Topic: Why are some service providers better than others?

Services refers to the sale and delivery of an intangible product, between aproducer and consumer. services takes place between a producer andconsumer that are, in legal terms, based in different countries, or economies.

Services can be described as the following types:

    Cross border trade, which is defined as delivery of a service from theterritory of one country into the territory of other country;

    Consumption abroad - this mode covers supply of a service of onecountry to the service consumer of any other country;

Commercial presence - which covers services provided by a servicesupplier of one country in the territory of any other country, and

Presence of natural persons - which covers services provided by aservice supplier of one country through the presence of natural persons in

the territory of any other country.

Now days it is accepted that consumer is the king. All the business aim atproviding the services to its consumersTalking to others is a very good way tobuilding out a vision of tomorrow. One needs to have a base set of ideas fordiscussion. Beyond that, finding what different people react to and how can helpsharpen the vision. There isn?t much to worry about other people ?copying?one?s ideas. If it is that simple, then one better be thinking something different!Talking to people also helps distill out the message much better rather thanplaying around with it in one?s own mind.

Thinking is easier said than done. To think means to be able to drill deep downand figure out from first principles the key tenets of the vision. This requires goingbeyond the superficial and in our world of interruptions, this can be hard to do.

One has to experiment and try out new technologies ? early. This gives aglimpse of tomorrow?s world. There will be some pain and even some glitches. But the trajectory of innovation will ensure that things become faster, better andcheaper. That future world is what one has to build for.

Going to different places is a great way to learn. Free from the physicallimitations of the office, the mind starts to wander free. Seeing how people do

things in other places and putting oneself in different scenarios can be veryeducative.

Every organization aims at providing better services to the customers keeping inmind the requirements, needs of the customers. Therefore the above mentionedpoints should be kept in mind in order to provide good customers services.

With the use of e-commerce techniques several organizations aim at providingbetter services to it's customers. One of the main requirements in e-commerce isthe ability to accept a form of electronic payment. This form of electronic paymentis referred to as financial electronic data interchange (FEDI). Over the years, credit cards have become one of the most common forms of payment for e-

    commerce transactions.

Switching over to the consumer preferences regarding the restaurants, franchises like McDonald's has opened up about 50 restaurants in India since1996 with an investment of about 450 crores .With the aim of providing betterservices McDonald's aim at investing about 750 crores by 2003.The betterservices provided by McDonald's and KFC has inclined the preferences of thecustomers towards them rather than the restaurants.

However majority of the population doesn't prefer these franchises as they arestill restricted to the restaurants and motels in their respective areas.

The emerging mall culture has also changed the scenario of the customers inthe market.People have become trend conscious and they prefer to shop in mallsbecause of the better services provided under one roof. However the populationresiding in the rural areas and some of the people in the urban areas also don'tprefer malls. They are still dependent on the retailers and wholesalers as theyconsider the services provided to them better than those in the malls.

Now days the customers also prefer online shopping. For examplePayPal is ane-commerce business allowing payments and moneytransfers to be madethrough the internet. It serves as an electronic alternative to traditional paper

methods such as checks and money orders. PayPal performs paymentprocessing for online vendors, auction sites, and othercorporate users, for whichit charges a fee. In October 2002, Paypal became a wholly owned subsidiary ofeBay.

According to PayPal's little-updated "About Us" webpage [9], "PayPal hasreceived close to 20 awards for technical excellence from the internet industryand the business community at large - most recently the 2003 Webby Award forBest Finance Site and the 2003 Webby People's Voice Award for Best FinanceSite."

They have won awards since, notably the "Best Finance Services Site" and"People's Voice Award" at the 2006 Webby Awards [10]. There are various othercompanies like best buy, baazi etc.,but pay pal aims and guarantee the pay backof money if the service is not delivered. The PayPal Buyer Protection Policyclaims that customers may file a buyer complaint if they did not receive an itemor if the item they purchased was not as described. If the buyer used a creditcard, they might get a refund via chargeback from their credit card company.

While discussing about the services provided by the IT industry, nameof the company that strikes our mind isDell.Michael Dell the CEO and Chairman of Dellcomputers has turned the PC world insideout.Dell computer has emerged as a runawaymoney train. It is the only Fortune 500company that has increased sales and earningsby more than 40% a year in each of the pastthree years.

Last Summer,Benaron ,had of information technology at Wooleich ,aBritish bank with $64 billion in assets decidedthe bank needed a computer overhaul. Hewanted to purchase 2,700 Pentium II PCs and800 servers. Dell was in the competition . " Atfirst it was between Dell,IBM, and HP but IBMdropped out because it couldn't match theprice," says Benaron. The HP and Dell bids werenearly identical ,he says ,except for one criticaldetail. The HP reseller would only ship the orderto the bank's headquarters, whereas Dell woulddelivr ready to-boot machines to each of it's450 branches. At no added cost."That was theclincher" says Benaron, who estimatesWoolwich saved over $750,000by going withDell.

Another perfect example regarding the better services provided can be Wal-

Mart chain of founder discount stores. Sam

Walton, Chairman and CEO,also the of wal-mart,

    always considered consumer preferences. He

wanted to provide good quality products to his

customers at discounted prices. According to him

it is not only necessary to meet customer

expectations but also to exceed them. His

philosophy was that the workers of the company or

' associates ' as he calls them are engaged in

providing better services to the customers. So the

key to gaining more customers is to keep the

associates happy. He gave the associates share in

the profits as well as scheme to buy stock options

of the company. As the company earned profitsover the years the associates also profited

immensely through these policies. This boosted

their morale and gave them a sense of

responsibility towards the company and henced

they served their customers more deligently.
