City of Berwick Council

Following is part of the speech given by Reg Rowswell at the BBC Christmas Dinner Dance concerning our special guest, Councillor Mick Morland.

Good evening members and friends of the Berwick Bowling Club and welcome again to our Christmas Dinner Dance. As part of our celebration I would like to welcome our special guests, Kay & Mick Morland, to our Christmas Dinner Dance this evening. We welcome you Kay & Mick and hope you are enjoying your time with us tonight. We are taking this opportunity to recognise the support that Mick has given to our Club over the past 10 years as the Councillor for Edrington Ward. To give you some background to this extra-ordinary man and his service to the community, Mick was first elected to the City of Berwick Council in 1992. When the City of Casey was formed,

Mick was on the first Council held in 1997 serving through to 2008 and being our Mayor in 2001/2. During his last stint on the Council, which ended this year, he was again our Mayor in 2014/15. In the past 10 years Mick has enthusiastically supported the development of the Berwick Bowling Club. During that time the Council has contributed almost $600K to improvements around our Club. These include the sealing of the car park, and if you were a member here before this happened you never washed your car before coming to the Club, it was just one huge dust bowl all year round - $400K, the Covered Shelter adjacent to the Synthetic Green - $30K, Our Viewing Deck $140K and our security solar lighting in the car park - $15K.

LILA COTTER DAY Thank you, thank you to all who came to the Club at 7am to clean and set up for the Lila Cotter Day. It’s certainly not easy when the Club is let for a function the night before! Thank you to all who helped out in various ways, raffle ticket sellers, stall attendees, bar staff, kitchen staff, registration and umpire etc. Without this help the day would not have been a success and I am very appreciative. I had a number of pleasant phone calls and emails following the event commenting on the day and with promises of a return next season which augurs well for the future.

Christmas Dinner Dance

Thank you to those who attended the Christmas Dinner Dance on Friday, 9 December. It was a successful and fun filled night, we also managed to make a small profit considering the poor attendance. Thank you to Helen and Peter Adair for their donation for the raffle. We have approx. 270 members with only 35 members and their partners attending, 6 of these were the Social Committee!!! The Social Committee put in a big effort to make it a great evening for you all. So the numbers were disappointing, but we hope you all had a fun night. PS - A big thank you to Father Christmas

The Social Committee

and then later in the night........

CHRISTMAS RAFFLE

I would like to thank the members who donated goods for our hampers, we were able to put together 3 lovely hampers also 4 other prizes. A special thank you to Dennis Fry, who donated the Christmas Cake he made himself. Jim Blewett donated the Japanese Maple tree and Crocus bulbs. He has advised us that he has plants for sale at his home. If you are interested please ring him on 9707 2325. Vyvien Fisher donated the special Christmas Plum Pudding, which she made herself. Karl Lapinskas and David Fox-Smith donated the money to buy the Christmas ham. I was a bit disappointed with the response of the returned tickets. I sent out approx. 176 books and only 2/3 of these were returned. If we had got 1 book from each family, that would have been great. A big thank you to the members who did send them back. The winners were: 1st David McArthur 2nd Wendy Brown 3rd Margaret Glassenbury 4th Alan Clements 5th Ken Dorning 6th Sharane Lyons Have a Merry Christmas.

Laws 12 & 13, Penalty 13.3.1 Question: Can players proceed down the green while a bowl is in course? Answer: The player who has delivered the bowl has possession of the rink and

should have the benefit of observing the progress of their bowl without being obstructed by players who may be moving down the green in front of them. The first time it happens the umpire would warn the player or team, if the team or player offended again, the last bowl played by that player or team would be declared dead.

Question: If I played 6 games in Division 1 and 5 games in Division 3, have I qualified

to play in both finals? Answer: Yes. You played more than four games in the higher numbered side (Side

1) and played four or more games in a lower numbered side (Side 3). BV Rules for Competition 9.1.8

Slow Play A.5 Controlling Bodies can adopt the following regulations based on a 15 end game being played within a two-and-one-quarter hour time limit. Players must play without undue delay, possession of the rink will belong to the player or team whose bowl is being played. If the umpire on appeal by one of the opponents decides that the player in possession in any way by their opponents, the umpire will warn the offending player. Players who are not in possession of the rink should stand behind the jack and behind the head until their opponents bowl is delivered and comes to rest. Then possession of the rink will be transferred to the opposing player.

Mid-Week Selection Report

Excluding Round 12 on 20 December, four of our Sides are well placed in the four. Side 2 is 4th, Side 3 is 2nd, Side 4 is 4th and Side 6 is on top. The Ladies’ Side and Side 5 are struggling in 7th position and need to be more competitive to finish top five and avoid relegation. Selection this season has been more challenging with a surfeit of players at the beginning of the season resulting in a number of players missing out. This led to members withdrawing their availability. In the meantime rotation was introduced and whilst this has provided games for all, it has created some unrest and we are now struggling for numbers. I would like to thank John Majkut for his contribution to Tuesday pennant and he will be a loss to our Club and a gain for Garfield. Thank you to my fellow Selectors for their time and input.

A GOOD MARKER WON’T MAKE A GOOD GAME

BUT A BAD MARKER MAY JUST RUIN ONE” Quote - Joan Brotherton, International Umpire

THE FOLLOWING TIPS WILL HELP YOU DEVELOP SKILLS YOU NEED TO BE A COMPETENT MARKER

DURING THE GAME

POSITIONING

After the mat has been centred and the jack delivered, centre the jack with your hand (never use your foot).

Don’t hesitate to check a dubious jack length. Have the length checked if necessary. This duty must be exercised with extreme caution and only if there is no doubt in your mind.

Your position on the rink is important for two reasons – you should not obstruct a player’s view of any pegs or indicator’s on the bank and you should also be in a position where you can see and act quickly upon anything that happens in the head.

The ideal position is to stand approximately one metre to the rear of and one metre to the side of the jack.

Try to stand in the same position and side in every end as the players will get used to where you are stand and ensure your shadow does not affect the head.

Do not move when player is on the mat ready to deliver

Remain on the green at all times if possible.

If the jack goes into the ditch, stand to one side of rink (NOT on bank).

COMMUNICATION

Mark with chalk all touchers as soon as they come to rest. Put marks on both sides so that the bowl does not have to be picked up to be checked if moved from its original position. You may need to nominate a toucher and advise the players if you cannot mark it. Remove any marks from non-touchers.

Use the bowl and jack indicators to show position in the ditch. Remove the indicators on completion of end

Try to anticipate questions so that you have the answers ready. When the bowl is on its way up the rink, take a step forward and to the side of the head to check the distances of any key bowls already in the head and which bowls are shot. You will then be ready to answer the next question without having to re-visit the head.

Be as accurate when giving distances. Practice your distances; a bowl is roughly 5.0”, the jack 2½” and be familiar with the length of your foot and stride.

Only answer questions asked by player in possession of the rink.

Only answer the question asked. In general, don’t provide additional information but, use common sense. For example, if asked “Am I holding shot” and the player is holding two shots, respond “Yes, you are holding two” or if asked “Is the bowl jack high” and the bowl is not exactly jack high, tell the player how far short/past jack high it is. If asked “position of the jack”, hold a hand directly above the jack for 1 or 2 secs.

If unsure which is shot bowl, say, “it’s a measure”. Don’t be forced into making a decision if unsure.

Move to the front of the head when a running bowl is delivered you will be in good position to see if the bowl touches the jack as that is the bowl you should be focusing on. If possible advise the adjacent rinks that a running shot is being played.

Beware of a bowl from the neighbouring rink. Always stop a bowl or any other neutral object from a neighbouring rink that’s likely to disturb the head of your rink.

Never move a bowl except for a bowl declared dead.

Do not engage in unnecessary conversation with the players

Do not stop or catch bowls which are about to enter the ditch.

Page 8

Berwick Bowling Club Newsletter

MEASURING If you are asked to measure, don’t measure unless asked to do so by both players. I personally feel that if an umpire is present, they should be used. However, if you do measure the shot, point to the bowl you believe is shot after completing your measure. Do not move the bowl as the players may elect to call for an umpire for confirmation. If you do call an umpire, give them as much information as possible and make them aware of what equipment will be needed.

TIME MANAGEMENT This is important. Do not constantly rush around or hold up players as this can affect their concentration. Practice a routine you can use in every game you mark - you will gain confidence. When the last bowl in an end has come to rest:

Remove any jack/bowl indicators from the bank then move to the front of the head and wait for the players to declare the head.

Confirm with players the number of shots scored and by whom and tell them the running score totals.

Walk quickly to the other end and remove from the green the mat used in the previous end and be ready to check that the mat has been properly positioned and centre the jack.

As the first bowl is delivered, update the score card and update/check that scoreboard is correct.

Do not enter on the scorecard a total score which is higher than that required to determine the winner.

AFTER THE GAME On completion of the game, make sure that both the players check and sign the scorecard before the players leave the vicinity of the rink. Record the time game was completed and hand card to the official on duty. Some events may require the use of shot indicators and you will need to enquire as to the correct procedures required for each particular event.
