Transcript of WEST SIDE STORY March 2012 - West Middle...
Dear Parents and Guardians,
The school year is flying by, and we find ourselves leading up to spring break in a few short weeks. West is now wrapping up TCAP testing and moving forward with our end of the year events and celebrations. There are many fun and exciting events and field trips coming up for all three grades levels. This is the time of year where our teachers really work to make the classroom come to life with experiential learning events. It’s a time when our teachers work to incorporate our 21st Century skills with students and promote college and workplace readiness. You will see your students participating in projects that are longer, more collaborative, more complex, and more comprehensive that much of the work that’s been done in classes to date. Our teachers have worked to find classroom chemistry and build the sense of community necessary to work together and accomplish big things during the last quarter of the year.
Thanks to those of you who attended parent conferences just two weeks ago. As always, the time you spend with teachers speaks volumes to the fact that education is a priority in our community. This collective spirit sets West apart from many other schools. Please continue to stay in touch with your child’s teachers and counselors if you have academic questions or con-cerns. We will continue to evaluate student progress throughout the spring as we develop student schedules for the 2012-2013 year.
I want to remind our parents that the quarter is rapidly coming to a close, with the third quarter grading period
ending before spring break. This is a great time to check in with teachers to see if students are following the plans agreed to at conferences. Feel free to contact your child’s teachers if you have any questions or concerns. You can do this via phone or email. Our counselors, administrators, and deans are also happy to help you as well. Please use your West Side Story as a resource to keep on top of school ac-tivities, PTCO events, and other im-portant scheduling information. Also remember that the West Weekly News (sent via email) from the PTCO is another great way to keep up on all of our happenings each week. As we work to go green and reduce printing and mailing costs, please access your West Side Story and other school infor-mation via the WMS website at www.west.ccsd.k12.co.us or from the district website at www.ccsd.k12.co.us. Warm Regards,

Nurse’s Notes-School Zones
School Zones The facts are shocking!! In the United States, about 5,000 pedestrians are killed by motor vehicles every year. Another 65,000 Americans are injured, many suffering serious injuries requiring hospitalization, sur-
gery, and long term medical treatment. Many victims never fully recover. Tragically, children under the age of 16 are at the greatest risk of becoming victims to careless drivers. This high risk group includes our mid-dle school students. We know our middle schoolers should be well aware of the basics of pedestrian safety by now, but we also know they are easily distracted and impulsive. We know that children cannot accurately judge vehicle dis-tances and speeds and often make unpredictable movements. The kids’ use of cell phones and music
players with head phones while walking greatly increases their vulnerability. Protect your child: Review traffic safety with them. It has probably been awhile. Tell them:
Be alert. Do not use distracting gadgets while crossing the street. Remove head phones. No talking on the phone. No texting. Remember the kindergarten lesson. Stop. Look. Listen.
Walk on sidewalks. If there are no sidewalks, walk on the shoulder of the road facing traffic.
Cross at marked intersections.
At intersections-stop and look-left, right, left again.
Obey all traffic signals.
See and be seen. Make eye contact with drivers at busy intersections. Wear bright clothing and reflective clothing at night.
Protect all children:
Be a safe driver, especially around our school. Slow down! Speed does kill. If a pedestrian is hit by a car going 20 mph, the pedestrian has a 80-90% chance of survival. If the same car were go-ing 5-10 mph faster, the pedestrian has a 90% chance of being killed. Always obey school zone speed limits.
Be patient. Everyone is in a hurry to start their day in the morning and get to afterschool activities. Rushing and thinking about the next thing rather than being fully present while driving is a set up for accidents. Drop off/pick up your kids in designated areas only. Fully stop the car before they get out-I know this seems obvious, but the opposite is frequently witnessed in the WMS drop off loop.
DO NOT be a distracted driver, most especially in our school zone. Keep your eyes on the road, your hands on the wheel and your mind on driving. Do not use your cell phone in our school zone. It is common knowledge at this point that cell phone use while driving is a dangerous distraction.
Be a good example. These kids will be behind the wheel themselves very soon. Remember, kids learn more from what we do than what we say. You do not want your 16 year old on the road and on the phone.
Together we can keep our children safe.

Non-Resident Applications
Students who are not residents of Cherry Creek School District must re-apply for each school year since applications are only approved on a one-year basis. The Non-Resident application window for the 2012-2013 school year begins Sunday, April 1. Applications will be available at West Middle School or the District Admissions Office beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, April 2. An online form will also be available April 2 on the Cherry Creek School District website at the following address: http://www.cherrycreekschools.org/Admissions/Pages/StudentRegistration.aspx. The online form will need to be printed and either mailed to West Middle School, faxed to 720-554-5186, or dropped off at the Counseling Office at West Middle School.
Intra-District Transfers If you missed the School of Choice window, there is still an opportunity to request a transfer within the Cher-ry Creek School District. Intra-District Transfer Request applications will be available at West Middle School in the Counseling Office beginning March 1, 2012. Applications will be processed as space becomes availa-ble and are typically only approved on a one-year basis. Report Cards The end of Quarter 3 is Friday, March 23. Report cards will be sent home with students after Spring Break on Friday, April 6. Keeping you informed of your child’s progress is very important to the staff at West Middle School. Your involvement in supporting your child is crucial to his or her success. You are encouraged to log on to PowerSchool at any time throughout the school year to view your child’s current grades. If you are concerned about your child’s progress, you can support his or her efforts by reinforcing the follow-ing suggestions:
Help your child set goals for grades this quarter. Reinforce that Quarter 3 ends on March 23 – there is still time to make a difference to final quarter
grades. Encourage your child to meet with his or her teachers. Encourage your child to make an effort and show positive behavior.
If you have any difficulty logging on to PowerSchool, please contact the Main Office at 720-554-5170.
Eighth graders from the metro Denver area compete annually to decide who can best express in an es-say ―What Freedom Means to Me‖. The contest is sponsored by local Sertoma Clubs and is the tradi-tional focal point of Sertoma’s National Heritage Program. At the local school level, 8th grade students partici-pate by writing a 400 word essay stating their inter-pretation of the meaning of freedom. The winners receive a prize, usually a treasury bond or cash and a plaque. Jerry Chen was the winner this year from West Mid-dle School. He attended a banquet, received a cash prize, and had his name added to West's plaque.
Congratulations, Jerry!

If your child has an appointment on a school day and will be leaving early, did you know if you send a note with your student in the morning (indicating your requested pick up time) your student can drop the note off at the Security/Attendance desk and your student will receive a pass that will let the teacher know what time he/she will be leaving. This procedure works so that your child is waiting for you when you come to the school.
If the need arises that you need to pick up your student unexpectedly, please call Security (720-554-5174) and Security will deliver a pass to your student and have them waiting for you. Please remember, we will ask to see your identification so don’t forget to bring it in the building with you.
Also, if you need to get a message to your student, call Security (720-554-5174), leave a message if no answer, and Security will get your message to your student.
Please remember, Security will not deliver items to your student during classes.
Here’s a brief explanation for the automated attendance calls you may get for unexcused absences in one or more classes:
Attendance calls are taken off the attendance line and comparisons are made to the student sign in/out
sheet and entered into PowerSchool between 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. The automated system, then col-lects all ―unexcused‖ marks in PowerSchool and compiles them in a report that the system uses to make the automated call. If you receive a call and have called the attendance line or signed in/out your student, it usually means we have received a higher than usual volume of calls and the system began it’s process before we could get finished. We are more than happy to correct your student’s attendance, but typically, if you do not receive another call in the evening, it means we have completed the updates and your student’s attendance has been corrected. Thank you in advance for your patience with this matter.
NO PARKING ON GREENRIDGE ROAD Parents, we’ve been reminded by our neighbors that Greenridge Road east of South Holly Street is a private road. The property owners along the road have decided not to allow anyone to use their road unless they have legitimate ―business‖ at one of the residences. The police department, the city, and the neighborhood association have all received complaints that parents have been parking on the road to wait and pick up their kids instead of pulling into the school’s parking lot.
The problem is that there is not a shoulder for this road, so when the parents park/stand they pull partial-ly into the front yards of the various residents. This has caused a lot of damage to the sod.
A sign has been posted informing individuals that the road private and parking/standing are not allowed. The residents have been working with the local police department in order to create a plan to enforce the trespassing ordinance on their behalf (since it is a private road it’s a trespassing violation instead of a parking violation). Greenwood Village PD will be working for a short period to educate par-ents before beginning with tickets. As always, thanks for your understanding and cooperation!

WMS’ 1st Annual Chili Cook Off—Huge Success!!
The first annual WMS Chili Cook Off was a huge success thanks to Kate Bergles and her chili team! There was loads of chili for the cook off contest, fun games for adults and kids, a ticket bidding auction, and a silent auction for some great ceramics from our very own art teacher, Craig Sisson. Three winners were an-nounced in different categories. In the ―Red Chili‖ category, 6th grader, Nick Williams, took first place, who, by-the-way, made his own entry. Marisela Plaza, mother of 8th grader, Angelo Plaza Martinez, took first place in the ―Other‖ category. Last but certainly not least, Sonia Perez Moreno, mother of 8th grader Daisy Herrera Perez and 6th grader Bryan Herrera won first place in the ―Chicken/Turkey‖ category. Thanks to everyone that submitted their entries. We’re already thinking of how much fun we’ll have next year!!

“Creating a Peaceful Family Environment”
Many parents struggle to find moments of peace as they face the growing demands
placed on families today. Children are growing up in a world filled with stimulation,
packed schedules, and considerably more stress than previous generations. Join us
to hear Dr. Kristen Race, founder of Mindful Life, and a discussion on how today’s world is affecting your
child’s development and how to find peace in chaotic times.
Discussion points will include:
Stress – How is it affecting your children?
Hidden Environmental Factors – What are they and how do they affect brain development?
Schedules, Stimulation, and Sleep – How does your family measure up?
Simple Family Activities – What can you do to increase your children’s ability to pay attention, in-
crease cognitive functioning, reduce stress and promote family happiness? Plan ahead to take a little time out of your day or take a few hours off of work and come to connect with other parents, be informed by local and national speakers, and get empowered to take a proactive ap-proach to parenting. All parents, school administrators and community members are welcome and en-couraged to attend Parent Information Network (PIN) presentations.

AVID students traveled to Fort Collins to tour the campus of Colorado State University on February 2nd. Students were joined by Ms. McCourt, Mrs. Jimenez, Mrs. Keogh, and Mrs. DeBall, who assisted them in a "scavenger hunt" around campus. We were lucky to include a stop in Braiden Hall to peek at a suite style dorm room, just before sitting down with a student panel of former WMS students. Jordan Baur, sophomore, and Rian Fugier, junior, fielded questions by stu-dents, and gave great information about college life and how they chose to attend CSU. We wrapped our college experience up with a stop for lunch in the Lory Student Center, before heading back home. AVID students represented WMS well while on campus! We might have some future Rams among us!

West Students Raise Over $12,000 To Help Kids Battling Cancer
Students at West recently participated in the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® Math-A-Thon program and raised $12,212.77 to help kids battling cancer and other deadly diseases. Since its inception more than 30 years ago, Math-A-Thon has become one of America’s largest education-based fundraisers. More than 10,000 schools across the country participate in the program every year. Math-A-Thon is also one of the most successful fund-raising campaigns for St. Jude, having raised nearly $400 million since its inception. Math-A-Thon allows students to build and practice essential math skills while they raise funds for kids battling cancer at St. Jude. The program works in the following way: Teachers serve as volunteer coordi-nators for Math-A-Thon at their school. Participating students solve math problems in a printed or online Funbook. Students ask family and friends for dona-tions in support of their participation in the Math-A-Thon. All donations are sent to St. Jude, where no child is ever turned away because of the family’s ina-bility to pay. About St. Jude St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is internation-ally recognized for its pioneering work in finding cures and saving children with cancer and other cat-astrophic diseases. St. Jude is the first and only pedi-atric cancer center to be designated as a Compre-hensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Insti-tute. Founded by late entertainer Danny Thomas and based in Memphis, Tenn., St. Jude freely shares its discoveries with scientific and medical communities around the world. St. Jude is the only pediatric can-cer research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance. No child is ever denied treatment because of the family’s inability to pay. St. Jude is financially supported by ALSAC, its fundraising organization. For more information, go to Way to go, West students!!
