PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE25 YEARS AGO!!

Twenty five years ago exhilaration and enthusiasm by visionary people on the Peninsula established U3A Southern Peninsula. Such was the determina-tion, enthusiasm and willingness on the part of the steering committee 1989 – Jack Kane, Jill Jones, Shirley Barnes and Marj Grimmer – that U3A SP was up and running within six weeks of the first exploratory meeting. Today, we are the beneficiaries of such foresight. We plan to mark this momentous occasion during the year.

LIAISON WITH MORNINGTON PENINSULA SHIRE

You will be pleased to know (I think!) that the committee have been busy on your behalf in ensuring that U3A SP not only maintain our venues and classes but are seeking to gain more accommodation for our current classes and to have access to more venues for further classes and expansion. We wish to obtain this by not increasing our hiring costs but to negotiate more economic proposals.

Currently in liaison with U3A Hastings and U3A Mornington we are participat-ing in a Study Group with the Peninsula Shire. We have explored the issues of U3A identity within the Shire, the demographics of the area and the relevance of the Shire’s Health and Well Being Paper to local U3As. We have stressed how important it is that the members of U3As are able to continue the ben-efits of intellectual, cultural, social and physical activities free of competitive or economic pressures.

We have now established monthly meetings and now that much of our pre-liminary understandings have been stated we hope to make further progress with our goals.

INTERFAITH FESTIVAL

A Celebration of Diversity - multiculturalism, multi-faith, and indigenous history.

This celebration was held on June 8th and indeed was a true celebration of life. Participation was enthusiastic in the genuine demonstration of different prayers and the celebration of diversity through music, dance, art, film, workshops and food. It was quite an awesome sight to witness ( and participate) in singing “ With One Voice” and drumming with the Africans drummers ( drums supplied!)

The three Regional U3As - Mornington, Hastings and Southern Peninsula were presented with Order of Australia Regional Group Certificates recognis-ing their work within the Community.

U3A SP was represented by our artists and photographers and there was a steady stream of visitors to our U3A table for information and literature. An excellent day!

President Margaret Green accepting the Order of Australia Regional Group Certificate on behalf of U3A SP.

We thank the office of The Honorable Martin Dixon MP, Member for Nepean, for print-ing copies of this newsletter as a service to the community of the Southern Peninsula.

OUR OFFICE

Extra short courses and “ Let’s Go “ activities along with our regular classes have ensured that our office volunteers are kept very busy. A number of new members also have increased the administrative tasks of the Office.

AUDREY A Poem by Jim MurphyMy ageing brain is crumbling likeAn old and dried-up cheeseIncapable of holding thoughtsIt once could store with ease.I used to tag each year’s ideasWith men’s names “A” to “Z”,One year – my very best in fact - I went from “Alf” to “Fred”.

But last year was disastrous, forMy brain was badly clogged,It took until November ‘tillOne small idea was logged. An idea-less idealist likeMe, in need of luck,Could not believe that such a boon -One thought - at last had stuck.I called my idea “Aubrey” but As I began to write it,I struck a “D” instead of “B”And “Audrey” was delighted.

She danced and pranced around the room,Then hurtled through the door,I screeched and ran to catch her, butMy Audrey was no more.A rogue she is, for even worseShe took her idea too,But I am quite determined thatThe lady I’ll pursue.

The day she gets recaptured I’llPrevent her travelling far.I shall incarcerate her inMy screw-top pickle jar!So if you see my Audrey will youCall me swiftly please? You’ll recognise her readily,She reeks of stale cheese.

WAIKAREMOANA DISCOVERY TOUR NOVEMBER 2013

By: Sri Mawson

Some friends from our Wednesday walking group decided we’d like to experi-ence some walks in New Zealand. I have enjoyed numerous walks over the years in the North Island and so I suggested an itinerary in the areas I knew so well. We all met in Rotorua - Sally, Gwen, Eunice, Tony and I - on 20th November and spent the day checking out the thermal attractions. In the evening we enjoyed a cultural night of village life, dances, activities and, of course, the Hangi dinner.

We then set off by bus to the Urewera National Park and to Whirinaki Forest to spend 4 days in and around the Lake Waikaremoana area. We began with a 3 - 4 hour circuit walk through the forest of huge towering trees (it took 6 people holding hands to circle the trunk of one tree), looking down on thunder-ing waterfalls and many species of birdlife on a very scenic track. We finished the day with a 30 minute hike up to Lou’s Lookout to a spectacular view of the Panekire Bluff and the Waikaremoana Lake which covers 25 sq kms.

Our lodge for the next 3 nights was situated on the shores of one of the hydroelectricity lakes which, although basic, was ideal for our needs with hot showers and delicious meals cooked for us by a very competent Maori chef. Lunches and snacks were provided for the day’s walk and were enjoyed at many of the scenic rest stops along the way.

Day 2 found us climbing a moderate gradient of 600 meters (from 1,200 to 1,800 meters) to the Panekire Bluff. Stunning views of this huge lake, moss covered tree trunks and stately tree ferns, made one feel there was no end to the photo opportunities of this natural beauty.

Later that afternoon we were taken to a local Maori Meeting House for an informal session with the Maori elder and his son. They told us much of their

culture and invited questions from us which they seemed to appreciate. This family tried to live the traditional Maori life in their village.

Day 3 was another delightful day walking through Beech forests to Lake Wai-kareti, about 900 meters above sea level and free from introduced aquatic plants and pests. Some of these islands are being used to relocate the native kiwi birds which are an endangered species.

Day 4 included a 15 minute jet boat ride across part of the lake to the start of the day’s walk through dense rain forest. Large areas of the rain forest were cordoned off with electric fences to protect the native kiwi in a Recovery Program. The track in some sections was extremely muddy, the first mud we’d encountered in our 4 days of walking, but with some heavy recent rain this was inevitable, and we were up to our ankles in mud in no time. However, we soon for-got about that when we reached the end of the 4 day walk to be greeted by one of our great guides, Jamie. He had prepared a celebratory afternoon tea with cham-pagne, tea/coffee, cakes and our favourite Whittaker’s New Zealand chocolate !

That same day we continued on our way by bus to the Mt. Tongariro area, where we stayed 2 nights at the well known Tongariro Chateau, in order to have a rest day before tackling the main challenge of the whole holiday - The Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Our rest day turned out to be a very wet one but we still managed a one hour walk to the thundering Taranaki Falls. We were very pleased to return to our comfortable Chateau accommodation.

Thanks Sri.

(Fellow trekkers – Sally, Gwen, Eunice and Tony – wish to extend their sincere thanks to Sri for her time and effort in putting this walk together, for bookings on line, and for her enthusiastic encouragement that ‘we could do it’ !!)

Would you like to become more physically active?

Would you be interested in participating in a research study?

The National Ageing Research Institute is inviting volunteers to join the INDIGO study, a physical activity research program. INDIGO is investigating whether individual goal-setting and support from a peer mentor will help inactive older adults with

memory concerns to become more physically active.

We are looking for volunteers aged 60 – 80 years who are worried about their memory or have mild memory problems. Participants also need to be doing less than 60 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity per week.

The study involves three assessments at NARI within 12 months which include questionnaires for memory and other health factors, as well as physical fitness tests.

If you are interested in being involved, please phone Ellen Gaffy on 8387 2296.

This research has been approved by the Melbourne Health Mental Health Research Ethics Committee

(Editors note: this valuable research is supported by the President and committee. According to the organisers the study involves three assessments at the National Ageing Research Institute (NARI) in Parkville within 12 months. It includes questionnaires for memory and other health factors, as well as physical fitness tests. All participants will be provided with a home-based physical activity program, such as walking. Half of the participants will be provided with goal-setting training and support from a volunteer mentor.)
