News from the Artistic Director’s Chair…

Finally! Chicago is coming to the TMP stage! I have tried for 15 years in a

row to get the rights to produce Chicago and finally the licensing company

got smart and said, “It’s time!” We have a wonderful cast of singers and

dancers who will wow you with the Bob Fosse-inspired choreography. Tick-

ets are selling fast! New York critics say "Chicago still glitters hypnotically!

Brash, buoyant and utterly irresistible!" Do not miss this award-winning

show!

I was in Ashland Oregon at the Shakespeare festival with our theater tour

this summer and a gentleman came up and asked if I was the artistic Direc-

tor of Tacoma Musical Playhouse. I was flattered! Then he said that he had

seen our recent production of Joseph and that he had seen it in New York

and London and that TMP's production was better than those productions. I

was ecstatic! I had a wonderful cast that had so much fun together onstage

as well as off. This will be one of those memorable shows for me.

Single tickets are now on sale for all shows of the 2012-13 Mainstage

Season. Individual tickets are also available for all specialty shows of the

season – including TCMT, Big Band Christmas, Dancing with the Tacoma

Stars, Spring Ladies Luncheon and Jazz@TMP. Reserve your seats early as

many performances will sell out in advance and you won’t want to miss a

single show! But don't forget...2012-13 Season Subscriptions are still availa-

ble! Season subscriptions have surpassed last year's and we haven't

even presented our first show!

In case you haven't heard the buzz, we have changed our summer show

this season to Ragtime. This past summer's audience survey voted it very

highly, so we decided to give our audience what it wants. This show is a mov-

ing tribute to the era of Ragtime music and the struggles that the Uniited

States was facing at that time. The music is glorious and of course the pro-

duction is shaping up to be first-rate.

The Tacoma Children’s Musical Theater continues to grow in popularity

with three fantastic children’s stories being presented on the TMP stage this

year. Alexander & the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day will start our

7th TCMT season this November. For teachers, reservations are being taken

for all School Group Mid-Week Matinee performances this season. See the

School Group website at www.tmp.org/groups.aspx for special instructions

and contact the Office Manager to reserve your student groups early be-

cause these performances do sell out well in advance!

You may notice some changes happening at TMP when you walk into our

auditorium. We have moved the sound booth down into the auditorium so

the sound operator gets a more realistic idea of what you all are hear-

ing. PLUS! We have a new sound board that rivals any of the professional

theaters in the area. Of course, we still need to learn to use it, but I think

you will hear a difference as the season goes on.

Our next exciting Theater Tour is taking us to the beautiful city of San

Antonio! This fall, 54 TMP patrons will join us on this sold-out tour to one of

the nation’s fastest growing, culturally significant regions. We are very excit-

ed to add San Antonio to our ever-expanding list of theater tour destina-

tions. Watch for announcements for two new exciting destinations in the

upcoming newsletters.

"Great things are happening at TMP!"

Supporting Our Theater

To everyone who supported TMP by purchasing Sum-

mer Blockbuster raffle tickets, donated gifts and vol-

unteered their time selling tickets, a much deserved

great big THANK YOU! Your donations build a better

musical theater experience for our South Puget Sound

region. Congratulations to the winners of the summer

raffle: Joan who won first prize and received a check

for $3140.50; Iris won the hand-blown technicolor

glass bowl and Becky has a unique antique horse car-

riage music box.

Also, great appreciation goes to everyone who at-

tended the Fall Fashion Show on Sunday, September

9. Lynda and Rod Pressey did a wonderful job enter-

taining our guests with stories, and the models were

lovely in their fashions provided by R&L Productions.

Thank you to the many volunteers who helped make

this event a success and to the companies who donat-

ed decadent desserts.

TMP could not accomplish all we do without our

large volunteer core. If you are interested in helping

with events, ushering, set and costume creation or

mailings, please contact the Box Office at 253-565-

6867 and let us know. We value your time and skills

and thank you for all your support of the arts in our

community.

“Entertaining Education” Summer Wrap-up and the Upcoming Year

You may think that education takes a holiday during the summer, but not at TMP. Our CampTMP summer program just wrapped up one of its most successful summers yet with a great cast of students, a wonderful staff from all over the country, and amazing parent volunteers. We finished our 2011-12 season touching the lives of over 2,500 young people in Western Wash-ington through our Educational Outreach programs both here at TMP and out in the community. That doesn’t even take into consideration those that came to see our Mainstage productions.

This upcoming year we will continue to offer the best in Performing Arts education to the youth of our community. We offer our After School Academy throughout the year, our Saturday classes, and our Winter, Spring, and Summer Break camps. In addition to these programs we also have outreach programs available to local schools and organizations. This past year had us all over the county and this year we will stretch to even more locations in Western Washington. If you know of any young people or organizations that are want to be involved in the Performing Arts, please make sure and send them our way.

For more details visit the youth education page of our website, or contact Chris Serface, Director of Edu-cation at 253-565-6867 or [email protected].
