What Is Senior University?Senior University WSU is a program of the Winona State University Retiree Center. Senior University is a peer-led set of short courses

taught by professor emeriti, WSU faculty, and topic experts to provide intellectual and cultural stimulation and growth, thus providing opportunities for lifelong learning and leadership,

combined with the fellowship of peers sharing a common quest for continued growth.

Non-credit classes, one day a week during a 4-6 week term, no tests, no grades.

Senior University is open to retirees and community adult learners.

Increasing Health through Exercise and Nutrition

It is never too late to get healthy! This course will give you the tools to maintain a fitness and wellness plan to enhance your overall health. Instructors and exercise science students will customize a wellness plan for each participant by performing a baseline fitness assessment, help set and implement individual nutrition and physi-cal fitness goals, and educate participants on the benefits of exercise and proper nutrition for overall health and disease prevention. Don’tmiss this great opportunity to take charge of your fitness and overallwellness. (A physician’s clearance and signed release form will berequired prior to the first class period. Justin Geijer is a faculty member in the Health, Exercise, and Rehabilitative Sciences Department. Justin earned his PhD in Exercise Physiology from the University of Minnesota. Additionally, he has over 10 years of experience as a certified personal trainer.

Kent Hansen is an assistant professor in the Health, Exercise, and Rehabilitative Sciences Department. Kent earned his PhD in Nutritional Science from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. He enjoys taking the time to help people become aware of strategies to become healthier involving both exercise and nutrition.

Art History “Isms”Instructor: Nicole Chamberlain-DupreeDay: WednesdayTime: 1:00-2:30 p.m.Sessions: September 6, 13, 20, 27, October 4, 11Location: MN Marine Art Museum – 800 Riverview Dr.Course Fee: $40.00

This course will introduce participants to the periods and artists that form the basis of Western Art History. Students will study some of the masterpieces known the world over, some of which are on exhibit at the MN Marine Art Museum. The course will be taught at MMAM and will cover the following “isms”: Italian Renaissance and Man-nerism, Italian Baroque, Classicism to Neo Classicism, Romanticism, Academicism, and Realism.

Nicole Chamberlain-Dupree is the Executive Director of the Minnesota Marine Art Museum and a big fan of art and art history. She has a Master’s degree in Art History and enjoys sharing what she knows and learns.

The Economics of Climate ChangeInstructor: Matt HyleDay: MondayTime: 3:00-4:30 p.m.Location: Maxwell Hall, Room 257Sessions: eptember 11, 18Course Fee: $40.00

Climate change is a hot topic. This course explores the likely eco-nomic consequences of climate change and the economics of possible policies dealing with climate change. Topics include: is the demand for clean energy the cause of the demise of the US coal industry? Can we expect economic markets to work naturally to mitigate climate changes? Can we harness the markets to combat effectively the effects of climate change? And, what are the econom-ic consequences for future generations of various policy responses?

Dr. Matt Hyle has a PhD in Economics with Environmental Econom-ics as one of his fields. He has taught a course in Environmental and Natural Resource Economics for over 15 years at WSU.

The Aging Brain and StrokeInstructor: Richard DeyoDay: ThursdayTime: 2:00-3:30 p.m.Sessions: October 5, 12, 19, 26, November 2Location: Phelps Hall, Room 210Course Fee: $40.00

This course will briefly discuss the neuroscience of the aging brain and then dive into an introduction to the current scientific under-standing of strokes. These discussions will include prevention and risk factors, warning signs, treatments and outcomes.

Dr. Richard Deyo has over thirty years of post-doctoral research ex-perience in the area of the neuroscience of aging. This includes con-ducting research to obtain FDA approval for Bayer AG’s stroke drug NIMOTOP (nimodipine) while a post-doctoral fellow at the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University, Chicago, IL. While at WSU, he has obtained patents for two additional compounds while working in collaboration with other drug companies.

Marcel Pagnol: Novelist, Playwright and Filmmaker

Take a virtual tour of Provence (in Southern France) as you learn about the prolific writer and film director Marcel Pagnol. Read and discuss several of his books (in English translation), watch excerpts from his films, and watch modern films based on his screenplays and novels.

Jeanine Black holds master’s degrees in French and English from the University of Kansas and Georgetown University and studied at the Université de Dijon and Université de Genève. She has taught French as an adjunct faculty member of the WSU Global Studies and World Languages department. In addition to teaching French and English at the university level in the U.S., she has taught English at several language schools in France.

Digging Deeper: Intermediate and Advanced Genealogical Research

Instructor: Janis MartinDay: TuesdayTime: 1:00-3:00 p.m.Sessions: October 31, November 7, 14, 21Location: Maxwell Hall, Room 160Course Fee: $40.00

Looking beyond the basics, this genealogy course will challenge the researcher to employ critical thinking skills while exploring documents online and in repositories. Topics will include mapping and location identification, legal records, military records, and a first look at DNA as a scientific resource for determining relation-ships. This course is geared to those who have at least an intermedi-ate level of genealogical experience.

Janis Martin is an experienced genealogical researcher who has presented at the Southern CA Genealogical Jamboree, MN Genealogical Society North Star Conference, and the Olmsted County Historical Society. She has taught genealogy at all skill levels for continuing education in southeast MN. Janis is also the director of Unclaimed Persons, a national volunteer organization that assists coroners and medical examiners in locating next-of-kin for the deceased using genealogical skills.
