Venice Takeaway: Ideas to Change British ArchitectureExhibition 26 February–27 April, Gallery 1, RIBA
Venice Takeaway presents the work of ten teams who travelled the world to seek inspiration and imaginative responses to contemporary issues in architecture.Launched at the British Pavilion at Venice Architecture Biennale, it charts a coursethat takes in Argentina, Brazil, China, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Russia,Thailand and the USA. The exhibition encapsulates ideas for change and lessonsfrom abroad, reminding us of the important role that observation and thinking plays in the process of design. Organised by the British Council.

Le Corbusier’s la Ville Radieuse was a grandiose plan for the future city.Created in 1924, it brought high-risebuildings, open spaces andmotorways into one harmoniousblueprint for idealised living. Eachare new towns – planned places, quite different intheir own way, but each inspired by an agenda andset of ideas of what makes a place. Based on sixinternational cities built between World War II andthe present day, this exhibition by Dutch collective,the Crimson Architectural Historians, looks at thearchitecture and socio-economic drivers thatinspired their development and the complexities of city making.

Daniel Libeskind is an architect with a global reputation for takingarchitecture to ‘places we have never been’. His acclaimed JewishMuseum, Berlin and the Imperial War Museum, Manchester are twosuch examples of a ‘radical’ architecture which is crafted with what herefers to as ‘perceptible human energy’. His projects court controversyin their risk taking, but also high praise.
