• Just because it’s on the web, doesn’t mean you can use it
• Works are inherently copyright- protected when created, the rights usually belonging to the creator

• If in doubt, assume full copyright protection applies
• Unless explicit permission is given by the owner you are not entitled to download, copy or print the material

• Copyright is automatic, but rights can be:– Sold, assigned– Licensed (exclusively or non-exclusively)– Waived– Bequeathed– Expired (unlikely for majority of material
on web)
Checklist for using copyright works
• Only use if: You own the rights The rights holders give you permission The rights have expired Under the copyright exceptions

• Permitted uses or ‘fair dealing’– ‘Insubstantial’ part of work (substantial =
‘qualitatively significant’)– Non-commercial research or private
study– Criticism, review, reporting current
