Rosen Class Assembly

Year 1 held a brilliant class assembly yesterday. They celebrated work from their current topic ‘Fire’. We were all taken back to 1666. Along the way we met King Charles II, Mr Faryner and Samuel Pepys. The historic event, The Great Fire of London, was brought to life through dramatization and readings. I particularly enjoyed the dance routine to ‘The Chariots of Fire’. Well done to the Year 1 teaching team for preparing a fantastic assembly.

Ms Williams from Caterham Library came in to lead an assembly on Tuesday to tell the children all about this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, The Big Friendly Read. Information about this event is detailed below:

Join for free at Caterham Hill Library Children's reading can 'dip' during the long summer holidays. The annual Summer Reading Challenge helps gets three quarters of a million children into libraries to keep up their reading skills and confidence. The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to read six books during the long summer holiday. There is a different theme each year. Children can read whatever they like - fact books, joke books, picture books, audio books - just as long as they are borrowed from the library. Children receive special rewards each time they finish a book and there's a certificate for everyone who completes the Challenge. Caterham Valley and Caterham Hill Libraries (along with libraries all over the U.K.) are celebrating 100 years of the world’s favourite storyteller – Roald Dahl. Children can sign up to the Summer Reading Challenge at their local library from 16 July and get a free collector folder to keep their special Big Friendly Read cards. There are six cards to collect. It’s fun, friendly and FREE. Rosen Class Educational Visit to Ightham Mote

Mrs Afzal writes:

On Monday 20th June Rosen Class went to Ightham Mote in Sevenoaks. The manor house is steeped in history as it can count medieval knights, courtiers of Henry VIII and a Victorian American businessman amongst its previous owners. The children started their visit with a tour of the house. They looked at key periods ranging from Medieval, Tudor, Stuart, Victorian and the Modern Era. The children were then split into two groups. Some completed a House Detectives Quiz and others completed a Handling workshop on Tudor artefacts such as pottery and quill. Despite the rainy weather the class had a lovely time playing with Tudor toys and dressing up as Tudors at lunch. During the afternoon the class learnt about the Tudor diet and way of life. Maude (the Tudor Cook) answered a number of questions from the children. Later in the week the class wrote thank you letters to the Education Team at Ightham Mote. This is part of Hayden Quarmby’s brilliant letter:

Outdoor Table Tennis Table

We have had a brand new, permanent outdoor table tennis table installed in the school grounds. I have been extremely keen to have one installed for children to use for doubles matches at break and lunchtimes. Thank you to Mr Butler, Mr Mould, Mr Barnes, Mr Cronin and Mr Thompson for assembling the table last Friday evening. It looks brilliant! I look forward to seeing the children develop a love for this sport. All we need now is some pleasant, dry weather so that we can begin making full use of it.

New Lockers for Dahl Class

Mr Butler has recently installed brand new lockers for Year 5. The current Year 4 pupils were involved in selecting the locker colours and it is lovely to see them installed and being used. Last year we had Year 6 lockers installed and we are very grateful to Audley PA for funding the Year 5 locker installation. They look brilliant and make the cloakroom areas look much smarter.

Dahl Class Educational Visit to de Stafford School

Year 5 were invited to a drama taster session at de Stafford School on Tuesday afternoon. It is fantastic to have such strong links with local high schools in the area. The school works in close partnership with de Stafford on a number of different levels. Having the opportunity to be taught in specialist rooms, like a drama studio, really captivates and inspires a love of different subjects. I know that the content of the taster drama lesson – Charlie Chaplin, sparked a real interest in the work of mime artists.

Morpurgo Class Educational Visit to Pineapple Studios and The Lion King

I was fortunate enough to accompany the Year 6 educational visit to Pineapple Studios and The Lyceum Theatre to see a matinee performance of The Lion King, on Wednesday. We were met at Waterloo Station by our tour guide, Adam. He directed us to Covent Garden where the class learnt about diverse forms of entertainment in the immediate area – from Punch and Judy to finding out about London’s leading theatre – The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, currently the destination for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The class continued on to Pineapple Studios which as expected, delivered plenty of excitement. Some of the class passed Anton du Beke from Strictly Come Dancing on the way to Studio 7. The dance workshop that followed was a fantastic experience for the children. It was led by an actress from The Lion King and the class practised and performed a dance routine to ‘They Live in You’. I have uploaded several movie clips to the school twitter account.

The matinee performance of The Lion King was amazing. The children were captivated throughout. What a wonderful day! Thank you to the Year 6 parents for their patience and understanding as different groups arrived back at different stations.

The Daily Mile

Next week each class will take part in a ‘daily mile’. For this fun, non-competitive challenge each Key Stage 2 class will walk, jog or run one mile and Key Stage one and Reception will walk, jog or run a mile each day. Please ensure that your child has their outdoor PE kit, including trainers, to change into. If the weather is hot it is advisable that children wear sunhats, come to school wearing plenty of sunscreen and have their water bottles. In addition to the ‘daily mile’ the school has arranged through the Kelly Holmes Trust for the Olympic Athlete, Romaine Bailey, to spend the day at Audley on Wednesday 29th June. Romaine’s specialist sport is Taekwondo. If your child is a Taekwondo practitioner, then they are welcome to come to school dressed in their dobok for the day on Wednesday.
