#WhyWait Invent-Off

QUALCOMM’S #WHYWAIT MESSAGE

The future isn’t just around the corner. It’s here. With endless curiosity and a relentless work ethic, we bring the future closer every day. We spend our time inventing the technologies and advancing the industries that will define generations to come. These are the technologies of the future, today

Qualcomm is putting out a large advertising effort around the #WhyWait idea. This program, the #WhyWait Invent-Off, is not meant to sell a particular product, be sell-y or even feel like advertising.

The goal of the competition is to create conversation around where technology is headed and the potential it holds.

THE #WHYWAIT INVENT-OFF DETAILS

» There will be two teams, each made up of an engineer, an engineering major, an artist and a high school student.

» Each team will be challenged to invent something that uses these three elements: » Use Qualcomm connectivity (either the Qualcomm GT202 Wi-Fi for Arduino, or the Arduino YUN with integrated Qualcomm Wi-Fi) » Communicate with a Snapdragon device. » Use Alljoyn software to communicate.

» The teams will be provided a “pantry” full of everything they need to build their invention. » It will live as a 6 episode web series » Hosted on Qualcomm.com and Gizmodo. » Episodes will be approximately 2-3 minutes.

» We’ll make it possible for a greater audience to participate via social media. They’ll be able to do things like: » Provide technical help, like coding, or engineering tips » Give the teams a life-line » Add a new technical requirement

» A Host will encourage and challenge the teams and help explain the technology and their ideas to the audience.

» A panel of judges, made up of engineers, tech bloggers and makers will determine the winner.

» The winners will be awarded a yet-to-be- determined prize. (It’ll be awesome.)

While many of Qualcomm inventions and breakthroughs reside “under the hood” of consumer electronics, they have transformed the world in a big way. They have created new opportunities for mobile ecosystem players—the wireless device makers, the operators, the developers and the content creators of the world. And more recently, their inventions and breakthroughs have inspired fresh, new ideas from those companies new to the wireless space.

Qualcomm and DDB are working in conjunction to develop a web series featuring a competition between two teams made up of various technology backgrounds (e.g., engineers, artists, software developers, and students). The dates for the shoot are June 22-24 and July 27-29. These will be full day shoots, and you will need to be on location for those days. We will be shooting somewhere in the New York City Metro area. The teams will be challenged to invent something that uses these three requirements: 1) An Arduino Yún with an integrated Qualcomm wifi chip, 2) Communication with an Android device with a SnapDragon processor, and 3) Use of Alljoyn JS Software. Their progress will be documented across 6 episodes and be available to view on Gizmodo. At the end of the competition, three judges will awardo one team the winner of the Grand Prize (details of the prize are still being worked out). All competitors will be paid for their participation. Juniors and Seniors in the Software Engineering, Mechatronics and Robotics, Electrical Engineering, and Industrial Design majors can apply for this interesting opportunity. Applicants must be available for a preliminary phone interview (June 2nd – 5th) and a second more in-depth phone or video chat interview (June 8th to 12th). Applicants who have been selected for an interview will be notified by Mr. Guttormsson.
