Fernandeno Indians Celebrate The Winter Solstice

Omicron - From a Hospital Perspective

The Fernandeno Tataviam band of Mission Indians held a Winter Solstice Sunrise Ceremony Tuesday at the Chatsworth Nature Preserve.

Members of the Chumash tribe and elected officials including Mayor Eric Garcetti and Senator Henry Stern attended the traditional ceremony.

The Winter Solstice is the shortest day of the year, and the longest night of the year, when the Sun is at its lowest daily elevation in the sky.

The Solstice ceremony included ceremonial songs and blessings from tribal elders, a prayer circle and tour of the nature preserve.

The Fernandeno Tatviam Bank of Mission Indians is a sovereign tribe of Tataveaveat (Los Angeles County) with historic ties to Mission San Fernando and pre-mission ties to the Simi, Santa Clarita, Antelope and San Fernando Valleys.

COMMUNITY

As 2021 wraps up, I want to share some successes, challenges and 2022 priorities for the West Valley. This year, homelessness and COVID-19 were both urgent priorities, but I also focused on economic development and infrastructure. Public safety remains a top priority and is a part of everything we do— next year will offer opportunities to better resource LAPD and implement innovative public safety measures such as alternative dispatch for unarmed interventionists to address non-violent crises.

On COVID-19, together we’ve made important progress. As vaccines became available, I helped bring the second largest COVID-19 vaccine site in the city to Pierce College, where 80,000 people got their vaccinations. My office also assisted in setting up testing at the Anthem lot. As always, I urge everyone who is eligible for vaccination or a booster to get it, to protect yourself and everyone around you.

The pandemic hit our local businesses hard. To provide some urgent assistance, I authored legislation to extend entitlements at no cost, streamline permit and other business processes, remove overly-burdensome requirements and suspend others. Common sense examples included not requiring businesses to maintain valet parking when onsite dining was at an all-time low and not citing businesses for putting up large non-permitted signs indicating that they were open during the pandemic. All of these measures complemented the massive emergency recovery loans and grants that the City, State and Federal Government were distributing as a lifeline for workers and businesses. My team and I worked hard to connect local businesses and workers to critical resources.

Also, I spearheaded a Food and Beverage Working Group of local business owners to craft ideas that would help them get

Bob Blumenfield: 2021 Wrap UpGuest Editorial:

through the crisis and also push for more common sense changes to make it easier to start and run a business in LA. In 2022, I will work to make the best of these ideas permanent, including the “Al Fresco program” which enabled many parking lots and other non-traditional spaces to be used for outdoor dining.

During the crises, one of our most important accomplishments was helping renters stay housed. In addition to implementing one of the strongest eviction moratoriums in the country, the City helped process $535 million in state and city rental assistance for over 40,000 Los Angeles households through our Emergency Renters Assistance Program. Specifically in the West Valley, I used all the communications and outreach vehicles I had to help get the

word out. Over $17 million in direct aid was distributed in the district I represent (among the highest per capita), and while more must be done for renters and Angelenos with mortgages, I’m proud of the help we have been able to provide thus far.

On homelessness, we brought hundreds of people indoors. We created enough interventions in the Third District to shelter all the local unhoused residents who were counted in the 2020 Homeless Count. In February, we opened The Willows in Canoga Park, an 80-person Bridge Housing program. In the summer, I welcomed unhoused people from

West Valley streets into our two brand new Cabin Communities, one behind my District Office in Reseda and another in a Metro parking lot in Tarzana, providing up to 250 more beds. We also expanded Safe Parking programs for folks living in their vehicles. We opened up more than 125 hotel rooms in two local hotels, housed folks through LAHSA’s rapid rehousing voucher program, provided funding to a local non-profit for sheltering homeless victims of domestic violence, partnered with Share! to get people placed directly from the streets into multiple roommate arrangements, and helped reunite a few unsheltered folks with family members.

To help move people into permanent housing, we are converting the two “Project Roomkey” hotels we leased into Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH). And ground was broken on three more PSH projects: Palm Vista Apartments in Winnetka, Bell Creek Creek Apartments in Canoga Park, and the Reseda Theater Senior Housing project. All 195 new units will open in 2022.

We’ve also expanded lifesaving services by growing our innovative drug treatment program with Providence Cedar

• Think about those New Year’s resolutions..think you’d like to scarf a Snickers bar? You’d have to run more than two miles or work out for at least 20 minutes on a Stairmaster, according to recent reports.

• Learn from the mistakes of others - you can never live long enough to make all of them yourself!

• Curiosity is an instinct of infinite scope - on one hand it leads to listening behind closed doors; on the other, it leads to the discovery of America.

• Stood in line at the COVID testing center for three hours today. Two hours in I realized it was actually the line to sit on Santa’s lap, but I couldn’t just leave at that point.

• As Jesse Jackson said (especially true at this season): Your children need your presence more than your presents!

• Did you hear about the guru who refused to let his dentist freeze his jaw because he wanted to transcend dental medication.

• Checking old copies of our papers we found an ad for Security Pacific National Bank whose ad from yesteryear read, “We want to be with you for life!” Oh well...

Dignity Health - Northridge Hospital Medical Center (NHMC) has received a legacy gift in the amount of $1,937,556 from The Schroer Trust to help support patient care needs.

Since 1955, NHMC has received the support of community members who have contributed significantly to the hospital, equipment, service lines, and key programs of the hospital. The Northridge Hospital Foundation Legacy Society recognizes and honors individuals who name NHMC in their wills or trusts, or as a beneficiary of deferred gifts.

“It is a pleasure to be able to give to Northridge Hospital,” says Ernie Schroer III, son of Ernest and Pat Schroer. “I appreciate everyone’s efforts to help others.”

The Schroer Trust was established as a Charitable Remainder UniTrust and managed under the NHMC Foundation. Upon Pat’s passing earlier this year, the remainder of the trust was distributed to Northridge Hospital Foundation.

“The incredible generosity of the Schroer family is a true testament to the essential role that members of our local community play in helping Northridge Hospital continue to serve patients and their families with high-quality, compassionate care,” says Brian Hammel, NHMC Foundation President. “This transformational gift will provide us a future filled with hope and promise, and has the capacity to positively affect our patients and communities for years to come.”

Many of us will continue working at home in 2022, as companies realize the value and the savings. How can you make your new year more productive when faced with distractions such as children, laundry, and the refrigerator?

Sticking to a schedule is good for health, wellness and productivity, and the start of a new year is the perfect time to form great habits. Resolve to adhere to a daily routine with the following tips and tricks:

• Write it down: The act of writing things down can help reinforce priorities. Keep a list of short- and long-term goals, events and meetings. Be sure to check items off your list as you complete them. Doing so can help you stay motivated.

• Get a good watch: Keep yourself accountable with a good watch. The line-up of Edifice watches by Casio are not only stylish, they contain must-have productivity features, such as multiple alarms, as well as countdown timers displaying the remaining time until the alarm beeps. They also connect with your smartphone and offer cool, sync-up features that help you keep your essentials organized, such as “phone finder.” If you prefer a sportier timepiece, Pro Trek watches offer similar alarm

Still Working from Home in 2022?How to Be More Productive

features, along with step counters and sensor technology like altimeters, compasses and more, all of which are great for hikes, and other outdoor activities.

• Keep it consistent: Keep both bedtime and the time you awake consistent day-to-day. Doing so can mean better quality slumber so you will be more alert, energized and ready to tackle tasks. Consistent meal times can also be beneficial, helping you maintain your energy throughout the day, manage metabolism and avoid hunger.

• Don’t overdo it: It can be tempting to try to schedule more tasks and to-dos into your day than is actually realistic. Doing so however can leave you feeling constantly stressed, and always in catch-up mode. Be sure your schedule offers you sufficient time to actually complete tasks and travel between appointments.

• Practice self-care: Downtime is essential. Whatever self-care looks like to you, be sure to build it into your schedule, whether that means relaxing with a good book, getting together with friends or working out.

Make 2022 the year you finally create and maintain a well-balanced schedule. With wearable tech and smart habits, you’ll be more inclined to stick with the program.

During the holidays, the name of the game - besides shopping - seems to be celebrating. Whether it is celebrating your particular holiday, celebrating New Years or celebrating friends and family, it is party time!

There is nothing better than surrounding ourselves with loved ones, no matter what time of year it is. The most important thing is that we all have a good time and return home safely.

Towards that end, We Save Lives searched the internet for the best tips on how to be responsible hosts and how to minimize the danger once our guests leave our home.

If you are one of those who feel safe hosting and attending parties in this COVID-dominated environment then read on.

RESPONSIBLE HOST TIPS FOR PARTY PLANNING

* Have designated drivers. Plan to have sober drivers at your party who can escort folks home. Volunteer to be a sober driver at someone else’s party.

* Plan ahead to get keys. Prepare a basket or bowl where all of your guests can leave their keys. You are the only person who can retrieve the keys. This way, you can examine all of your guests before they leave.

* Have a cab fare fund. Having available cash to pay cab fare for your guests if they need it reduces the stress on you. If you can’t afford to pay for it yourself, ask your guests to pitch in a few bucks on your invitation.

* Purchase non-alcoholic beverages. Always have soft drinks, juices, and other non-alcoholic b e v e r a g e s available for those guests who are driving or choose not to drink.

* Plan to be sober. Be a responsible host. Limiting your own alcohol intake will allow you to better determine if a guest is sober enough to drive at the end of the night.

SERVING DRINKS

* Don’t serve alcohol to minors. The legal drinking age is 21 and, as a host, it is your responsibility to make sure minors aren’t drinking.

Celebrating the New Year Safely

* Don’t force drinks on your guests. Also, don’t rush to refill their glasses when empty. Be a smart host; push the food, not the alcohol on your guests.

* Food is the key. Always serve food with alcohol. It is proven that food can help counter the effects of alcohol.

* Stop serving alcohol one hour before the party ends. Serve only coffee, tea and non- alcoholic beverages as the party comes to a close. As the host or hostess, it is your responsibility to help your guests get home safely, so limit the amount of alcohol served toward the end of the pa r ty as guests prepare to leave or go home.

DEVELOP A HOUSE POLICY

1. Hosts, co-hosts and friends will take good care of our guests and protect them from the effects of misusing alcohol, not only because it is our legal obligation under the social host liability laws, but because it is also morally imperative.

2. A good host will not encourage excessive drinking.

3. I (we) will be mindful of serving individual guests high alcohol volume drinks (such as Long Island Ice Tea), no more than two should be served to a guest.

4. Post the signs of visible intoxication.

5. Minor guests/spouses/dates will not be served alcohol.

6. Guests will respect our home and other guests or they will be asked to leave.

7. I (we) will not “push” alcoholic drinks.

8. I (we) will offer food and non-alcoholic beverages (“spacer” drinks between alcoholic drinks).

9. No alcohol will be served the last hour of the party.

10. I (we) will make every effort to keep intoxicated guests from driving, including: offering non- alcoholic beverages and snacks to encourage them to stay longer, providing alternative transportation, and arranging overnight accommodations.

By Katie SterlingSeeing as how it was my

birthday this week, I decided to do what any grown woman would do…I took myself to see cartoon animals sing pop songs.

That’s right, needing a break from the seriousness of Oscar contenders and the endless stream of Hallmark holiday films, Sing 2 was the cinematic choice to celebrate another year around the sun. While I couldn’t help but laugh as the crowd of seven-year-olds and I tucked into our Kid’s Packs during the mid-day matinee, Sing 2 proved to be mindlessly entertaining and frankly, just a spot of fun.

Following the same lovable characters from the first film, Sing 2 centers on koala Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey) as he leads his troupe of performers to

create a stage performance that will get them the starring act in Redshore City.

The only catch is that he has promised sly Mr. Crystal (Bobby Canavale), the head honcho of the glitzy city, that the most reclusive rock star Clay Calloway (Bono) will be joining the production. As the menagerie of musicians set out to fulfill this impossible promise, hijinks and hilarity ensue.

While the plot drives the characters on their own personal journeys, the film connects them all through toe-tapping musical numbers peppered generously

Sing 2 Hits a High Note for All Ages throughout the storyline. As *ahem* an older member of the audience, it’s entertaining to not only connect the celebrities to the cartoon animals they voice, but chuckle at their given choice of song. After all, perhaps one of the best parts of the film is a montage of stage editions that jump from a slug singing Drake to a gazelle belting Adele and everything in between.

Sing 2 is not only musically entertaining but visually stunning in the craftsmanship of the characters and the minute details of every scene.

Kids will no doubt love the theatrics of the film but adults will chuckle at the animated world that mirrors our own. While watching the film, it’s hard not to focus on the background or the minor characters as details are so

intricate and perfectly executed to make this cartoon world truly come to life.

Overall, it’s a sweet movie, if at times a bit frenzied. While not as strong as perhaps the first installment, you really can’t hate on such a cheerful movie without coming across as a monster.

Calabasas to Post Vaccine Requirements

population have higher numbers.”All staff and all visitors at

West Hills must be vaccinated.“The vaccine is your

insurance against getting super sick,” explained David. “If you get Omicron it’s going to be like a cold, not severe enough to warrant hospitalization. We haven’t had a single patient admitted that’s vaccinated.”

He said however, that the Delta variant is different. “Not to scare people in to getting vaccinated, but... people who got Delta and went on a ventilator never got better. Delta is still a dominant strain and it’s bad,” he cautioned.

Being vaccinated also means that it’s safe to come to the hospital if you have medical issues. “We’re not seeing as many cases of advanced disease where people were afraid to go to the doctor or the hospital because of COVID,” said David. “We’re now seeing them in a regular pattern. Acuity in the ER is not as much. This is a new normal we can manage.”

Even with a post-holiday surge David says the hospital is ready. “We had one after Thanksgiving, we’ll probably have one after Christmas,” he said. “Those will be symptomatic - but can be treated as outpatients. Our biggest concern is those

that aren’t getting boosted for whatever reason.”

He stressed that access to vaccines is not a problem. Retail pharmacies can administer them on the spot. “If you have two doses of Pfizer, you should probably get the third from Moderna. Mix and match for the best protection,” David explained. “There’s no risk to doing that. Buy yourself a little insurance.”

He stressed that if you’re having people over for the holidays you should be boosted. Have people tested before they come over. If you have the sniffles - stay home - as much from the risk of spreading a cold or flu as COVID.

David said that a good idea is to get tested right before you come to the party. At-home rapid tests are available at most pharmacies (though it takes a lot of phone calls to find a supply as they are in high demand). “It’s $20 for two tests,” David said. “ It’s a great strategy this holiday, especially if someone at home is at great risk.” He said that by January there should be an unlimited supply of at-home tests to deliver to your house. “We can’t do that for flu; I wish we could,” he said.

He stressed that no matter what, the hospital is in a perpetual state of diligence, “We’re confident we can handle whatever comes our way.”

Preparing for an Omicron Surge(Continued from page 1)

The City of Calabasas will begin posting signs Monday, December 27, mandating that proof of vaccination will be required to enter any city facility. This includes City Hall, the Tennis & Swim Center, Senior Center, Library, Creekside and Juan de Anza Park (inside). Those over 18 must show a vaccination card or proof of negative test within 72 hours.

Given the arrival of the Omicron variant, as well as COVID-19 cases increasing 47% since Thanksgiving, California has implemented an indoor mask mandate statewide.

The mandate, which started December 15 and intends to cover the holiday season until January 15, requires everyone to mask up indoors, regardless of vaccination status.

Additionally, anyone unvaccinated attending a major event must show a negative antigen test within a day of the event or a negative PCR test within two days. Los Angeles County currently still holds the mask mandate in place prior to this updated mandate.

Rx Resolutions: Way to Improve Your Health in 2022While diet and exercise

resolutions typically top New Year’s lists, experts say that focusing a few of your resolutions on forming good habits relating to your pharmacy routine can improve your overall health.

Susan Peppers, RPh, vice president, Express Scripts Pharmacy, suggests these resolutions to make the most of your pharmacy care.Resolve to…ask more questions

Many of us are hesitant to speak up when we have questions about prescribed medications or therapies. Don’t be! Pharmacists have clinical expertise and can play an important role in your whole health. At Express Scripts Pharmacy, pharmacists are available 24/7 to answer questions or talk through any other health issues you may be experiencing.

Resolve to…never miss a doseThe best way to see

improvement in both chronic and short-term conditions is to take medication as prescribed — the right dose at the right time in the right way. Try using a pill container or a dose reminder or taking your medication as part of your daily routine, such as brushing your teeth. Talk to your pharmacist about the best time to take your medication.

You should also consider ongoing home delivery - like that provided by Express Scripts Pharmacy - so you never run out of medication due to a missed pharmacy trip. Express Scripts Pharmacy customers can also enroll eligible medications in an automatic refill program. Your prescriptions will be refilled at the right time, so your medicine will always be on hand.

Resolve to…take your

medications safelyTaking medication the

wrong way or without knowledge of their effects can be dangerous. Read and understand the instructions printed on your prescription label, so you can be sure you’re taking your medicine exactly as intended. For example, taking certain medications on an empty stomach if you’re supposed to take it with a meal can reduce their effectiveness.

You’ll also want to be sure you don’t mix your medication with certain other drugs or alcohol, or even engage in specific activities, like driving, if the label warns you against doing so.

Resolve to…clean out your medicine cabinet

Many people find they’re more likely to take medications properly if they have a well-organized medicine cabinet. Go through and properly dispose of expired medications or those you’re no longer taking. For more information on discarding expired medications, visit express-scripts.com/askyourpharmacist.

Resolve to…check-in with your doctor

Your health can change, and your prescriptions should change along with it. Schedule time at least once annually to go over everything you’re being prescribed. It’s a good chance to talk to your doctor about what’s working, what’s not and what might need adjustments. In turn, keeping all medications at a single pharmacy when possible allows your pharmacist to have the most accurate information to help keep you safe from drug interactions or medication issues. Be sure your physician knows which pharmacy you use.

Resolve to…update your insurance informationThe beginning of a new

year is the perfect time to ensure you have updated insurance information accessible in case you need to reference it. Replace old cards with new ones as soon as you can to save time and reduce confusion when filling prescriptions.

By Janey M. RifkinAlarm bells have

gone off now that we know the Omicron variant has shown up – apparently here, there, and everywhere. The good news, according to scientists at the various vaccine makers, is this variant has so far produced few severe cases of Covid-19. Existing vaccines, including boosters, may prove capable of protecting against the worst outcomes including hospitalization and death caused by Omicron, even if they prove less effective in preventing infections.

The plan is the same: Getting vaccinated, including the booster shot, is the only protection known at present, and it is vitally important to combat the new variant which is alarmingly equipped with as many as 50 mutations. In Europe where 67% of people are vaccinated, a turf war between two variants is taking place. There, Omicron is landing in the middle of another surge, that of Delta, which has created havoc as well in our country.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

An early patient diagnosed with Omicron resides in Los Angeles County. Researchers caution drawing similarities at this point in time since the stricken among the South African population is younger, on average, than many Western countries and has a relatively low rate of vaccination. It is too early to correlate data regarding similarities, country to country, or patient to patient just yet.

So far, the WHO has declared five variants of concern and given them names from the Greek alphabet including Alpha and Delta. Beta, whose first known case was also from South Africa,

Virus Variant Right in Our Own BackyardInformation & Straight Talk

weakened under the impact of vaccines. It appears the next phase of the pandemic hinges on what Omicron’s mutations mean. Extremely worrisome is how the accumulations of mutations evade antibody protection. A tentative conclusion is the Omicron is highly transmissible, potentially more than the Delta variant.

Sinai and Tarzana Treatment Center (TTC) so a homeless person in the ER has immediate access to a bed and appropriate treatment with TTC. I also partnered with the local nonprofit About My Father’s Business, who’ve been helping with outreach and leading my new storage pilot program that helps people rent nearby storage units to put their excess stuff before moving into housing rather than leaving belongings on the sidewalks.

After creating new housing and services, I designated limited areas in the West Valley “off limits” to encampments, the first part of the City to get these protections. Under the newly revised Municipal Code section

41.18, after extensive outreach and offers of housing, the City may ensure safe passage through critical corridors--like the Corbin and De Soto underpasses--and also create other ‘no-encampment’ zones in sensitive areas. With both 41.18 restrictions and new housing opportunities, we are making progress.

Pacific Theatre Chatsworth to be Demo’dThe Pacific Theatre on Winnetka Avenue in Chatsworth, owned

by Arclight parent Decurion Corporation, is going to be demolished and an industrial complex built in its place.

The 140,000-square-foot theatre was built in 1998 with 21 screens on the site of the old Winnetka Drive-In, which opened in 1975 and closed in 1996. The current theatre was completely renovated in 2016 with 13 screens operating. It closed in March 2020 with the pandemic.

In April of this year Decurion closed 300 of their Pacific and Arclight location, including Arclight at the Sherman Oaks Galleria.

Plans for the Chatsworth location call for construction of a complex totaling 273,500 square feet.

The closure of the Pacific Theatre leaves some options for dedicated movie-goers in the west valley, including Regal Calabasas at The Commons, AMC Promenade 16 (which will move to Westfield Topanga’s new complex when completed), AMC Fallbrook 7 at Fallbrook Square, and Laemmle Town Center 5 in Encino.

Start the New Year Right!Dump Your Old Oil and Paint

The City of Calabasas will kick off 2022 with a collection event on Saturday, January 8, from 10 am to 2 pm.

Clean out your garage for a fresh start to the new year and bring your used motor oil and water based paint to Calabasas City Hall, 100 Civic Center Way, to be properly and safely recycled. Acceptable items include used oil, oil filters, antifreeze, automobile batteries and latex paint.

Not accepted will be oil-based paint, spray paint, hazardous material or business waste.

The event is presented by the City of Calabasas Public Works Department. For more information and a complete list of acceptable items visit cityofcalabasas.com.

Demand Experience - Expect ExcellenceBuying or Selling... We Make Your Dreams Come True!Iconic Sebastian

Pyramid Building Demo’d

The Sebastian International headquarters, left, in its heyday, with the iconic pyramic entry designed after one of the shampoo bottles.

The building at DeSoto and Erwin has recently been razed, below.

The former Sebastian International headquarters building at DeSoto and Erwin featured a pyramid entryway built into the building.

Rumor is that the pyramid echoed the shape of one of the hair care company’s shampoo bottles.

John Sebastian and Geri Cusenza started the company in the 70’s to “take a generation

from flower power to fearless hair fashion.” Sebastian was founded on this principle of fearlessness, and perhaps that is where the iconic pyramid idea came from.

The building was erected in 1990 and served as Sebastian’s headquarters until the company was purchased by Wella in 1993.

California Home Builders will construct another “Q”

apartment building on the site, with 358 units and ground floor office and retail.

California Home Builders, based in Canoga Park, also owns the large “Q” apartment building on Topanga Canyon Blvd. across from The Village, and the “Q Variel” at Variel and Erwin in Warner Center. No construction start date is known.
