Re-engineering You – Transitioning from Technical Expert to Successful LeaderLeaders within the engineering field face a unique set of challenges when compared with most other professions. Engineering leaders must balance an expertise in technical skills and knowledge allongside a leadership aptitude, that allows for teams and organisations to be led to success. Thriving in an increasingly dynamic, diverse and complex work environment requires the emerging engineering leader to proficiently balance and develop technical expertise while driving high performance and productivity across your team.

Building high performance teams requires an array of leadership capabilities. A background in engineering has already developed many valuable skills which can be identified, refined and transferred into strong leadership traits. Successfully applying the traits learnt from a background in engineering produces a highly capable, innovative, and outcomes-driven leader.

This practical workshop is designed for existing and emerging leaders seeking to sharpen their leadership edge. You will develop, refine and capitalise on the strengths honed from your engineering career and enhance your effectiveness as a leader.

Refining Technical Skills into Leadership Strengths

• Understanding the value that an engineering background brings to leadership

• Identifying and maximising your strengths

• Enhancing your Emotional Intelligence

• Translating a developed capacity for deep-level thinking, impeccable mind for details, and passion for solving interesting problems into leadership proficiencies

• Sponsorship, mentoring and coaching – when, why and how to use them

• Diagnosing areas for improvement, and developing a personal action plan

Maximising Team Performance, Engagement and Aptitude

• Enriching performance through increased Emotional Intelligence

• Creating a positive culture of engagement and success

• Building an effective team

• Implementing tools and processes to unleash your team’s potential

• Refining workplace relations with your fellow leaders and peers

Expert Facilitator: Carol Fink Executive Coach and Chief Growth Officer Growth Spurtz Inc. Leaders of today lead in a state of constant flux – continual change is introduced into the operating model by both internal and external forces. Carol believes that successful organisational transformation comes through simultaneously investing in personal growth and fostering a culture of personal accountability. This investment and accountability applies to both employees and leaders.

An executive coach with thirty years of personal knowledge and experience in maintaining female authenticity while successfully navigating leadership challenges in heavy industry and male dominated cultures, Carol partners with leaders who are ready to kick-start themselves and their teams to accelerate positive transformation in their organisations. Emerging leaders who are already successful in their depth of knowledge as engineering, information technology and heath professionals. And, seasoned leaders who want to leave a positive legacy.

Possessing a calm strength of presence and an equally analytic and intuitive mind, Carol leverage’s her gift of multi-dimensional observation and her appetite for growth, to understand, appreciate, be strategic and incite positive transformation in the leaders she coaches.

9.00 - 9.35 OPENING KEYNOTE CASE STUDY“By remaining open to opportunities and working with them, I was able to get to where I wanted to be”As the ninth woman to be awarded an Honorary Fellowship by Engineers Australia, Kathy began her career as a chemical engineer. Kathy has held leadership and executive roles in oil refining, logistics, exploration and production throughout her international career with BP. She is now a member of a number of high profile boards and non-profit organisations, and is passionate about fostering the next generation of female leaders. 9.50 - 10.25 CASE STUDY “The Confidence Game – Are you a player, a benchwarmer, or both?”Confidence is critical for achieving leadership excellence in any sector, but particularly within the male-dominated engineering sector. It is important to both appear and be confident in order to gain presence, respect from your team and be noticed as a credible candidate for career progression. However, societal expectations about women’s behaviour means their margin for error in projecting the right degree of confidence can be very narrow. In this session, Katie will discuss:• Her own leadership journey• Confidence in the context of gender specific leadership• Navigating (and enlarging) the acceptable bandwith for female leadership behaviours

Katie Whittle General Manager New Opportunities (Strategy and New Business) Arrow Energy

10.25 - 10.40 Questions and Discussion

10.40 - 10.55 Morning Tea

10.55 - 11.30 CASE STUDY “Create your own mini-milestones”With the benefit of hindsight, it is easy to identify the particular stepping stones which have carved a leadership

journey. Opportunities for progression can be derived from a multitude of forms, some not appearing particularly significant at first, but later reflected upon as a defining moment. As the winner of the Aviation / Aerospace Australia 2014 “Outstanding Performance in Engineering and Technology” award, Kathleen understands how small opportunities and milestones can considerably contribute to the larger picture. In this session, Kathleen will discuss:• Seizing opportunities capable of driving career advancement• Creating your own mini-milestones• Personal insights from her own leadership journey

Kathleen Boseley MRH Systems Deputy Chief Engineer (Sustainment), Head of Design Airbus Group Australia Pacific

11.30 - 11.45 Questions and Discussion

11.45 - 12.15 CASE STUDY “Develop resilience for a rewarding career”The engineering field is a typically male-dominated sphere, but offers a career path that is both challenging and rewarding for all, especially women. In all careers that have complex problems and challenging targets it is critical for leaders to possess the ability to ‘bounce back’ from adversity, learn from experience, and remain optimistic. Eva understands how building resilience can be the key to an inspiring career. She will discuss:• The importance of being a resilient leader• Tools to build greater resilience• Bouncing back from adversity to become a stronger leader

Eva Wood Director of Operations - Transport (Northern) Jacobs

12.15 - 12.30 Questions and Discussion

12.30 - 1.30 Networking Lunch

1.30 - 2.30 INTERACTIVE PANEL DISCUSSION“Build a positive workplace culture to unlock and enhance female potential”While many organisations are promoting gender diversity, engineering remains a typically masculine space. In order to maximise female potential in the engineering field, it is important to challenge the prevalent unconscious bias, and to build a positive workplace culture that recognises the benefits gained from diversity. Shifting an engrained culture to facilitate female progression requires hard work and time, but certain measures can be taken to accelerate this process. This panel will explore:• Navigating an industry with entrenched perceptions• Challenging and remoulding an unconscious bias• Strategies to reinforce a positive culture that facilitates female success

ABOUT THE EVENTDespite numerous gender diversity initiatives within organisations, women continue to be significantly under-represented in the engineering profession. While an increasing number of women are choosing engineering as a career, their representation at a leadership level is considerably lower than in many other professions. A multitude of diverse factors contribute towards this severe gender disparity in the sector, evidenced by the variety of issues impacting women’s entry into and success in the industry. In order for women to be successful in the engineering field, they must learn to navigate the complex environment, overcome common career challenges and develop their leadership skills.

The Women in Engineering Leadership Summit 2015 will address the unique challenges that women face in the engineering profession and will provide both practical and proven strategies to overcome obstacles in order to facilitate leadership excellence. Inspirational and successful women, with backgrounds in engineering, from across industries will share their stories of their own defining moments, and will offer critical advice to attain success for current and emerging leaders. Register your team early to be a part of this engaging conversation!
