Feb. 10, 2020

The Western Society of Periodontology (WSP) has a longstanding reputation as an organization

dedicated to supporting the education and advancement of all dental team members—periodontists,

restorative dentists, and dental hygienists. With the ultimate goal of improving patient outcomes, the

WSP has been the fastest growing Periodontal organization in America. In the last four years, through-

out the West Coast, the WSP has sold out some of the most highly regarded dental hygiene meetings in

the country. Record numbers of periodontists, general dentists and dental hygienists have attended due to the

quality of these team focused, clinically relevant programs. On the heels of this success, the WSP is

joining with the Nevada Dental Hygienists’ Association to launch the First Annual Western Region

Dental Hygiene Symposium in Las Vegas, July 31- August 2, 2020.

I am honored to serve as Chair of the Advisory Committee for this new symposium along with many

well-known dental hygienists, such as Kathleen Hodges, RDH, MS; Susan Wingrove, RDH; and Tricia

Osuna, RDH, BSDH, FAADH, among others. Our aim is to provide high-quality, evidence-based

courses with an emphasis on practical implementation—an approach proven very popular among

all clinicians, not just dental hygienists.

The event will include both periodontist speakers, including Thomas Kepic, DDS, MSD and Larry

Ambrose, DDS and general dentists like William Paveletz and Arash Hakhamian as well as dental

hygienist speakers, such as myself, Jodi Deming, RDH, MS; Michelle Strange, RDH, BHS, MSDH, MS;

Osuna; and Ms. Wingrove, to name just a few. Along with these lectures, we are excited to offer an

abundance of hands-on workshops.

We are all united in our mission to improve the periodontal health of patients across the United States.

Offering this type of engaging and rigorous education can make the difference in the quality of care

provided by oral health professionals. As such, we’d love to partner with you to make the Annual

Western Region Dental Hygiene Symposium a success.

We invite you to attend this inaugural event and help make history in the dental profession.

I look forward to seeing you in Las Vegas.

Warm Regards,

Anna M. Pattison

I know that stress from my own experience. Around me, capable students were extremely anxious. And some were failing the exam, which made me realize that we weren’t to blame. That’s when I realized, “why don’t we have something better?” The books are boring, the LIVE review courses are too far from me. That’s how StudentRDH was born. And I knew that StudentRDH had to be revolutionary. Now, every year, StudentRDH serves thousands of students and helps them pass various dental hygiene board exams. My goal is to provide you with everything that you need, so you can pass with con-fidence. Thousands of students pass every year with StudentRDH. This is the MOST efficient way to study. Our system is perfect if you want to: • Study at your own pace • Use your phone or computer • Practice the mock exams that replicate the actual boards.Course Highlights:• We have a 99% success rate• Every year, thousands of students pass with StudentRDH• The feedback is incredible• You get everything you need to study in an organized way• You will become confident• 100% of users say they will recommend StudentRDH• Money back if you fail or free extension until you passAchieving Patient Compliance in Home Care Heather Kelley, RDH, MSDHCourse Description: Achieving optimal oral health for our periodontally involved patients is not just the practitioner’s job, but we must also depend on our patient’s oral home care routines and compliance. This course will discuss strategies for deciding continuing care intervals based on utilizing assessments appro-priately, considering the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) guidelines of periodontal classification, and understanding the microbiome of the oral cavity. After we have decided how often we will see our patients, how will we achieve patient compliance? Next we will discuss oral hygiene instruction related to how we administer the instruction, how the patient retains the

information, and how we document. It makes a difference. Lastly, not every patient is the same, so we must tailor the home care regimen recommendations. Based on research and specific patient needs, we will discuss what types of modalities to recommend. Learning Objectives:• Identify appropriate continuing care intervals • Strategize an effective approach to professional oral hygiene instruction• Deliver individualized home care recommendations based on patient needsPrognosis for the Periodontally Compromised ToothThomas J. Kepic, DDS, MSDCourse Description:A Historical Perspective Along With Short and Long-Term Follow up of Cases. Establishing an ac-curate periodontal prognosis is paramount to case success. Prognosis is often thought of as being “static,” established once, and never to change. However, proper periodontal therapy can alter a tooth’s prognosis, if done in time. This course will show both short and long-term cases where prognosis has changed during therapy.Learning Objectives:• Identifying the clinical factors used in assigning prognosis.• Understanding the historical research that leads to the modern day concept of prognosis.• Defining the new concept of periodontal diseases and host susceptibility as factors used in determining prognosis.Change Your Thoughts and Improve Your OutcomesAn Update on Protocols, Products and Treatment Options Tricia Osuna, RDH, BSDH, FAADH Course Description:Updated protocols assist us in determining our patient’s specific needs. As we move towards a more collaborative profession, we need to embrace these updates to identify those needs. We are presented with continuous challenges of new advances in products and technology and their use in dentistry and are in need information to determine when and how to add them into our armamentaria. As professionals providing health services, our perception of product use along with protocols needs to be discussed with our team as well as the interdisciplinary referrals we have. The process of care (assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, implementation, evaluation and documentation) requires a comprehension of protocols, products and treatment options and how they are to be utilized. Learning Objectives:• Modify diagnosis assistance with the team and rationale for changes in assessment forms and diagnostic tools • Distinguish which new-to-market products should be brought into your practice • Integrate materials and products for a variety of uses in the dental office from infection control, dental hygiene therapy, oral cancer screening, patient communication and instrumentation • Develop effective communication with patients and assist in the business of the dental practice • Formulate strategies that incorporate efficiency in patient treatment for more productive schedulingAlltransonics: The 411 on How to Master Magneto andPiezo Ultrasonic TechnologiesNoel Paschke, RDH, MSCourse Description:There are two types of ultrasonic technologies, magneto and piezo. Their clinical techniques dif-fer in three areas: water control, tip-to-tooth angulation and active surface areas. This hands-on “playshop” allows participate to try both technologies and receive coaching on their clinical tech-nique to create healthier patients, whether using magneto or piezo.Learning Objectives:• Compare and contrast three differences in magneto and piezo ultrasonics: water control, tip-to-tooth angulation and active surface areas.• Select appropriate inserts and tips based on patients’ clinical conditions.• Demonstrate proper water control and power settings for both magneto and piezo.• Activate the magneto and piezo units demonstrating the most effective tip-to-tooth angulation.Update on Advanced Periodontal Instrumentation with New Advanced Technique VideosAnna Matsuishi Pattison, RDH, MSCourse Descripiton: In the past five years significant developments in new high-tech devices, new hand instruments and ultrasonic tips have changed the way we teach and practice.
