Windows Azure TechEd India Keynote

Thank you for coming.There is a big change that you’re living through right now. Some of you may recall a time when having a phone or a PC was a big deal. Then there was client – server computing and smartphones more recentlyWe are in the early stages of the Cloud Platform revolution and I am here to tell you why you should bet on Windows Azure for this revolution.

• First and foremost, we have a lot of experience running huge cloud services. You are betting on a very experienced company.

• Look at those numbers. These are services built at a huge scale.

• We have dozens of data centers and I have 3 examples up here from different continents. Power is what defines a data center’s viability and you can see that we are powering these DCs from a variety of renewable resources.

Windows Azure Platform Momentum

•This is just a small sample of customers who are adopting, partnering with or supporting windows azure•Why are customers adopting Windows Azure in such

large numbers? There are some very simple reasons. There are basically 5 reasons and I will walk you through the customer stories of a few customers for each area. Each of these stories are fascinating and you can actually go and use many of these services on the web.

Why does Windows Azure have such rapid adoption

• Let us look at some examples of how customers are saving on their costs.

Florida Census

• Talk about how important Florida is for US elections.

• Governments across the world are dealing with recession and dropoff in tax revenue. They need to do more with less. The census is a classic situation that happens infrequently and we can help governments save money by having them adopt Windows Azure as their platform. That said, it isn’t just big IT shops who can benefit. Let’s look at smaller companies

Arzeda• The last thing a non IT company wants is to

worry about their IT platform. They want to focus on their solution – app, service or in this case the enyzmes and drugs they are creating

Guppers

• Here is a startup that can get started without having to worry about buying computers, reserving data center space, figuring out how much power they want. Plus they have a better chance of predicting what their business model should be – how much their expenses will be down the road.

iStore• Enterprise focused company that took

advantage of all the same abilities and adopted Windows azure for an oilfield solution and saved up to 90% for some of their customers

Origin Digital

• An accenture company that does video transcoding saw a big drop in costs.

Quest Software

• IT management solutions from an early mover (QUEST) is the beginning of an important new trend. All the top management toolsets will be available as hosted services and often because of cost reasons, IT management for the intranet may be done as a SaaS on a cloud platform. Here, a sw company is able to take advantage of that trend without worrying about upfront HW costs.

Microsoft• Finally, a Microsoft example --- the games

team at Microsoft developed a game services platform to help game developers build games easily and this was incredibly cost effective for them. There are examples of teams that failed because of these upfront costs in the past. Spaces.msn.com was growing astronomically and then hit a brick wall. Then myspace took over and the team never recovered.

Windows Azure Saves you money because:Service Capex

• HW – compute, storage and networking expenditure.

• Talk about how we do the work to manage commodity servers – in storage and compute

• This is not just about peak production hardware needs but also peak testing needs. If you want to move fast, you want to be able to quickly bring on new test and integration environments as needed.

Windows Azure Saves you money because:Service Opex

• Ops people cost money.• You have to manage hardware – what happens

when it goes bad and needs to be diagnosed and replaced?

• How do you manage networking infrastructure? Local conditions demand local staff and local solutions.

• Replacing old hardware and capacity management takes intelligent ops decisions and this costs money.

So...

• Massive adoption by teams within Microsoft really helping Microsoft drop costs.

• Let’s move on to the next advantage of Windows Azure

• It is just cheaper and easier to manage services on top of Windows Azure

City of Miami: Video

• This is a cool service that allows the city to be more responsive to its citizens and at a lower cost. The theme here is that you can get more done with less, which is what taxpayers are asking all around the world today. An interesting backstory here is that the Mayor of the City of Miami was recalled a few days ago because citizens thought they had not done a good job managing costs – perhaps they should have adopted azure a whole lot more aggressively?

3M

• With 75,000 employees and operations in more than 60 countries, 3M develops an extensive range of consumer and industrial products. Well-known 3M brands include Scotch, Post-it, Thinsulate, and Scotch-Brite.

• Fantastically valuable site. If you are building a web site on a budget, go check this site out. How does a company with no record of providing services for web site developers justify a high ongoing cost for a fantastically innovative & refreshingly new and hence unproved service in a new area? By keeping costs low before and after launch

Datacastle

• We are seeing a lot of customers use our services to provide backup and recovery. Basically, tape based backup is dead and that huge multi-billion dollar industry is moving to the cloud. It can actually be cheaper to store the data in the cloud AND easier to recover compared to tape based backup. And we provide geo replication to handle large scale natural disasters.

•The venture-backed, private software company is based in Seattle, Washington.

TicketDirect

• A big events tickets provider in NZ. They can put their scarce resources to work on what really matters. (Flip through this and the next one quickly.)

OCCMundial.comA couple of examples of companies that moved just part of their infrastructure on to Windows Azure and had wins.After evaluating Google and Amazon solutions, OCCMundial.com used Windows Azure™ to host OCCMatch

Autoplaza.com.mx

• Got this win just by storing content for the web site (images for example) on Windows Azure

Siemens• This is a company whose job it is to run IT infrastructures

and look at how much they think they can save. Even if these estimates are off, there is plenty to gain. Now, not everything in an IT environment will move overnight but you can do new apps here and move things as you get comfortable.

• Siemens is a global powerhouse in electronics and electrical engineering, operating in the industry, energy, and healthcare sectors. The company has around 410,000 employees, and a worldwide reputation for innovation and achievement.

Windows Azure improves Manageability because:

• Managing hardware takes tools, people and experience. It is hard to do.

Microsoft is betting on Windows Azure because it makes Managing Services easier and so:

• My team runs several services on Windows Azure too and we have even better ratios

Why does Windows Azure have such rapid adoption: Within Microsoft & with Customers

• On demand scalability is implicitly important in a lot of the examples we already discussed but in some areas, it is THE core reason for switching aggressively to a cloud platform. Let me start off with High Performance Computing. We have an offering in the market today that lets you take our on-premise HPC offering and use it to burst out into the cloud. Here are a couple of more examples

Baker Hughes

• This is a huge company with 50K employees in 90 countries in the oil services industry.

• Baker Hughes wanted to augment its high-performance computing clusters in an effort to calculate complex simulations more quickly. To do so, while avoiding costly on-premises infrastructure additions, the company implemented the Windows Azure™ platform.

• High Performance computing scenarios are hungry for more computing & storage resources. The number there is astounding – 9 months to less than 30 days!

InterGrid

• And this is a startup that is taking advantage of the same benefits of on demand scalability. Again, size – at either end of the spectrum is no barrier.

• Based in New Zealand, InterGrid has 14 employees.

Lokad• Lokad is a comparitively small

company from France and they can compete with the biggest companies now using Windows Azure.

RiskMetrics Group

Most of the hedge funds in the world use this company. The amount of money they model is insane. Financial services industry is a big adopter of cloud computing. They could experiment with new business models solely because of Windows Azure. Headquartered in New York, RiskMetrics has more than 1,100 employees operating in 13 countries.

Advanced TelemetryProvides retail locations with the ability to monitor energy consumption. Can now hope to expand its market without worrying about scale issues. Can hope to amass enough customers to make it possible to deal with power companies to help shed load – not easy or even possible for a startup to aspire to this kind of scale.

The company employees 22 people at its San Diego, California office. Its flagship product is the EcoView energy management system, including the EcoView Web online interface.

KIA Motors

• Simple problem – how much hardware should they buy and install for a superbowl campaign? Answer: none

• Kia Motors America is the U.S. marketing and distribution arm of Kia Motors Corporation, which is based in Seoul, South Korea.

Aer Lingus

• Very cool example of a consumer focused innovative app that drives customer satisfaction.• Added new functionality and lots

of new users because of that new functionality and they’re OK

Sobees

• Another example of a company that had to deal with a spurt due to good publicity

Outback Steakhouse

• Another way that you can have a spurt of customers is via the word spreading through social media. In such situations, it is really valuable to have access to on demand resources for bursts are sites that are trying to ride on social networks. You never know when there can be a big burst. It had more than 1M fans when I last looked. How easy is it for a restaurant chain to build a site with 1M connections without cloud platforms?

• Another social networking idea – let people choose what is fashionable and who should model it and create products that are sold to the people who fancy something and voted for it.

Windows Azure helps you scale up on demand because:

• Capacity modeling is very hard and most systems are underutilized and the only thing worse than that is to be over utilized! Demand signals are too late to react if you want to build out new DC space.

Windows Azure helps you scale up on demand because

• Utilization levels are incredibly low in most environments. It is just dangerous to utilize too much since you then have no buffer

• Hard to predict based on betas

Microsoft is betting on Windows Azure for its on demand scale & So..

• Bing maps embraced Windows Azure and got a huge perf win because of CDN.

• Other MSN and Office services with bursty traffic are also embracing WA.

• If you are not agile, your competitors will be and they will eat you

Acumatica• Acumatica has 30 employees located

across the globe & does web based ERP and accounting software

• Extend current app with a service.• There are many such examples where our

customers have rapidly launched and are experimenting with new services.

ESRI– Opens up new services/markets.– Beautiful App. Classic example of

something that would just not have happened without Windows Azure. Check it out on DataMarket today.

– Based in California, Esri has 2,700 employees and annual revenue of more than U.S.$776 million.

Intuit

• Pretty much every US tax payer and small biz owner has used Intuit’s Quicken and Turbo tax sw.

– The financial software company has approximately 7,800 employees with major offices in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

GXS

• Here is a large worldwide company that added on new analytics services quickly – would have been long drawn and expensive with Windows Azure.

Associated Press

• Half the world’s population depend on AP for news. This business is inherently bursty and they want to make it even more unpredictable by allowing apps to hook into their feed. Who did they turn to – Windows Azure of course.

Tmobile Video

• Here is a family focused app for Windows phone and they couldn’t have moved fast enough without Windows Azure. • Let’s hear directly from the

customer.

Windows Azure improves your Agility because:

• There are so many things that you don’t have to worry about.

Microsoft is betting on Windows Azure because it provides agility and so:

• The agility with which we release services has gone up hugely

• Do you and your customers trust Microsoft?• Clearly a lot of sensitive industries

Margin Pro

• A company that helps financial companies which are notoriously sensitive about confidentiality

StorSimple

• Another storage solutions company. Companies – large and small are trusting us with their data – they trust our DCs and they trust that if they want to keep their data in house in the future, we can and will allow it. Wait for more on this.

You Can Trust Windows Azure because:

• Datacenters have a lot of certifications and we are beginning on this journey with Windows Azure and it is a high priority for us.

• There is one more important reason for you to depend on Windows Azure to provide the most trustworthy and customized solution.
