What is the 9-Block inTEGRATE platform?

inTEGRATE: Platform at a glance

WHAT it is: inTEGRATE is a Performance and Talent Management software platform that measures employee Planning, Performance and Potential

WHO uses it: The platform is generally used by salaried personnel, although any employee can be loaded on the system provided they have the discretion to set personal goals and measures, their job has defined roles and their job is mapped to a competency model

HOW it works: People set their own goals and measures and evaluate themselves against a competency model. Their manager reviews their work and may modify it depending on their own goals and measures. A review meeting is held, discussion takes place, and final goals, measures, and competence are posted. At the end of a review period, performance to goals is evaluated, a 9-Block rating is generated, and the process repeats itself

WHAT you learn: People learn what their manager thinks important, what is achievable in a review period, how to measure it, and what is necessary for career growth.

Managers learn what their direct reports think important, what capability gaps prevent direct reports from achieving objectives, and which direct reports are capable of more responsibility and future promotion.

Leaders learn why a group or individual performs well or poorly, who are the high-potential players, what is the status of company bench strength, what capability gaps affect performance, and where to focus recruitment or development investments based on aggregate capability gaps

WHY it’s better: The review process takes less time and is less burdensome to managers because individuals are responsible for their own reviews and career development.

• It drives engagement and performance because individual responsibility causes a sense of ownership.

• It provides actionable data to leadership because the 9-Block foundation measures both current performance and future potential.

• It accelerates execution because it becomes a vehicle for leadership directives to reach the job level and measure an individual’s response to those directives

PLATFORM MODULES

The 9-Block platform is based on the concept of employee responsibility for their own job performance and career development. Therefore, it is assumed that the individual employee completes all modules before the manager reviews their self-assessment.

This approach accomplishes 3 things: 1. it gives employees a sense of job and career ownership 2. it greatly reduces the time a manager spends doing performance reviews during the

review period 3. it provides a sense of collaboration and shared mindset regarding the employee’s goals,

development, and career trajectory.

Here are examples of inTEGRATE platform modules.

Goal or Measures/Metrics

The employee adds goals or measures by going to the ‘New Goal’ section, selecting the appropriate role (accountability area), typing the goal or measure in the space provided, and checking the Next Year box to the right. At the end of the review period, the employee reviews the goals, indicates “Yes” if it was accomplished, “No” if it was not, or, “In-Process” if the goal was not completed.

If they would like to comment on the goal or explain why it was not accomplished, they may do so in the Comments field. (It is not a requirement; merely an option).

Competence

Poor performance is often due to the fact that jobs can grow faster than people. Due to new technology, rapid growth, or company changes, a job may require more capability than the incumbents possess. This gap between talent required and talent available is often the cause of sub-optimal performance. Leadership sets a job’s competence requirements and maps employees against those same standards. Talent gaps often appear.

The 9-Block Competency module which defines these Talent gaps looks like this:

Performance Rating

There is a description of each of the Performance Ratings and the performance expectations for A-players, B-players, and C-players in each 9-Block box.

The reviewer clicks on one of the 9 boxes and a separate window will open. Descriptions of what is At Standard, Below Standard, and Above Standard for both the Performance and the Competency side of the 9-Block are shown to explain how each level is defined.

In the lower left corner, the manager can override the employee’s 9-block rating if they wish to do so. They just highlight the tool generated rating and type in the new rating. Salary, promotion and other decisions are based on this final rating.
