This tough-little off-roader trades V6 muscle forfour-cylinder fuel efficiencyand was revised in 2009 with a wheelbarrow-full of changes to the chassis, engines, and cabin.

For the 2011 model year, however, theGV comes with a 166-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine, which means there’s no more 230-horsepower 3.2-litreV6. The four-cylinder is teamed with a four-speed automatic transmission whereas the V6 has a five-speed unit.

There’s still standard four-wheel-drive:a dual-range unit (with a low-speed set-ting for serious off-roading) with a dash-mounted transfer-case switch. Helping things out is traction and stability con-trol that keeps the vehicle pointed in theright direction when the wheels start tolose grip.

The GV also features a reinforcedcabin for greater crash safety and a rigid platform that’s intended to aid both rideand road-holding capability. For the 2011 model-year, Grand Vitara trim levels are JX and JLX with a number of pack-ages available. Base models come withplenty of stuff for your $30,000 invest-ment, including climate control, all thement, including climate control, all the

usual power accessories, alloy wheels and pushbutton start. Even though ithas a four-cylinder engine for 2011, the Grand Vitara can still tow 3,000 pounds, which is good enough for a small traveltrailer. Passing a transport truck at high-way speeds on a busy two-lane, however, might be a thing of the past.might be a thing of the past.

Tthe Kizashi is an inter-esting mix of form and function. In terms of size, this family-oriented four-door slots almost exactly half-way between other vehicles. It would appear that there’s a new mid-small — or is thatjjunior-large — category.

The Kizashi has become Suzuki’sflagship and represents a bold move by the automaker to shift to more upscale products. The wrap-around grille — with new chrome bits blended in for 2011 —— and hood appear influenced by the SX4 model and the short rear deck and hunkered-down suspension transmit asporty vibe.

Inside, the well-bolstered front seats areof a type rarely found in conventionalsedans, even as an option. The split-fold-ing rear seat provides a decent amountof room in back for two adults. The one and only engine is the 185-horsepower2.4-litre four-cylinder unit and a six-speed manual transmission. Swap in the continuously variable transmission andthe horsepower rating drops to 180. You’ll need the CVT to get all-wheel-drive.

For the 2010 model year, Kizashi was available in one fully loaded model and available in one fully-loaded model and

in all-wheel-drive. For 2011, you’ll have your pick of S, Sport, SXi AWD. Thatmeans, of course, that the base pricedrops. Even still, the S comes nearly fully loaded with the exception of leather seats. The Sport is the only model to come with a manual transmission.come with a manual transmission.

The Equator pickup isnow in its second year. The Equator displays a distinctive grille and bumper for a bold, aggressive look.

The four-door Crew Cab body style has been fitted with a 261-horsepower 4.0-litre V6 and a five-speed automatic transmission. Also standard is a shift-on-the-flyfour-wheel-drive system with bothhigh/low range operated by an electronically controlled part-time transfer case. A four-wheel limited-slip system helps transfer power to the drive wheels with more grip when traction becomes iffy.

The Equator is meant to be drivenoff-road, so key underbody hardware is tucked up to the frame rails for 23centimetres of ground clearance.

The standard-features list includesair conditioning, cruise control, remote keyless entry and power mirrors, locks and windows and a six-speaker audio system. You also get a factory-applied spray-on bedliner that helps prevent corrosion and damage.

Although the base Equator is pricedat slightly less at slightly less than a comparthan a comparablyably

equipped competitor model, it nowincludes Hill Start and Hill DescentControl systems that keep the pickup from rolling backward when stoppedon an incline while in gear, or fromtravelling faster than intended down a slope.

The 2011 collection continues in sedan and hatchback models, while the new-last-year Aero hatchback has been discontinued. A 150-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinderengine provides the motivation and Suzuki explains that its architectureis actually based on the 2.4-litre four-cyl-inder that powers the Kizashi four-door sedan.

Transmission choices include a six-speed manual or optional continuouslyvariable units. The sedan is front-wheel-drive only, while the hatchback can behad in front- or all-wheel-drive. Theoptional AWD system in the hatch hasthree driver-controlled modes: front-wheel-drive for dry pavement; all-wheel-drive automatic that varies the torquesplit depending on available traction toa maximum of 50 per cent to the rear; and all-wheel-drive lock (30-50 per centrear bias) that’s “designed to facilitate escape,” which is defeated once the SX4is travelling beyond 50 km-h.

For 2011, the hatchback comes in JA,JX and JLX while the sedan comes in JAand Sport, the latter of which includes special cladding, blacked-out grille and alowered ride height.

Common to all are four wheel discCommon to all are four-wheel disc

brakes with anti-lock, 16-inch alloy wheels, six airbags, power windows, locks and mirrors, remote keyless entry, air conditioning, four-speaker CD audiosystem and tilt steering. New this yearare standard rear-seat side-impact air-bags, bringing the total to eight.

The vehicle has generousdimensions, with an ampletrunk that ranks secondin its class. For those who need more flexibility haul-ing bulky objects, a five-door hatchback joins the four-door sedan and two-door Koup inthe Forte family.

To better distinguish it from the sedan, the hatchback gets a different grille, alloy wheels, lower valence design and centre console. Both models share a logically configured dashboard/controlpanel with its minimum of dials and switches.

The Forte’s platform provides a reason-ably agile behind-the-wheel experience. This is especially true of the Forte SXthat possesses a sport-tuned suspen-sion plus larger-than-standard frontbrake rotors for added stopping power. The Forte starts with a 156-horsepower2.0-litre four-cylinder in base LX and mid-range EX trims. Opting for the moreperformance-minded SX gets you a 173-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder. Thebiggest mechanical change for the 2011 model year is that both engines now use either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions (formerly a automatic transmissions (formerly a

five-speed automatic). Choosing the autoalso brings new steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. LX content is modest, but does provide power windows, heatedoutside power mirrors, manual tilt steer-ing and a four-speaker audio system withsteering wheel mounted controls.steering-wheel-mounted-controls.

Based on the same mid-sized car platform as the new Hyundai Sonata, where the Hyundaiis organic, the Kia is more chiseled and more European. The Optima alsoshares the Sonata’s range of four-cylin-der engines, which is a real gamble in amarket so obsessed with power. But thosefour-bangers are nothing to sneeze at.

The entry-level engine is a 2.4-litre unit that produces a very healthy 200horsepower. If that doesn’t sate yourtaste for speed, there’s a 271-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. There’s also a hybrid-electric version of the 2.4, but with only 169 horses. As you mightexpect, the hybrid is the most fuel effi-cient, but even the base engine produces a respectable 11.7/8.1 l/100 km (city/highway).

The hybrid system uses never-before-employed lithium-polymer batteriesthat are lightweight and can actually be formed into shapes. The hybrid can trav-el at speeds of up to 100 km-h without the gas engine assisting.

The third-generation Sportage follows the similarly sized andfocused Hyundai Tucson (Kia ispart of Hyundai) in receiving a whole new look and a sharedpurpose in life. They also share the same basic platform and are roughly the same size.

Styling aside, the most significant change to the Sportage is what you’ll no longer find under the hood and that’san optional V6. The sole powerplant is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder that generates 176 horsepower when hooked up to a six-speed manual transmission (availableonly on base front-wheel-drive models), or 170 horses with the optional six-speed automatic. Later in the model year, Kia will reportedly introduce a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder thatwill pump up the volume to the tune of270-plus horses.

The Sportage is the beneficiary of a brand new all-wheel-drive system that under normal driving conditions directs 100 per cent of the engine’storque to the front wheels. However, once tire slip is detected, the required degree of power is instantly deployedto the rear wheels. Additionally, a manually selected Lock Modea manually selected “Lock Mode”

allows for a fixed 50:50 torque split at speeds up to 40 km-h for those times when sustained maximum traction isrequired. The base edition includes air conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth short-rage wireless connectivity and Hill Start Assist (that prevents the vehicle from rolling backward down a hill while in gear). hill while in gear).

The Sorento, Kia’s truckish big wagon that specialized in travel-ling well past the point where the pavement or the trail ends, has now become a lot more urbanized.

Although the off-road fraternityloved the previous model, Kia saw greener pastures in selling the next-gen-eration Sorento to a broader group seek-ing a stylish, comfortable wagon thattakes its highway-cruising role seriously, regardless of weather or road status. The 2011 edition, available in front- or all-wheel-drive, also offers a split-folding third-row-seating option for folks need-ing to transport up to seven passengers.

Buyers can choose between a 175-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder engineand a 276-horsepower 3.5-litre V6. Both are closely matched in terms of fueleconomy, which means your final choicewill likely boil down to affordability and the amount of grunt you require. A six-speed manual transmission is standard with the four-cylinder, with a six-speedautomatic optional, but standard with the V6.

All-wheel-drive is available with eitherengine, except on the base manual-trans-mission model. Standard features includeair conditioning, tilt and telescopic steerair conditioning, tilt and telescopic steer-

ing column and steering-wheel-locatedaudio controls. The LX includes a few extra touches, while the EX adds dual-zone climate control, power-adjustabledriver’s seat, push-button-start ignition, backup warning and 18-inch alloy wheels(17 inchers are standard).(17-inchers are standard).

The Jetta is now dimen-sionally similar to its major competitors since it’s about eight centimetres longerthan the outgoing version. Most of that stretch occurs between the front and rearwheels for increased passenger comfort.

Pop open the hood to find the previ-ously retired 115-horsepower 2.0-litrefour-cylinder engine. VW claims a sub-10-second zero-to-60 mph (96 km-h) time and VW lopped off a whopping 200 kilo-grams of base curb weight. Last year’s standard 170-horsepower 2.5-litre five-cylinder gas engine returns as an option, as does the popular 140-horsepower 2.0-litre turbo-diesel (called the TDI). Arriving later will be the Jetta GLI with its 200-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-litrefour-cylinder.

The gasoline engines are mated to five-speed manual transmissions, or optional six-speed automatics. The turbo-dieseloffers a six-speed manual or optional six-speed automated manual transmission called the DSG (short for Direct Shift Gearbox) that does away with the pesky torque converter, which means improvedfuel economy and much quicker shifts toaid acceleration. aid acceleration.

Volkswagen’s Jetta TDI Clean Dieselwon the AJAC Award for “2011 Best

The 2011 Touareg hasa completely redesignedinterior space that gives as much comfort to thepassengers as the driver. It has an intelligent crash response system which auto-matically unlocks all doors, disconnects the battery terminal from the starter, shuts off the fuel supply and turnson the warning hazards and interior lights when a severe crash is detected.

There are many-driver friendly func-tions like the electronic parking brake which can be set and released at the touchof a finger, a tire pressure monitoring system, auto-dimming interior mirror, and 4Motion all wheel drive system with Torsen differential giving you a 31 degreeclimbing angle and stability on any type of ground surface. There’s also a standard navigation system, and available rear view camera.

A multifunction steering wheel keepspower and control at your fingertips.

The newly reshaped Touareg is lighter than its predecessor giving higher fuel efficiency. Both the TDI and the 3.6 Gas engines now come equipped with an 8 speed automatic transmission with

Volkswagen clearly believes there are ways to build fuel-efficient small cars other than following the hybrid route. Forproof, the German automakeroffers up the Golf with its clean-burning and affordable turbo-diesel engine option.

The Golf is available in two- and four-door hatchback variants as wellas wagon with a base 170-horsepower2.5-litre five-cylinder engine. The Tiguan is the kind of ride that price- and size-conscious buyerslook for in a vehicle that also offers enough space for their friends and/or family and their gear. And the fact that sure-footed all-wheel-drive is available makes this Volkswagen more enticing.

Of course an attractive design alsoadds to the Tiguan’s appeal, including an attractive chrome grille and bulging flanks that transmit a sense of stability and four-season competency. Equallysharp-looking is the interior that couldeasily pass as originating from BMW’s design studio, considering the high-end-style dash, cleanly tailored seats and premium carpeting. Rear passengers willappreciate the 15 centimetres of fore/afttravel as well as the reclining 60/40 split seat back. For more cargo space, the rearseat back, as well as the front passengerbucket, can be folded flat.

For 2011, Hyundai offers the Tucson in five model trim levels.

While the main four models(GL, GLS, Limited, Limited with Navi) all depend on the 2.4-litre four-cylinder “worldengine”, Hyundai this year slid in an entry-level L model with 2.0-litre engineinto the lineup.

The 2.4-litre with variable valve timing produces 176 hp and 168 lb/ft of torquewith a six-speed automatic transmis-sion with Shiftronic manual function.On-demand AWD is optional on theGL and GLS and standard on the twoLimiteds. The GLS AWD tested here has fuel consumption ratings of 10.1L/100 km city, 7.1L/100 km highway and 8.8L/100km combined.

In terms of safety equipment, theTucson leaves nothing out with anti-lock braking system (ABS), ElectronicStability Control (ESC), traction con-trol system (TCS), dual front, side, and curtain airbags with rollover sensor, Downhill Brake Control (DBC) and Hillstart Assist Control (HAC).

The 2011 Elantrahas wholesale changes starting with the switch tothe latest generation four-cylinder engineknown in-house as the“Nu”. At 1.8-litres, it replaces the 2.0-litre Beta engine in the outgoing Elantra.

Also new is a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission thatreplaces the former five-speed manual and four-speed automatic.

Hyundai claims best in class fuel economy, power and power-to-weight ratio in the class.

According to Hyundai Canada, the new Elantra should be good for 1,000kilometres on a single tank of regular fuel.

The 2011 Elantra is equipped withjjust about every safety and drive aid you can think of such as six airbags, electronic stability control with traction control and four-wheeldisc brakes that stop it shorter than a Civic and Corolla according to Hyundai.

As is usual with Hyundai, there arefive basic trim levels (L, GL, GLS, five basic trim levels (L, GL, GLS,

One look at the 2011 Sonataand it’s easy to see why Hyundai has been on such a roll of late.

The Sonata is sleek, sexy and as is the norm with Hyundai offerings, provides value for the dollar.

Seeing the strides Hyundai has made in the past few years, one shouldn’t betoo surprised that the Sonata may be one of the best bargains on the market for a mid-size sedan that has the interior of a full-size sedan.

If you don’t want all the bells andwhistles that the Limited trim offers, even the base GL is well equipped compared to almost any entry-levelcar.

Where Hyundai has always excelled is offering standard features on lower-priced cars that would be options elsewhere.

Case in point, the base GL modelSonata offers items like heated front seats (in automatic only), active frontheadrests, heated power adjustable side mirrors, remote keyless entry, steering wheel mounted audio andcruise control and Bluetooth hands free phone system as standard free phone system as standard

features.That, combined with the outstanding

five-year, 100,000 km comprehensive/powertrain should give owners peaceof mind.

Now that it has the styling to go along with what was already a great package, the 2011 Sonata is poised tobe at the top of the ladder in the mid-size class.size class.

With more than onemillion of these gasoline-electric cars whirring away around the globe, the Prius is acknowledged as the carthat took its unique fuel-sipping technology frompie-in-the-sky science experiment intothe mainstream. It has also proven to beone of the most practical and cleanestways so far to significantly reduce emis-sions and fuel use.

The 2011 Prius maintains most of themodel changes brought in for the 2010model year. The comfortable seats, theexpansive instrument panel, and the fact that up to three sets of golf clubs can be stowed in back, means the Prius feels roomier than the tape measure indicates.

The improved gasoline/electric-motorduo comprises a 98-horsepower 1.8-litrefour-cylinder engine teamed with a27-kilowatt electric motor to produce 134 horsepower. Since vehicle weight hasbeen kept in check, the Prius’s seeminglymoderate output can be felt the momentthe powerplant kicks in under accelera-tion. The standard continuously variable transmission helps achieve a rating of 3.7 l/100 km city (which is 76 miles per gallon, by the way) and 4.0 highway, gallon, by the way) and 4.0 highway,

while a dashboard display monitor tracksyour “green” status and will also tabulateaverage fuel economy over specific inter-vals or per trip.

The Prius delivers an impressive arrayof standard gear, while the optional con-tent list offers a unique power moonroof/solar panel that runs an electric fan tocool interior temperature on hot dayscool interior temperature on hot days.

If you think a Priushybrid is just too muchtechnology voodoo to handle, good fuel economy at a much lowerpricepoint is still possible; social responsibility at a personally responsible price.

The popular Yaris is available in threebody styles: a traditional four-door sedan that resembles a three-quarter-sized Camry; and two- and four-door hatchback versions that feature roomysplit-folding rear seats and can carryquite a load when those seats are foldedflat.

With a light base weight of 1,040 kilograms, the one-engine-fits-all 106-horsepower 1.5-litre four-cylinder feels rather peppy. It’s mated to a five-speedmanual transmission or optional four-speed automatic.

Base equipment for all is relatively spartan, while up-level models addair conditioning, power-controlled accessories and upgraded audio systems. The RS four-door hatchbackis the sporty one in the group andarrives with colour-keyed body bits, sport seats, 15-inch wheels (14-inchersare standard), CD equipped stereo and are standard), CD-equipped stereo and

special gauge lighting.Picking an RS also gets you air

conditioning, power windows, door locks and mirrors, keyless remote entry and fog lamps. From a pricing standpoint, loading up on options, while obviously tempting, might justmake a larger Corolla or Matrix a more appealing alternative.appealing alternative.

As before, there’s seating for up to eight passengers, or sevenif the optional second-row high-back chairs are selected to replace the three-person bench. On the top-level Sienna Limited, those chairs turn into reclining lounge seats that also feature swing-upfoot rests for maximum self-indulgent travel (just try to pry the kids out of them). The third-row bench folds flat into the load floor when not needed.

Along with being the only minivan available with all-wheel-drive (front-wheel-drive is standard), the Sienna now features a segment-exclusive four-cylin-der base engine: a 187-horsepower 2.7-litre powerplant. The now-optional 266-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 carries over fromthe 2010 model and is mandatory when all-wheel-drive is selected. Interestingly, the V6’s economy is close to that of the four-cylinder. Both engines connect to six-speed automatic transmissions thatreplace the previous five-speed unit.

The Sienna LE comes with tri-zone air conditioning (driver, passenger and rear),multi-adjustable driver’s seat, tilt and telescopic steering wheel plus the usual power-controlled goodies. The SportEdition includes a mesh style grille,Edition includes a mesh-style grille,

sporty body trim, taillights with tintedlenses, special instrumentation and inte-rior trim, sport-tuned suspension and 19-inch wheels (17-inchers are found onbase models). At the top end, the Limited, with its living-large lounge chairs, also has keyless remote entry and push-but-ton start, sliding first- /second-row floorconsole and a dual sliding moonroof.console and a dual-sliding moonroof.

While the smaller Tacomagives away some size and cargo capacity/towing ability to thelarger Tundra, how often – if ever–– do you need the extra capacity?Consider that the four-cylinderTacoma provides an impressive 10.0/7.7 city/highway rating, making it one of the more fuel-efficient smalltrucks in its class.

If, in fact, towing/hauling is more ofa concern, the Tacoma turns up the wick to the tune of 236 horsepower via the optional 4.0-litre V6. Outfitted with six standard airbags and traction and stability control to help keep thedriver on track when the road surface becomes disagreeable, the Tacoma comes in extended Access-Cab and four-door Double-Cab models and yourchoice of rear-or four-wheel-drive.

The box (available in two lengths) floor and walls in all cases are madeof composite plastic that obviouslywon’t dent or rust. Murano is a finely detailed tall wagon witha passenger-car-basedplatform. After only acouple years since a major redesign, the 2011 model year proves to be a season of fine tuning. A new grille, front bum-per and LED taillights top the changes. Inside, there are new colours for thegauges and centre console, along withsome changes to standard content.

As before, the Murano’s 265-horsepower3.5-litre V6 is your only pick. It’s con-nected to a second-generation continu-ously variable transmission designed to be smoother and quicker to respond todriver commands than the original. Eventhe Murano’s standard all-wheel-drive system was reprogrammed with shorter reaction time to more quickly move the power around when traction is dicey.

For 2011, a new SV trim level splits thegap between base and mid-level versions.Entry-point Murano models come with climate and cruise control, six-speakeraudio system, assorted power accesso-ries, six airbags plus traction and stabil-ity control to help keep the vehicle point-ed in the right direction. Moving up theprice list adds fog lights, power telescopic price list adds fog lights, power telescopic

steering wheel, leather seats, eight-waypower driver’s seat, four-way power pas-senger seat and a split-folding 60/40 rearseat. Loaded-up versions come with apower liftgate, heated front seats and out-side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, 20-inchwheels (new-design 18-inchers are stan-dard), premium 11-speaker sound system, 17-centimetre information display/rear-view monitor and a dual-panel moonroofwith a second row fixed skylight.with a second-row fixed skylight.

Being about 550 kilo-grams lighter (base weightto base weight) than theTitan and having a smallerengine(s) translates into a 10.7/8.7 l/100 km city/hwy rating (2.5-litre four-cylinder).

The base Frontier comes with 152-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder orthe optional 261-horsepower 4.0-litre V6that’s better suited to towing and off-roading since it’s the only way to get theoptional 4x4 system. The 4.0-litre engine is a direct offshoot of the award-winning 3.5-litre V6 that has appeared in manyother Nissan vehicles over the years.

The Frontier continues to be offered inboth extended-length King Cab and four-door Crew Cab body styles and in severaltrim levels including a base four-cylinder S (formerly XE) 4x2 King Cab and up-level SV (called the SE in 2010), ritzy SL (formerly the LE) and the off-road-in-spired PRO-4X model available in eitherKing or Crew Cab body styles. Titan makes an appeal to hard-working individuals with four choices in bed length, ending at7’3” (2.2 metres). You can onlyget the extra length, however, on extended-cab models and not the four-door Titans.

From the outside, the Titan mim-ics the dimensions and attitude of itsdomestic rivals and attempts to matchthem under the hood with an all-aluminum 317-horsepower 5.6-litre V8.More important than peak horsepower numbers is the torque, as in close to 400pound-feet of it, most of which is avail-able from just 2,500 rpm. That helps the Titan tow about 4,320 kilograms whenappropriately equipped.

Two cab styles are offered: extended King Cab (with a pair of reverse open-ing rear access doors that swing 180degrees); and a four-door Crew Cab.Both two- or four-wheel-drive versions are available. There’s enough interior room to hold five tall adults with front and rear legroom that’s practicallyidentical. Interior amenities include a choice of bench or bucket seats as wellas adjustable foot pedals. Four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock are standardas well as side impact and side curtain as well as side-impact and side-curtain

airbags and rear-proximity sensors thatalert you when your backup path isblocked. Back for more is the off-road-inspired PRO-4X model that comes with a lower final drive ratio, unique wheelswrapped in off-road rubber, additional skid plates to protect the Titan’s under-belly and electronic-locking rear dif-ferential.ferential.

The Juke’s front end sports a pair of audaciously shaped fendersthat dominate the overall look. Theheadlights appear countersunk into the nose between the bumper andthe grille while the integrated turn-signal pods are positioned on eitherside of the hood.

The five-passenger cabin confirms more free-form sculpting, especially the centre console that’s supposed to resem-ble a motorcycle fuel tank. The twinprimary gauges are oversized, the sportscar-like front seats are well bolstered andthe split-folding rear bench seat can be flattened to maximize cargo space. Thecompact Juke is nearly 60 centimetresshorter than Nissan’s mid-size Rogue. However, its generous width providessufficient shoulder room for adults.

The music for this Juke box is providedby a 188-horsepower 1.6-litre turbo-charged four-cylinder engine mated toa six-speed manual transmission (front-wheel-drive models only), or optional continuously variable (CVT) unit. Both the sedan and swoopy coupe receivefront and rear resculpting for the 2011 model year,.Honda’s thrifty 2.4-litreengine, when equipped with the optional five-speedautomatic transmission (a five-speedmanual in the base model), improves fueleconomy by seven per cent in the cityand 11 per cent on the highway, thanks to a raft of small changes including improved aerodynamics, revised gearing and reduced engine friction.

The base SE (replacing the LX) sedangets a 177-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cyl-inder while all EX and EX-L models fea-ture a 190-horsepower version of the 2.4. To stay competitive with vehicles such as the Nissan Altima and Toyota Camry,an optional 271-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 offers additional horsepower and torque.

A five-speed manual transmission orextra-cost five-speed automatic are avail-able on all four-cylinder models, while the five-speed automatic is standardwith the V6. Even after all these years, the Civic is still the car tobeat. Since the Fit arrived for the 2007 model year, the Civic has been pushed slightly upmarket, but stillfeatures the qualities that made this small car such a hit over the years.

The base engine continues to be a 140-horsepower 1.8-litre four-cylinder while a 197-horsepower 2.0 is the domain of Simodels.

A five-speed manual is standard while a five-speed automatic is optional. TheSi, in appealing to sports-minded drivers, gets a six-speed manual.

With each successive genera-tion, Honda has honed its full-size people mover to the point that every aspect of the vehiclefunctions in perfect harmony.

The distance between the front and rear wheels remains unal-tered, but overall length has been slightlyincreased and the body structure sits ever-so-slightly lower to the ground.

The Odyssey’s 3.5-litre V6 is mostlycarryover, but given a number of small improvements it has gained four morehorsepower (now 248) and a touch more torque. The engine’s standard variable cylinder management program seamless-ly cuts out two or three of the cylinders under light loads and helps contribute to significant fuel-economy gains. LX, EX and EX-L Odysseys equipped with five-speed automatic transmission are nowrated at 11.7 and 7.2 l/100 km (city/high-way), previously 13.3 and 8.5. Meanwhile, the Touring edition’s six-speed automatic helps improve those numbers to 10.9/7.1, compared to the previous 12.3/7.8 rating.

Fuel economy aside, the Odyssey drivesnoticeably flatter and truer than the out-going version with much reduced bodyroll in the turns. Interestingly, Hondaengineers shunned electric power steerengineers shunned electric power steer-

This nifty little sport coupe is Honda’s attempt to target a youngereco-aware demographic looking forsomething fun and affordable tobop around in. The CR-Z actually bears some resemblance to the CRX,Honda’s fondly remembered Civic-based runabout.

Lifting the mostly glass rear hatchreveals an abundance of cargo room as well as a hidden console directly behind the passenger seat that’s ideal for storing valuables. Since the CR-Z borrows from the four-door Insight hybrid’s architec-ture, the wide cabin has plenty of elbow room, something the skinny CRX (and original two-seat Insight, for that matter)lacked. A 1.5-litre four-cylinder gasolineengine combines with a helper electric motor/generator for a total of 122 hp.

Transmission picks consist of a super-smooth and super-fun six-speed manual(currently the only one available on anyhybrid), or optional continuously vari-able (CVT) unit with paddle shifters. The six-speed isn’t as fuel-efficient asthe CVT, but the manual makes the CR-Zmore fun to drive. Hill Start Assist elimi-nates the stress of launching the car onan incline. Both transmissions providethe driver with a selection of operating the driver with a selection of operating

modes: Normal for everyday city/high-way activities; Sport, which providesnoticeably more zip and steering effort; and Econ for maximizing fuel economy.Selecting either the Normal or Econ acti-vates either a blue- or green-colored ring inside the tachometer/rev gauge to indi-cate your driving style. The more greendisplayed, the better your fuel economy.displayed, the better your fuel economy.
