collected to benefit the programs at Hope House. The
proceeds from the Coffee Hour sponsored by the Social
Ministry Committee on that Sunday will also benefit Hope
House.

Lake, educational programs and job training for adults,

for Hope House. Food collected on every other Sunday
will go to Unity Lutheran Church.

MEN’S BOOK CLUB Monday, February 17, 2020 7:00 pm @ Ann’s Italian
Book discussion: The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein
If you've ever wondered what your dog is thinking, Stein's third novel offers an answer. Enzo is a lab terrier mix

track and off.
ALTAR GUILD
The Altar Guild is a Christian organization whose chief
function is the care and maintenance of the Altar linens,
the Paraments and setting up for communion. Each week
2 members set up the communion table before service as
well as the clean up after communion. Soiled linens are
taken home and washed. The Altar Guild is responsible
for the washing of the Pastor’s, assisting ministers and
acolytes robes.
Duties also include the changing of the Paraments to
coordinate with the church calendar, setting up the
Baptismal Font for Baptisms and maintaining the pew
cards.
The Altar Guild sponsors the Easter Brunch on Easter
morning and the coffee hour between services the 4th
Sunday of the month. The monies collected goes towards
extra items not covered under the budget. In the past
monies have also been donated to church projects.
If anyone is interested in joining the Altar Guild, you can
contact Pat Suderland, Linda Shea or Evie Schubert.
LADIES OF WPLC
The Ladies of WPLC is a group of women who volunteer
to help with funeral lunches and other events for WPLC
when requested. They also serve the second Sunday
coffee hour on even calendar months. The income from
donations goes towards kitchen and church needs.
For the last two years the Ladies of WPLC have held a
Holiday Bake Sale; featuring Christmas Cookies, breads,
candies, and other delicious items. The proceeds in 2018
went to Helping Hands and in 2019 for repair and
maintenance items with in the church.
In October we sponsored Senior Sunday, honoring our
Senior members who are 80+ years young.
If you love to bake we can always use your help whether
coffee hour, bake sales or funerals.
Look for our Ministry display in February in
Hornburg Hall.

FROM MY PERCH: I have been home for nearly a week with a respiratory virus. It started just before we left for
Pasadena and the Rose Bowl. Going to the Tournament of Roses parade and game has been
on my bucket list as long as I can remember—long before “bucket list” was even coined as a
phrase. I always told my husband that if Greendale High School’s band was ever chosen to go, we would be there.
This was the year.
Fortunately, with lots of ibuprofen, some allergy nose spray recommended by a pharmacist in Anaheim, and some
tasty honey-flavored cough syrup, I had a week that surpassed my wildest dreams. We volunteered putting over
800 roses individually in tiny vials in the float building barns and excitedly watched for red roses for the Wisconsin
float, orange roses for the Honda float and pink roses for the Blue Diamond Almond float during the parade on
New Year’s Day.
Though the game result wasn’t what we hoped for, we had excellent seats, and we enjoyed cheering with nearby
Wisconsin fans and meeting very friendly Ducks fans. We enjoyed seeing some of the band members from the
Japan Green Marching band and working with them as fellow float building volunteers. It was a thrill to see them
perform at Bandfest just before the Greendale band and again in the parade.
I have often preached about living in the present, and during this week, thanks to God’s grace and so many won-
derful people, I did just that. And then I crashed. Today, I am finally feeling better, in part due to lots of sleep,
more medicine, the thoughtfulness of friends and family, and of course, prayer.
Today, as I was struggling with what to write about the phone rang. It was one of my friends that had been
diagnosed with ovarian cancer just before Christmas. She had surgery, and though it was successful, she is still
facing six weeks of radiation after recovering from the surgery. She is doing much better, and is finding it hard
to relax and heal—and wait to begin the next leg of her treatment.
She and her husband have always taken a trip to somewhere warm during the winter, and this year they had to
cancel their plans and alter them for something smaller and later, perhaps in April. Her “living in the present” is not
so pleasant right now, and even the immediate future is daunting.
My friend is a gardener, and so we talked about the story of the gardener’s faith in the planting of a bulb. We
plant it in fall, and wait through the cold, gloomy winter—until in spring it blooms as a lovely tulip.
I encouraged her to plan the trip in April with her husband, to look ahead. Her doctors have given her an excellent
prognosis, and though she is fearful, it is time to live in the future, because that is where God’s grace lies also.
If things aren’t looking so good for you right now, perhaps you too should plan for a glorious future because God
will travel that journey with you always.
********
Please join Pastor at the Sunday School families and teachers’ meeting on Sunday, Feb. 2 after the second service
to discuss plans for next year.
I will also be looking for confirmation mentors for our eight students who will be confirmed in May. If you are
interested in serving as a mentor, please let me know. Training will be scheduled in February, and installation will
occur the Sunday before Ash Wednesday. If you have questions about the mentorship program, send me an
email at [email protected].
To all of you, Happy Valentine’s Day!

FROM MY SUNDAY SCHOOL DESK: “Maybe Christmas (he thought) doesn’t come from a store.
Maybe Christmas perhaps means a little bit more.”
For those of you who are familiar with the Christmas movie
“How the Grinch Stole Christmas”, you have heard that famous
quote spoken by the Grinch. During this month well known for
“Love”, that famous quote can most certainly be applied to
Valentine’s Day. We must remember that it is not just about
the flowers and chocolates. Perhaps it is smiling at a passerby
or being patient with sales clerks. We must show kindness – we
must live love.
We have returned from our holiday break and have jumped
back into our learning, with a Rotation on the Ten Command-
ments. Our next Rotation will begin in February, with the story
of “Jesus Feeds 5,000”.
There are still some boxes of Sunday school offering envelopes
that have not been picked up. Please contact Kelly Brown if you
have not yet received your child’s offering envelopes.
Reminder:
Feb. 23 – Teacher meeting (Session 6 teachers will receive binders)

UPCOMING EVENTS IN MARCH:
2020 LENTEN SOUP LUNCH AND SOUP SUPPER:
Wednesday, March 4th is the first of five Wednesdays in Lent when we hold a Lenten
Soup & Sandwich Lunch following the Noon worship service and a 6:00 pm Lenten
Soup Supper prior to the 7:00 pm worship service. All are welcome. If you plan to
attend either of the Lenten meals and wish to donate a food item or dessert, you are
certainly welcome to do so (look for the sign-up sheets posted in Hornburg Hall). A
freewill donation is collected at both the lunch and dinner to help cover expenses.
WPLC SHOWCASE OF TALENT!
Five years ago, as part of our 75th anniversary celebration, WPLC held a talent show highlighting the various
aptitudes of some of our members…it was awesome! We then did it again in 2017 as a benefit for our organ
refurbishment fund, and again last year in 2019. We are now going to do it again this year because the people
have spoken and once more want to see this glorious entertainment! Please join your church family as we put
our talents on display in the Fellowship Hall on Saturday, March 21st from 2 to 4 pm. Desserts and coffee will be
served. Look for the sign up if you are willing to be a performer, bring a treat or if you simply plan on attending.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
At the last bible study, one of our members shared that in her bible there is a section that highlights various
passages of where to look in the bible for a variety of life's circumstances. This is an incredibly helpful tool, so
for this month, I'd like to post this information as it offers a wonderful guide through scripture for very practical
