In 1735, George II, the King of England and Elector of Hanover, founded the State Stud at Celle (a royal stable). He purchased stallions suitable for all-purpose work in agriculture and in harness, as well as for breeding cavalry mounts. The local mares were refined with Holsteiner, Thoroughbred and Cleveland Bay, Neapolitan, Andalusian, Prussian, and Mecklenburg stock. By the end of the 18th century, the Hanoverian had become a high-class coach horse.

In 1844, an English law was passed that only allowed stallions that were passed by a Royal commission to be used for breeding purposes. In 1867, breeders started a society aimed at producing a coach and military horse, with the first stud book being published in 1888. Over time, the breed has been adapted to meet changing needs. When the demand for Calvary horses declined at the end of World War I in 1918, the breed was adapted to be used for farm work, as well as riding and carriage work by allowing the selective addition of draft horse blood into the line. As tractors began replacing horses on farms after the end of World War II in 1945, the breed was once again adapted to meet a growing demand for sporting horses.

Thoroughbreds were used to further refine the breed; occasionally an Anglo-Arabian or Trakehner stallion was used. The key to the success of the Hanoverian has been the rigorous selection of breeding stock, a large breed population, and the breeders' willingness to adapt to changes in demand over time.

The American Hanoverian Society, Inc. (AHS) was incorporated in 1978 to establish, maintain and operate a non-profit association of breeders, owners and friends for the promotion and preservation of the Hanoverian horse on the North American continent. Few breeds have such well-kept records, allowing the breeders to trace bloodlines over many generations, improving their chances to find the best stallion-mare match. The current aim of the breeders today is to create a noble, versatile horse with light, elastic, and ground-covering gaits. Whenever necessary, outside blood is brought in to improve the horse. The strict selection ensures that Hanoverians are athletic and good jumpers, for show jumping and eventing, and have the special gaits needed for dressage. In the 2008 Olympics, all the dressage medals went to riders on Hanoverian horses.

The History of Dressage The word "dressage" comes from the French word meaning "training." The practice of dressage traces its origins as far back as ancient Greece, where Greek soldiers trained their horses for battle. Later, dressage was used on the medieval battlefields of Europe and as a form of art and entertainment in the courts of Renaissance nobility. Cavalry officers in the modern military also practiced dressage as recently as the 1940's. From these traditions, we get our modern dressage competitions.
