Check out www.jazz.dk or the ‘Vinterjazz’ app for
complete listi ngs or to buy ti ckets.]TOP
