DIY BANGALORE
While Bangalore is a safe and friendly city to negotiate, we list some must-dos and just-don'ts to make your stay more rewarding
thLegend has it that king Veera Ballala, an 11Century Hoysala ruler, lost his way around the jungle while on a hunting expedition. Tired and hungry from his wanderings, he came across a poor and old woman who offered him a delicious meal of boiled beans. Touched by her kindness, the ruler christened the town 'Benda Kaal Ooru' or
the City of Boiled Beans. This boiled bean town may have a long way since Veera Ballala's times. But the DNA of the city has remained intact with the same streak hospitality coursing through it even today. A fact made evident by the scores of diverse people from around India who live in Bangalore, and feel at home in it.

Bangalore's pubs, clubs and restaurants shut at 11.30pm, Cinderella-style. So don't start your evening too late in order to get sufficient time for merriment. Don't fall for demands by auto drivers for excess fare.
Pay by the meter, which starts at a minimum fare of Rs 17. After 9pm, however, auto fares go up by 150%, i.e. one and a half times the meter fare. Avoid travelling during peak hours as traffic clogs up along arterial roads, ring roads and the main roads leading to the various IT parks. Don't shy away from seeking the help of locals if you are in need of help or directions. Bangaloreans are known to be a warm and friendly race, so do make contact. Women travelling alone after 10pm should

avoid public transport. Opt for cabs instead Meru Cabs and Easy Cabs operate across the city. Also, avoid walking alone on lonely stretches or dark streets late at night. Do not leave your bags unattended. Pick-pockets and bag snatchers are known to operate in crowded places like bus stands and on buses too. Do not head to restaurants without making dinner reservations, especially on weekends. Most lounge bars and restaurants take table bookings. Do not use unauthorised cabs to ride into the city from the Bengaluru International Airport, even if taxi touts try to court you at the airport. Use only 'airport authorised' taxi services, which include Easy Cabs, Meru Cabs and KSTDC. The 'Airport Taxi' signage installed at the baggage claim areas will point you in the direction.
BANGALORE AT A GLANCEBangalore is a feel-good place with glitzy malls, posh night spots, trendy restaurants and a gushy pace of life. But if you think it's all just nouveau razzle-dazzle, you're pretty far off the mark. This city of contradictions has not lost its abiding connection to the past. The mamis (traditional south Indian women) of Malleswaram, the Benne dosas (buttered rice and lentil crepe) in Basavanagudi and the Carnatic music kacheris (concerts of classical south Indian music) at Chamrajpet are also very much part of the Bangalore rubric. Bangalore is a multifaceted city that has worn multiple identities. In its past lives, the city has been a Cantonment town and a quiet pensioners' retreat with a surfeit of gardens and lakes, best-known for its pitch-perfect weather. This pot has its dents for sure creaking infrastructure, pot-holed roads and inadequate public transport. But shrugging these off and trundling along cheerfully through the zillionth Metro-construction-related traffic jam is what the indefatigable Bangalorean spirit is about. Palace Road, Tel: 2331 5789This Tudor-style castle sprawls across 400 acres of the Palace Grounds and offers an interesting peek into the life of royal Wodeyars, the dynasty that ruled Mysore from 1399 to 1947. The Bangalore Palace draws inspiration from the Windsor Castle in England and lavishly replicates it, from looming fortified towers and turreted parapets to Gothic windows and sweeping arches. The embellishments in the form of floral motifs, fluorescent ceramic tiles, wooden carvings and painted ceilings are highly ornate. The palace is steeped in luxury as seen in the elaborately done-up Durbar Hall, the lacquered furniture inlaid with mother-of-pearl and the rare Greek and Dutch paintings that hang on the walls. The origins of the palace go back to 1884 when it was bought by the Maharaja of Mysore, Chamaraja Wodeyar. Today, the palace is owned by the current descendant of the royal Wodeyar clan, Srikanta Datta Narasimharaja Wodeyar, who is also credited with renovating it. Don't skip the palace's public gallery which displays royal family portraits and historic photographs. The picturesque palace grounds are also a popular venue for cultural shows and private parties.

th18 century monument Tipu Sultan's Palace a looming Indo-Islamic structure. Little-known and little-visited, this palace served as the administrative seat of Tipu Sultan's kingdom, where the 'Tiger of Mysore' (as he was titled) retreated for the summer. It was Nawab Hyder Ali who started building the palace in 1781 and Tipu Sultan completed its construction in 1791. Like all the other Tipu Sultan palaces, this one is simple and elegant, and made of wood and stone. What is interesting about this monument is that it gives the illusion of being single-storeyed, while actually spreading across two floors. The faade of the palace is replete with pillars 160 fluted, wooden pillars to be precise, with some of them reaching all the way up to the upper storey. Cusped arches and brackets spring off these columns. The ground floor houses a museum of sorts, featuring interesting trivia about the statesman-king, Tipu Sultan. Paintings of the palace by British artist Robert Holmes are on display. The palace is poorly maintained, so you will have to use your imagination to view the palace in its former glory.

Just across the road from the Vidhana Soudha, sits a dramatic, bright red structure which houses Karnataka's State

In fact, 'Attara Kacheri' literally translates to 'eighteen offices', the number of departments that worked out of here. Built in the Graeco-Roman style with graceful Corinthian columns and dark-green wrought iron grillwork, the construction of this two-storied, terracotta-hued building was supervised by Commissioner Lewing Bowring, and was completed in 1868. An annexe was added on in 1995, which faithfully followed the original style of architecture. Watch out for the statue of Lord Cubbon astride his horse at the front of the Kacheri. Vidhana SoudhaThe Vidhana Soudha has recently cloned itself and its more modernist version sits to the south of the original. The 'Vikasa Soudha' was added as an extension as recently as 2005. This southern block houses more offices of the secretariat and is fitted with the latest amenities, while the structure of the building stays true to the original. The Vikasa Soudha is built in the same Neo-Dravidian style as its predecessor. Although it is not quite in the same majestic league as the Vidhana Soudha, this twin-building does add double the drama to the landscape.

Vidhana Soudha
Ambedkar VeedhiThe Vidhana Soudha's onion-shaped dome rises majestically over the rest of Bangalore's skyline. Housing the offices of the State Legislature and the Government Secretariat, the Vidhana Soudha is also something of an architectural landmark. This neo-Dravidian edifice, built in 1956, is a fusion of four distinctive architectural prototypes Dravidian, Rajasthani, Chola and Indo-Saracenic. The gleaming structure created with locally-quarried granite was built during the regime of Kengal Hanumanthaiah, chief minister of the former Mysore State. As you wander around the imposing VidhanaSoudha and take in its larger than life dimensions the towering domes, massive pillars, Rajasthani-style 'jharokhas' or balconies, archways and the grand stairway do pay attention to the minutiae as well. The ornately carved frieze panels, pillars and doors are peppered with geometrical designs and floral motifs, reminiscent of the Hoysala sculptures in Halebid and Belur. As you take your gaze right to the top, you can also spy the national emblem of the Sarnath lion crowning the dome. While the Vidhana Soudha's exteriors are open to the public, access to the inside of the building is restricted. Go here on Sunday evenings when a lit-up Vidhana Soudha makes for an elegant visual spectacle.

Works of other prominent Indian artists are also on display. Performance art shows as well as street and puppet theatre are staples at the open-air theatre on-campus. Motley exhibits from various periods in history are on display, from Hoysala sculptures, Chola bronzes and Rajasthani miniature paintings to ivory carvings, Vijayanagara relics to prehistoric artefacts from the Neolithic period. The museum showcases south Indian heritage prominently with ancient jewellery and textile exhibits. The upper galleries of the museum are art-heavy. Lalbagh is something of a botanical wonderland, covered with swathes of indigenous and international flora Hyder Ali imported plants from Afghanistan, England, Mauritius, Turkey, Africa and Persia to create the look and feel of a Mughal Garden. Rare tropical and sub-tropical plants, exotic flowers and ancient trees figure among Lalbagh's wealth of natural vegetation. The garden's attractions include the rose garden, a lotus pond, a floral clock, a bandstand and a mango grove. A glass hothouse modelled along the lines of the Crystal Palace in London, a lake and a quaint wooden bandstand are other Lalbagh landmarks. While the sights of Lalbagh are obviously stimulating, do pay attention to its sounds too. The garden is home to a flurry of birds, so take your binoculars along for an ornithological expedition. Perched on the top of the 'Hare Krishna Hill', the temple complex soars over the surrounding landscape with trademark towering 'gopurams'. One of the biggest Iskcon temples globally, the campus is large and airy with the main hall featuring a medley of deities from Balarama to Prahlada Naramsimha. An open theatre, a bakery and a Vedic Museum are also part of the temple's offerings.
UlsoorThis ancient temple in Ulsoor has a history of over five hundred years. Built by the chieftain of Bangalore, Kempegowda, the Someshwara Temple is a wonderful instance of Chola architecture. Dedicated to the deity Someshawara and his consort Kamakshi, this temple like so many Bangalore temples, has an icon of the sacred bull Nandi flanking the sanctum sanctorum. There are also visible influences of Vijayanagara architecture, as seen in a hall with 48 carved pillars and the massive 'gopuram' or pyramidal tower at the entrance.

The all-white, five-storied Jamia Masjid has striking architectural features including carved latticed windows, floral motifs, and capacious interiors replete with Rajasthani white marble. Gavipuram GuttahalliThis over-five-hundred-year-old Shiva temple was built in Kempegowda's time. Today, it is a protected monument and an active temple still in worship. The remarkable thing about this ancient temple is that the Shiva linga that is worshipped here is set in the heart of a natural cave, or 'gavi' as it is called in Kannada. Other sculptural highlights are granite monoliths carved with discs of the sun and moon, a stone umbrella, Shiva's trident and an idol of Agni, the Vedic god of fire. Every year, a rare spectacle can be witnessed at this cave-temple on the day of Makara Sankaranthi (a harvest festival in January), the sun's rays passes through the horns of the stone bull seated in front of the linga and spotlights the inner sanctum for an hour or so. A must-see for temple architecture buffs, it is also believed that sage Gautama, one of the 'Saptharishis' or 'seven great sages' in Indian lore, meditated here.

The tradition of venerating the Nandi still holds, and an annual groundnut fair is held every November. Called the 'Kadalekai Parishe', the event is a colourful one that spills onto the streets. Market, Tel: 2286 5434One of the oldest churches in Bangalore, the legendary St. Mary's Basilica is a spot of calm in the otherwise chaotic Shivajinagar. Located across Russell Market Square, the basilica had humble beginnings as a small chapel set up by a travelling Frenchman Abbe Dubois. The chapel was transformed into an ornate Gothic church by Rev LF Kleiner in 1874. The baroque structure displays vaulting arches, stained glass windows from Paris and Corinithian capitals with a profusion of bunched grapes. However, more than its architectural razzle-dazzle, it's the powerful faith that this church invokes, which gives the basilica its special reputation. Shrouded in mysterious lore, it is believed that the St. Mary here possesses miraculous powers of healing. The story goes that prayers to at the basilica once quelled a plague epidemic that struck the city. Even today, belief in the powers of the St. Mary of Shivajinagar is overwhelming. Come September, thousands of believers flock to the basilica for an annual feast, dressed in customary orange.
UlsoorOnce upon a time, Bangalore was a city of lakes. Although most of these have been lost in the quest for urban development, the Ulsoor Lake still stands as testament to the city's lake legacy. Spread over a three-kilometre radius, the origins of the Ulsoor Lake (or Halasur Lake as it was formerly known) go back to the reign of
thKempegowda II, a 16 centurychieftain of Bangalore. But the lake in its current form was built by British Commissioner, Sir Lewin Bentham Bowring. Speckled with tiny islands, the picturesque Ulsoor Lake has been cleaned up from time to time. Boat rides are offered here. There's a walkway around the lake, which is a favourite with walkers and joggers. The
