CHRIST HAS COME AMONG US
"They set out. And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them...."--leading them toward the child who had been born king of the Jews.
We have heard this story many times. This would be the time, when our children were young, that we would bring out the tiny camels and the wise men and place them in our creche. It would be the last act of our Christmas story. In a few days the small figures and other decorations still up from this joyous season would be carefully put away for another year.
Astronomers debate whether the star marked the arrival of a comet, a supernova, or possibly a rare celestial conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn. Theologians note that only Matthew records the story, and some suggest it is a pious fiction designed to integrate older writings into the birth narrative of Jesus.
Questions abound but the essential messages remain. For Paul, it is the mystery now made known to humankind. Isaiah urges rejoicing. "Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! Your light has come!" The Epiphany reveals that Christ had come among us all.

WALKING WITH PURPOSE
Walking With Purpose is more than a Bible study, it's a supportive community of women seeking lasting transformation of the heart.
And you are invited.
Walking With Purpose believes that change happens in the hearts of women - and, by extension, in their families and beyond - through Bible study and community. We welcome all women!
If you are interested in registering - please contact Deanna Burke by email or phone at [email protected] or 447-3500. Keeping in Balance, the book we'll be using, can be purchased online at www.walkingwithpurpose.com. The books are in for those that pre-ordered through the parish and are available after masses and during office hours in Deerfield.
Our first gathering will be on Wednesday, January 9, from 7:00 until 8:00PM in the SALT Center. Please bring your books; we’ll watch a short video and use our books for discussion afterwards!MISSING PAN
A glass 9x13 baking pan belonging to a parishioner was taken by mistake after the funeral luncheon in Blissfield last week. Please check your kitchen cabinets and if you took the wrong dish, return it to the kitchen in Blissfield. Thank you!

What is the feast of the Epiphany?
According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church:
The Epiphany is the manifestation of Jesus as Messiah of Israel, Son of God and Saviour of the world. the great feast of Epiphany celebrates the adoration of Jesus by the wise men (magi) from the East, together with his baptism in the Jordan and the wedding feast at Cana in Galilee.
In the magi, representatives of the neighboring pagan religions, the Gospel sees the first-fruits of the nations, who welcome the good news of salvation through the Incarnation.
The magi's coming to Jerusalem in order to pay homage to the king of the Jews shows that they seek in Israel, in the messianic light of the star of David, the one who will be king of the nations.
Their coming means that pagans can discover Jesus and worship him as Son of God and Saviour of the world only by turning towards the Jews and receiving from them the messianic promise as contained in the Old Testament.
The Epiphany shows that “the full number of the nations” now takes its “place in the family of the patriarchs”, and acquires Israelitica dignitas (is made “worthy of the heritage of Israel”) [CCC 528].
The magi followed the star and found Baby Jesus.
