Family News

Preaching at Crestview

When the East Win Christian Church in Memphis decided to begin a Hispanic ministry our family was asked to lead the music, and we have witnessed how God’s Kingdom expands among Hispanics in Memphis.

Stephanie and Andrea at CCU

After two years of full-time work at Walgreens, Yoisa has asked to work only one day a week due primarily to health reasons. The physical nature of the work (all day on her feet and lifting heavy crates) had left her in constant pain.

Daniel to Memphis

Our baby is now 16 years old and active in choir and bowling. Daniel is studying computer science, while Andrea hopes to join Stephanie at Cincinnati Christian University studying Psychology. The three older ones are working over the summer to save up for school, Daniel at Walgreens, Stephanie at Cracker Barrel, and Andrea at the YMCA.

MSCC Extends a Hand to Students of a Sister Bible College

When news reached Mid-South Christian College (MSCC) that students at a sister Bible College that also teaches in Spanish were in danger of being forced to leave the country because of an administrative oversight, MSCC immediately offered to help out during the crisis. Those students who would lose their international student visas may transfer to MSCC for a reduced price for the spring semester until the sister institution is able to receive them again. Some students have already accepted the offer and more might follow.

We are now preparing space in the dorms and revising our class schedules to accommodate an influx of new students for the spring semester.

MSCC teaches all classes in English and Spanish. All degrees and certificates are offered in English and Spanish as well

Overview of Mission

Graduation

On May 10th, Mid-South Christian College celebrated the graduation ceremonies of seven students, which is the largest graduating class in many years. One of them, a Hispanic student, is now preaching, three are involved in the Coffee shop ministry, and the rest serve in a variety of capacities.

Avenue Coffee

Avenue Coffee is the ministry outreach of the first group of students to graduate from the BCL – Bachelor of Christian Leadership Program, which is designed to help students develop their own ministry outreach program. Avenue opened in late April.

Classes

Brent taught a large number of classes this spring semester, including two in Spanish and 5 in English. He also lead chapel services, preached on Sundays, lead music on Sunday evenings, and tried to keep up with it all.

Graduation 2014

Challenging School Year

This year was especially challenging due to the sudden passing of our long-time Academic Dean, Wray Graham. He died on Thanksgiving Day having recently finished our major report to the Accrediting Association.

MSCC exists to glorify God by partnering with Christian Churches in raising up individuals called by God to fulfill the global vision of Christ by facilitating their academic, practical and spiritual preparation.

Focus on Preparing Students for Ministry

In spite of the challenges God has once again seen us faithfully through another year and, more importantly, has helped us to carry out the mission of preparing students to fulfill the global vision of Christ.

One of our graduates, Paul Puluc, is already preaching at a small congregation. He is a native of Guatemala and studied in our Spanish program.

Two graduates, a married couple, currently serve in children’s ministry at the Christview Christian Church in Southaven, MS, and hope to be house parents at an orphanage in the future.

Four of our students started the Avenue Coffee ministry outreach designed to impact the lives of young people in their 20’s. They are strategically located near the campus of the University of Memphis.

Avenue Coffee is Open

Avenue Coffee’s Purpose is to move disenchanted college students and their peers towards full engagement in the kingdom of God with an atmosphere that is open, creative, and conducive to conversation.

Avenue Coffee now open in Memphis

Avenue Coffee is located in the University of Memphis area in midtown Memphis, TN, an area with more than 23,000 college age individuals.

U. of M. students are defining their lives and their beliefs, and many of them have disengaged from the organized church. Avenue Coffee provides a place for them to seek answers and connect to the kingdom of God.

The aim is to create an environment that draws people in, allows opportunities for evangelism and discipleship, and glorifies and worships God through the beauty of creativity.

It was a ministry project of MSCC’s action learning program under the mentorship of MSCC staff members.
