Pi Phi Happenings From move-in until final exam week, life at NC Alpha has been a whirlwind of fun and exciting

events!

Life in the Annex We had great interest this year in our cozy spot on Pickard Lane with 19 members living in the Annex. Members of the Executive Board, seniors, and juniors are enjoying their time in “Da Nexx.” House Corporation also renovated the guest bathroom!

Big/Little Reveal! This was perhaps one of the most exciting weeks of the semester! With 46 littles and 57 bigs, co-bigging was inevitable. The new members were spoiled with a week full of gifts. At the end of the week their families were revealed to them. Families and littles dressed up in the same theme to reveal themselves to one another.

Life in the Main House We also had tremendous interest in the main house. Thirty three girls live in the house this year. Many renovations were done to accommodate the increase in girls living in the house, including new furniture in practically every room! Our new House Director Leigh is a joy to have in the house!

Parents Weekend Parents Weekend was packed with fun-filled events! On the night of Friday, September 7th, NC Alpha hosted a parents cocktail event at La Residencia on Rosemary Street. Parents and their daughters danced the night away to the sounds of the Carolina Soul Band. The next morning on Saturday, families were invited to the house for a delicious brunch before heading out to the UNC vs. ECU football game. We are already looking forward to next year!

Roundin’ Up The Phinest

Initiation and Initiation Dinner After passing their New Member tests, we were overjoyed to initiate 46 beautiful new members at the end of October! After initiation, all of our members headed over to the Chi Omega Pumpkin Patch to support the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Once all of our pumpkins were painted, we headed back to the house for a lovely initiation dinner catered by Brixx.

Recruitment this year was a great success! We extended bids to 48 beautiful new members, which was the full new member quoata this year. With the 48 new members, this put our chapter above campus total. How exciting!

After spending the first couple of weeks back practicing in the hot heat of the Carolina summers, we felt more prepared than ever! We kicked off Round 1 with a “Red, White, and Boom Boom” theme. The paper mache balls that filled our ceiling were made to look like fireworks, and, per tradition, the “Boom Boom” cheer was yelled for the potential new members over and over.

“Mean Girls and Spice Girls” was the theme of our skit round. It was a riot! After house tours and preference night, we could not wait to see what girls would be at our house on Bid Day. Our Bid Day theme was Western! We all put on our cowboy boots, jean shorts, and yellow bandanas to welcome home all of the baby angels. We could not be more proud of our new girls!

Panhellenic Spotlights Congrats! We are honored to say that not only do we have a Pi Phi representative on the UNC Panhellenic Council, but we have two! There were no Pi Phis on the UNC Panhellennic Council last year, so this is a great opportunity for us. We are thrilled to be more involved in the Panhellenic community, and we cannot wait to see the great improvements Maryjane

and Courtney will make!

VP of Standards: Maryjane Dowd Maryjane, a junior, applied for the Panhellenic Executive Board to give back to the Greek community. As VP of Standards, Maryjane will educate Panhellenic members of the rules and regulations governing our community. She will also encourage positive behavior that reflects the goals and beliefs of our organizations. We have full confidence that Maryjane will make some great changes for the Panhellenic community!

VP of Campus Outreach: Courtney Sanders Courtney, a junior, has a great vision as the VP of Campus Outreach! This was a new position added to the executive board this past year, so we are excited to see how Courtney will further develop the roles of Campus Outreach. She will oversee campus outreach events and Panhellenic wide philanthropic events, as well as serving as the Panhellenic contact for campus organizations. Courtney has already showed such a great passion for the work she will be doing!

Panhellenic Networking Night

Kim Norcross is pictured above at the Networking Night at Top of the Hill.

Panhellenic Networking Night was an awesome way for Panhellenic women, alumnae, and professionals to connect and network. We want to give a special thanks to the women that represented Pi Beta Phi as professionals in their field:

Kristyl Kepley: Professor of literature and owner of Arbonne

Kim Norcross: Superintendent of Phoenix Academy

Lori Welsh: Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Therapist

Other Pi Phi Happenings Campus Involvement Fair Our VP of Communications hosted our first ever Pi Phi Campus Involvement Fair! Members were asked to represent clubs that they were involved in on campus while other members were invited to walk around and learn about these clubs that they could get involved in. We had a diverse range of clubs: from dance to volunteer work to campus publications and more!

Homecoming Alumnae Brunch This past November we had a Homecoming Alumnae Brunch, a tradition brought back from three years ago. Before the homecoming football game against UVA, alumnae were invited over to the house for a small brunch. It was a ball catching up with them and showing them the new improvements around the house!

Scholarship Dinner Our annual Scholarship Dinner is a great way for chapter members to further connect with their professors outside of the classroom. Professors were personally invited to join us at our house for a delectable dinner prepared by our chef and an inspiring speech by our Student Body President Christy Lambden. It is always an honor for us to build these university connections through this opportunity!

State Fair In the fall we continued our annual tradition of going to the North Carolina State Fair together. This is definitely one of the chapter’s favorite events! Many of the girls went on some of the classic rides, such as the Ferris Wheel, but everyone tried the strangely delicious fair food! Pi Phis could be seen eating deep fried cookie dough and Oreos, turkey legs, fresh ice cream, corn on the cob, and more! I hope your mouth isn’t watering too much!

Eve Carson Memorial 5k for Education

1

Pi Beta Phi and Phi Delta Theta hosted our 6th annual Eve Carson Memorial 5k for Education on Saturday, November 16th at 9a.m. Our 5k still remains the largest 5k in Chapel Hill history!

The Eve Carson Memorial 5K for Education honors the legacy of outstanding leadership and community service that former UNC student body president Eve Marie Carson left after her life was tragically cut short. Ms. Carson was a beloved Tar Heel who possessed a passion for the University and its students.

Pi Beta Phi and Phi Delta Theta work

together every year in November to honor Eve and raise money for education. This year the proceeds from the 5K will go to the Eve Carson Memorial Scholarship, Pi Beta Phi Literacy Fund, and CEO 4 Teens.

About two weeks before the 5k started, we

had additional fundraising through our “5 Days for the 5k” events. Four local restaurants had

2

benefit days for the 5k, and then the day before the 5k we hosted a pasta dinner at the Phi Delt house.

This year we also started a Facebook campaign where members made their profile picture a photo of them with an Eve Carson quote photoshopped on top. Here’s an example of one of these pictures:

Race day was a huge success. We raised over

$56,000! That’s $4,000 more than last year!
