&SenseSUMMER 2020
Heat, Air Conditioning, and Welcoming All~ Charlie Zanayed, CEO/President
Some of the fondest memories I have of my years growing up come from a 900 square
foot second floor apartment that my mom, dad, brother, sister, and I lived in. If I describe my family as “close” growing up, it isn’t just a sentiment; at times we were in close quarters. I vividly remember one particular summer that was exceptionally warm with many days reaching into the high 80s and 90s. As you can imagine, a second floor apartment can get quite a bit warmer than the outside temperature, and I learned that summer that the old adage, “hot air rises” is a fact. The very warm temperatures made sleeping those nights more challenging than it typically is for most of us today. Despite the fact that it was decades ago, I recall my uncle and his family visiting on a particularly warm day and being quite uncomfortable with the fact that we did not have air conditioning. That very day, my uncle went to the local store and bought a window air conditioning unit for my family. I’ll never forget his generosity. ‘Welcome all regardless of wealth’ are the first five words in CoVantage Credit Union’s mission. For us, our mission is not just words we say or put on our website – they guide how we strive to operate your cooperative. One way we take our mission to heart is by providing small dollar loans to members. In 2019, we provided over 6,000 members with a loan of $1,000 or less, and over 15,000 members with loans of $5,000 or less. While some financial institutions balk at doing such small loans and have accountants that explain how these loans are not profitable, we don’t provide them because of profit. The fact is, we know that some members who need to borrow even $25 may need money for food or utilities during a particularly difficult time.
When I think about CoVantage, and the miracle of a credit union that is consistently rated among the best performing and healthiest credit unions nationally with $2.1 billion in assets, more than 120,000 members, headquartered in a town of 8,000, serving many low and moderate income communities in Central and Northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, it’s a remarkable success story made possible by the loyalty of our member-owners. I can’t completely quantify it, but I firmly believe that many of our members know that by banking with CoVantage, they are not only banking with a credit union that provides outstanding value and was ranked number one in the country out of over 5,000 credit unions in member value (as ranked by Callahan and Associates in 2019, Callahan is an independent credit union research company); rather I believe some members bank with CoVantage because they know that by doing so they are providing a means for their cooperative to help provide small dollar loans for things like a window air conditioner. We know today many of our friends, neighbors, and families have lost jobs or have had incomes reduced. These are incredibly difficult times for so many. We know we can’t solve every problem, but CoVantage is grateful for your loyalty which continues to allow your financial cooperative to do incredible good. Thanks to your loyalty, it is fair to say we have assisted thousands of members during our most recent challenges. If you or your family need help, or you’d like to know about some of the ways we’ve provided assistance to member-owners, please go to covantagecu.org/covid19, and you’ll be able to see the resources we’ve made available. Thank you!
