child arrives at school wearing their P.E. kit in accordance with the

school’s uniform policy and have jogging bottoms and a warm top for

colder weather. Please also ensure your child wears a pair of trainers,

as school shoes are not suitable for P.E.

Reading in Year 1Thank you for supporting your children with our

Reading Rocket Challenge. Once children

have read to an adult and

their red reading diary has been initialled,

they are moved up the Reading Rocket.

Once they reach the top they will

receive a reward.

In Year 1, we are laying the foundations for

children to read for pleasure, develop their

understanding of texts, widen their vocabulary and apply their

reading skills to all areas of the curriculum.

Just ten minutes a day makes all the difference!

Phonics ScreeningAll Year 1 children have a phonics assessment at the end of Year 1. To

support children with their phonics skills, children are grouped in the

appropriate Phonics Phase. We have phonics sessions three times a

week and also cover phonics through our literacy lessons and guided

reading sessions.

Please visit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCI2mu7URBc to

support your child with the correct pronunciation.

Additional practice activities for children to secure their phonics

knowledge will be added to our class pages in the New Year. This will

be available under the Phonics Screening Practice Booklet tab on our

class pages.

How we use Acelerated

ReaderEach child takes a STAR Reader test once per term to determine their ZPD(reading score.)

Children choose a book to read at the lower end of their ZPD initially toread at school and home.

Children don’t have to read every book in the level but need to read awide range, and be scoring 85-100% on the majority of quizzes beforethey can move up to the next level.

Children should read on average 20 minutes each day to make maximumprogress

Once the child has read the book, they quiz the following day. For theyounger children, we ask them to read the book twice so that they aremore likely to score 100%.

Page 11: Who’s who in Y1 and Y2

Children can quiz during the day, they cannot quiz at home.

Computers are always on AR homepage for children to quiz.

Aim is to get 85% or more on the quiz.

KS1 TAs to write down the score they got in their reading record andsupport them in choosing a new book.

Depending on how they have scored on their quiz will depend on howmany points they achieve to go towards their target – if they get 100%they will earn all the points.

Targets get checked by teachers and adjusted when they reach thetop of their flower.

HomeworkHomework will be to read every night for up to 20 minutes, five

times a week.

When reading, please question your child about the book as

reading is not just about the written word, it is also about your

child’s understanding of the book. You will find questions you

can use under the reading tab on our class pages.

Please help your child learn to read and then spell the Year 1

and 2 common exception words. These can be found under the

common exception words tab on our class pages. Children are

expected to know how to read and write these words by the end

of Key Stage One.

Maths In Year 1Number

In Year 1, children will be learning to count up and down in 1’s up to 100.

Then moving onto counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s across numbers to 100. Recall

of number facts like; number bonds to 10. doubles and halves up to 10.

Addition and Subtraction:

We will be using number tracks, number lines and hundred squares to

reinforce the skill of adding and subtracting. Children will be taught the

relationship between add and subtract as inverse.

Multiply and Divide:

Use objects, pictorial representations and arrays to show the concept of

division and multiplication. Multiply can we seen as ‘lots of’ e.g. 2 lots

of 4, whereas divide can be seen in terms of grouping and sharing.

Page 20: Who’s who in Y1 and Y2

Maths in Year 2Number

In Year 2 children will become more fluent at counting in 2’s, 3’s, 5’s and

10’s. They will recall number bonds and facts to 20. They will be able to

recall doubles and halves up to 20.

Addition and Subtraction:

In Year 2 will develop the children’s use of

number lines as a method. Initially using number

lines to count up and back. Eventually leading to

no need of a numbered line, where children make

their own choice in size of jump.

Multiply and Divide:

Children will be able to recall multiplication facts

from the 2X, 3X, 5X and 10X tables. We will then be

looking at multiply and divide a repeated addition

and repeated subtraction. This will be done through

the use of arrays and number lines.
