Wilco’s legacy wireless solution included smartphones for its management team and rugged mobile phones operating on a push-to-talk cellular network. But employees were experiencing ongoing signal issues with their legacy network, and the push-to-talk service sometimes led to confusion and miscommunication as workers missed radio messages. Alongside reliable, rugged voice service, Wilco needed to more efficiently and effectively capture, share and communicate data wirelessly and in real time. They needed a solution able to deal with the vast amounts of information—including email, technical plans and operations management systems—they shared in the field. THE SOLUTION Wilco chose to upgrade their wireless communications network to Rogers powerful 4G high speed wireless network. This mobile broadband solution delivers high-speed data connectivity on many kinds of devices. Nearly 200 field workers began using Samsung Rugby™ phones—devices rugged enough for outdoor construction sites, in all kinds of weather. Site foremen and superintendents switched to laptops with Rocket™ mobile internet sticks for broadband connectivity. And temporary site offices were equipped with Rocket™ hubs, so that multiple site visitors, project managers and other employees could simultaneously and securely access data on their smartphones, laptops and tablets. The management team also began using iPhones® and iPads® to access the company’s HisTREE.net™ asset tracking and management system. This mobile app allowed them to view asset details, pull up performed tasks, upload photos and comments, and locate specific assets, such as trees, park furniture and fire hydrants.
