IF YOU GO DOWN TO THE WOODS TODAY…

The Orienteering Walking group regularly encounter wildlife on our wanderings into the woods. Herons are quite a common sighting but we were more than a bit surprised recently to come across a woolly mammoth. And we had to be fleet of foot when we encountered a bevy of swans who took a particular fancy to our trouser legs and ankles! John

Paco’s Page Welcome to the December Newsletter.

Editor Wanted This is the last edition from Steve Degnan, our current Editor. I would like to thank Steve on behalf of everyone at West Bridgford U3A for the splendid job he has done making the News-letter colourful and innovative. We wish Steve all the best in his next adventure.

But we now need a new editor and although we have advertised for a couple of months, so far nobody has volunteered to take on the role. I feel disappointed that with over 800 members we cannot find a volunteer. We have a contingency plan for February but I will be honest, if a replacement is not forthcom-ing the reality is that we will not have a Newsletter to publish in future. So come on, someone out there please help us out. We will give you all the support you need to get started. No special expertise is needed. If you know how to send and receive e mails and save documents that’s all the basic skills you need.

Ageing Well The Notts Network Ageing Well Conference at the University of Nottingham. was a big success with over 100 U3A members at-tending from many Notts U3As. We enjoyed keynote speeches on The Psychology of the Older Brain, and on Dementia – Diet & Exercise: Facts & Fiction. Plus three sessions of fifteen differ-ent workshops. We received a lot of positive feedback. I can say that the planning committee will meet again in July 2020 and explore the possibility of doing it all again.

Lucky Winner At our October Open Meeting WBU3A member Jenny got a nice surprise; she was our first lucky hamper winner. We will be giv-ing away a hamper to one randomly chosen attendee at every Open Meeting from now on. So come along to any Open Meet-ing for your free chance to be a lucky winner.

Season’s Greetings On behalf of the Committee may I wish all members of West Bridgford U3A a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

WHAT A BLOOMIN’ LOAD OF OLD RUBBISH!

There’s a lot of it about, everything from toothbrushes to daily contact lens containers in fact. Recycling and reusability has become vitally important and in our small ways we can all make a difference. Within WBU3A we continue to recycle washed plastic bottle tops. See me at any Open Meeting for details.

Crisp Packet recycling is catching on- the bin at Rushcliffe Arena is usually overflowing. Boots now have a recycling container for used water filter cannisters. And for the avid recycler, check out the lady in Julian Road - she will take toothpaste tubes, sil-ver paper, daily contact lenses and much more……

But can you be bovvered? Well try explaining why you can’t be bothered to your grandchildren!

SAILING OFF INTO THE FAR BLUE YONDER

Thursday was our last session for the year. I have been very pleased with the response of the members and we have enjoyed some very good sailing weather . The skills the members have achieved have ena-bled them to sail in their own groups unsupervised.

The instructors we use give their time free and are Notts County Sailing Club members. The club also allow us to use their equipment. A big thank you to all concerned.

The group have asked me to carry on again next year. Please watch out in the New Year for details of next sum-mers’ sailing programme.

New members including com-plete beginners will be made most welcome.

COMPLETELY STONED

Painting stones brightened our day at the Tuesday Painting and Drawing Group. Great ideas in-cluded cheeky animals, mandala patterns, leaves and flowers, birds and trees. But why? For a gift, remembrance, Christmas decora-tions. We loved painting them, and hope you enjoy seeing them. Janet

Last

Orders

Like the drunk who can’t drag himself away from the bar, I’m still here. But I promise you this is definitely my last edition in charge of the Newsletter. Nobody has volun-teered yet to take over the job of editing. That means that someone from the committee will have to step up at short no-tice to produce the February 2020 edition of the Newsletter.

Everybody on the committee already has more than enough to do. WBU3A is heading towards 1,000 members. WBU3A is a charitable trust and every committee member is a trustee . As such they are legally responsible for ensuring that all activities within WBU3A comply with statutory requirements covering charitable status, taxation and accounting, health & safety, da-ta protection, insurance, personal safeguarding, etc.

It’s said that any voluntary body is only five resignations away from extinction. WBU3A only exists because some people vol-unteer to do that bit extra. Some tasks (such as this editor-ship) are enjoyable. Some carry considerable responsibility. Some are just drudgery, but someone has to do them. If you think you can help in any way please speak to the Committee.

Christmas is like Bovril, we love it or hate it. If you’re with your family this year, I hope you have a good ‘un. If like many mil-lions you will spend the holiday alone, or if you are skint, or if you can’t stand the drivel spewed out on telly over the “festive” season, you have my sympathies. Treat yourself to a glass of something warming, and don’t worry - it’ll soon be over!

My Christmas Day includes a Skype video call to my son who lives 15,000 miles away. God Bless Sir Tim Berners - Lee, Bill Gates et al! New technologies enable millions of families to keep in touch across continents via inexpensive and efficient internet connections. Change can be good. Sláinte!

Steve Degnan ex editor.

IF I KNEW YOU WERE COMING...

By popular demand following Janet’s article in our October edi-tion, here is Marguerite Patten’s war time recipe for sponge cake “sans oefs”. Enjoy!

Ingredients:

6 oz self-raising flour with one level teaspoon of baking powder, or 6 oz plain flour with three level teaspoons of baking powder 2.5 oz margarine 2 oz sugar 1 level tablespoon golden syrup A quarter of a pint of milk, or milk and water Jam for filling

Method:

Sift the flour and baking powder. Cream the margarine, sugar and golden syrup until soft and light, add a little flour, then a little liquid. Continue like this until it is a smooth mixture. Grease and flour two 7 inch sandwich tins and divide the mixture between the two. Bake for approximately 20 minutes or until firm to touch, just above the centre of a moderately hot oven. Turn out and sandwich with jam.

CASTLE ROCK AND ROLL

In July a group of us met at the Vat and Fiddle pub which is adjacent to Nottingham’s largest independent Brewery, Castle Rock. We then had a very informative tour of the Brewery.

Afterwards we went into their Visitor Centre Bar (The Gold-ings) for a short talk about some of the ales they produce, fol-lowed by ‘small’ samples of some of their top beers. Harvest Pale – their best seller – being one of them.

I know some of us went home feeling a little bit ‘squiffy’, but a most informative and enjoyable afternoon.

In The Bleak Midwinter

In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, In the bleak midwinter, long ago.

Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him, nor earth sustain; Heaven and earth shall flee away when He comes to reign. In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed The Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ.

Enough for Him, whom cherubim, worship night and day, Breastful of milk, and a mangerful of hay; Enough for Him, whom angels fall before, The ox and ass and camel which adore.

Angels and archangels may have gathered there, Cherubim and seraphim thronged the air; But His mother only, in her maiden bliss, Worshipped the beloved with a kiss.

What can I give Him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb; If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part; Yet what I can I give Him: give my heart.

Christina Rossetti

FAREWELL PLAY READERS

It’s been therapeutic and fun to be part of the Play Reading Group which is now closing. My thanks and best wishes go out to Liz and Trish for their support and to all present and past members of our group. I will so miss our monthly injection of laughter in those few hours together.

West Bridgford U3A would not exist if it wasn’t for all the won-derful members who volunteer in every direction to make our U3A so special. Happy Festivities to you all. Jacky Arnold
