Page 8: WI Courses Guide 2014

SPIRITUAL LIFEThe weekly campus chapel, the Gathering, is a unique opportunity each week to come together, to be refreshed by God’s Word, and to encourage people to honour Christ in the midst of their studies. Led by our Chaplain, Dr Mark Stephens, and a team of student leaders, it features creative presentations, worship and talks from Wesley Institute faculty members and guest speakers.

Each School also has specific student chapels to foster a culture of learning and community.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIESThroughout the year, the Institute hosts many social events for students. Beginning with an After-Party at Orientation, we hope you see instantly why the Wesley Institute community is so inviting! During semester, look forward to activities run by the student council, including college-wide events and social nights, BBQs and volleyball games. You won’t want to miss the Student Retreat held every year, where students are challenged by a diverse range of local and international speakers to grow and develop individually and as a community. And after all the hard work, celebrate the completion of another successful year with our End of Year Dinner!

STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Representative Council (SRC) is an elected body

representing students’ interests and promoting activities that benefit the Institute’s community. Students in each discipline, including international students, elect two student representatives who will work closely with their respective Head of Schools to articulate and implement a vision for enhancing student well being.

Student representatives also assist Wesley Institute leadership with activities to develop leadership skills, provide moral and spiritual direction for the student body, and support the mission, vision and values of the Institute.

Page 9: WI Courses Guide 2014

STUDENT LEADERSIn your first couple of days at Wesley Institute, you’ll be introduced to some people you’ll see around a lot: the Wesley Institute Buddies (WIBs). Affectionately known as ‘Wibblies’, these student leaders are available to answer questions, point you to the right building or lecture, recommend the best local coffee and food, and help you get connected into the academic and social life of the Institute. Most of the Wibblies clear their calendars for the Orientation After-Party and often can be found hanging out in the Student Centre or elsewhere. Feel free to say hello – you’ll get an enthusiastic greeting back!

28 I Why Wesley Institute?

At Wesley Institute, education is about more than finishing course requirements in order to ‘make a living’. We are here to help graduates embark on an exciting journey of lifelong learning. All courses equip students with the university-level education and qualifications necessary to express their passions while benefiting and blessing this world and the people in it through influential vocations. Graduates of the Institute are resilient and influential contributors to their communities, the nation and the world.

Christian EducationChristian education facilitates a holistic approach to learning, incorporating different aspects of who we are: the outer world of disciplines, academia and practical skills, as well as the inner world of values, beliefs and the soul.

Each degree at Wesley Institute is underpinned by, and aligned to, the Institute’s unique mission to benefit our community as we equip people for Christian life and leadership in a range of influential vocations.

Our vision for Christian education is to see staff and students transformed by the grace and life of Jesus Christ, developing an understanding of their part in the Christian narrative. Education from a Christian worldview offers a perspective from which to see and interpret the world, and one’s place and calling in it, based on a Biblical foundation.

Students are supported and encouraged to flourish personally and spiritually, while pursuing their academic and artistic endeavors.

Undergraduate Courses

The Integrative Studies Units within our Dance, Drama, Graphic Design and Music degrees offer students an overview of the Old and New Testament, in order to understand central stories and themes, and to explore how the Biblical narrative affects their discipline/art. It also helps students understand the question of worldview and the nature of the Christian worldview, enabling them to explore and develop their own lens for seeing and interpreting the world.

Postgraduate Courses

Our postgraduate courses in Counselling, Education, Religious Education and Leadership and Applied Ethics are taught from a distinctly Christian perspective, with a Biblical worldview integrated into each subject.
