ITU/BDT Arab Regional Workshop on“Wireless Network Evolution”
Muscat, Oman, 03-05 May 2004
PLAN• WIFI Overview.• Applications of RadioLAN Technologies.• Définition of Hot Spot.• Standardization of RadioLAN Technologies.• Tunisian ANF pilot project• Tests & évaluation.• Commercial WiFi applications• Conclusion.
WIFI Overview
• Wireless Local Area Network– Définition:
• Broadband Radio Network for interconnection of personnel data equipments (PC, lapTop, mobile terminal..) using high speed radio links.
– Dénominations :• WLAN : Wireless LAN• RLAN : Radio LAN• RLR: Réseau Local Radio
Applications of RadioLAN Technologies
1. To built new LANs (entreprises, universities, library, private …).
2. To offer connectivity inside public areas, transit areas, .. (Hot Spot).
What’s Hot Spot ?• Hot Spot is the area of coverage of Radio LAN
using the wireless standard 802.11 for Data transmission.
• Hot Spot to offer mobile high speed Data connectivity within the coverage area.
• Hot Spot usually implemented inside aéroports, hôtels, conférences centres, campus universitaires…
RadioLAN Standardisation
Coverage Range comparaison between 2,4GHz & 5GHz bandwidth at 15dBm
Tunisian ANF pilot project
• OBJECTIVES :
• To be in line with CMR-03 recommandations.
• Try WiFi solution for Internet accès : Hot Spot.
• Learn about RadioLAN Technologies
Deployement of the pilot project
• 3 Steps :
1. Technical Study : constraints & performances required .
2. Configuration & installation of équipements.
3. Tests & évaluations.
Technical Study
• Constraints to be observed :
- Data Sécurity- Spatial Constraint : maximum couverage, minimum interférence- Technical Constraint : power connectivity (best place), Ethernet accèss.
Constraint Spatial/Sécurity
Data Sécurity
•Radio transmissions Possibility of interception.
•Solutions : Access contrôl :- Spatial : Coverage Range Mesurement & contrôl. - Access adresses Control.Sécurité protocole : WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy).
Configuration & Installation
– Installation of 2 RadioLANs inside 2 buildings located at 50m (ANF & Ministère des Technologies de la Communication et du Transport).
– Interconnexion of the two buildings using a bridge.
Configuration & Installation(Cd)
– Installation & configuration of a Billing System to charge Internet connexion.
– Installation & configuration of a Network Management System
WiFi Equipements for the pilot project
• Accès Points (5 for ANF building, 4 for Ministère building & 2 for interconnexion of the 2 buildings).
• Switchers (2 inside ANF building).
• Management & Billing system (2 SMB & 1 CMB).
• Portable terminals
Management system (2 SMB & 1 CMB)
• SMB - On Site MultiBox :– Users Authentication– Sessions management – Accounting of connexion time
• CMB - Central MultiBox :– Data base management .– Validation of authentication request of SMBs– SMB’s management

- Tested Signal Power : 15mW, 30mW, 50mW et 100mW.
- Data Speed : up to 5 Mb/s.
- Coverage Range : 15 to 25m.
2- Sécurity Tests :
Intrusion Tests :- at radioLAN level- at serveurs( firewall….) level- at coding level.- at Authentication level.
Sessions management tests
Tests Évaluations (Cd)
3-Operational Tests

• Access Point Management.
• VLAN Management.Network Coverage & handover.
4- Physical Tests– Mobile Terminals Mutuel Accès.
– Connectivity tests between servers : CMB, SMB1,SMB2.
Tests Évaluations (Cd)
Common WiFi Applications• Case of « Hot Spot »
Integrated access service included in the package offered by the area manager (could be free of charge) : Aireport, Railway Station…
example : Wayport Network (USA) for hôtels information.
Common WiFi Applications (Cd)
Access to ISPs
-Payement using credit card or prepaid card….
Mobiles opérators data access service using SIM card for authentication, charging...
Conclusion• WiFi technologies are developping very fast offring
new facilities for terminal mobility.
• Private & Public operators are in compétition sharing this promising market.
• Development of advanced Standards : 802.11b802.11g to get higher speeds & better security.
