  • High yielding, short season AH wheat with a very large grain size Best suited to mid-late sowings and performs best in shorter growing seasons especially with harsh finishes Possesses an excellent grain size (larger than Wyalkatchem) reduces the propensity for screenings Exhibits an MS rating for Crown Rot (highest commercially available) MR-MS for Yellow Spot, effective level of resistance on all three rusts Wheat

  • Emu Rock Westonia Emu Rocks crown rot tolerance (MS) was very visual in comparison to Westonia (VS) at the Landmark Yuna trial site in 2013
  • Slide 5
  • Tough, high yielding, Yitpi type, with improved stem rust and moderate CCN resistance High yielding Yitpi and Stylet derivative, slightly earlier maturing than Yitpi Improved stem rust resistance (MS) and YLS (S) over Yitpi Maintains Yitpis good sprouting and black point tolerance Good hectolitre weight and grain size equivalent to Yitpi Currently APW classification with AH potential Wheat

  • 2014 Varieties to keep an eye on! IGW4012 - Mid-long season Wyalkatchem derivative with exceptional yields and strong yellow leaf spot resistance Wyalkatchem and Spear parentage, with good disease resistance InterGrain yield data indicates that the variety has strong high end yield potential with favourable seasons (2011 & 13) whilst still performing well in tough seasons (2012) and lower rainfall environments Classification expected in spring 2014 and possibly available to growers in 2015 IGW3526 - Potential AH, Wyalkatchem derived, 2 gene Imidazolinone wheat with a large grain size, improved yield and disease resistance Mid-season CL plus Wyalkatchem type Best performance seen north of great eastern hwy Superior yellow spot resistance (MR-MS) Good wheat on wheat CL Plus option Large grain size, APW classification, pending LMA, possible 2014/15 grower release

  • IGW6042 Potential short-mid season noodle A supercharged potential Arrino alternative, with improved yield and udon noodle quality Early-mid maturing Arrino type with excellent udon noodle quality Good yellow leaf spot resistance Triple rust resistance Short variety Earliest release 2015 Wheat
  • Slide 8
  • IGW8000s Calingiri alternatives coming soon! Mid-long season, similar or slightly earlier maturing than Calingiri Superior yield and disease resistance over Calingiri, especially yellow leaf spot Some have 2-gene imi-tolerance Good grain size Earliest release is 2015/16 Wheat

  • Litmus Background Released as a feed variety in Spring 2013 and commencing malt accreditation in 2014 with possible accreditation in 2017 Grown in farmer strip trials in 2013 as well as NVT assessment Variable long term yield performance Potentially excellent malting quality but poor disease resistance Acid and Al tolerant variety
  • Slide 12
  • Litmus Background Appears best suited to the acid sand plains of the northern Ag Region of WA Poor performance in western and southern cereal-belt Understanding the areas which Litmus is best suited is the key for making money from this variety Caution: Will fungicide $$$ spent reduce the profit from the extra yield in high rainfall WMG area? Acid and Al tolerant variety

  • Bass Market Development CBH customers are beginning to request Bass for conduct of commercial scale brewing trials. This is an important step in the market development process. Chinese feedback has been positive so far (similar taste, smell etc to Baudin) and we await further feedback from larger tonnages sent last year. CBH have suggested that these positive indicators for the variety have led them to predict a possible $15-30 malt premium in 2014/15 and in future years possibly a Buloke type premium. InterGrain believes malting premiums for Bass will grow but the variety appears unlikely to be as popular as Baudin in the short medium term. Update

  • Flinders The Gairdner replacement Flinders is a medium-late maturing variety with excellent yield potential in the medium to high rainfall environments, exceeding both Baudin, Gairdner and Commander. Possesses excellent grain plumpness, test weight and straw strength, is shorter in height than Gairdner and presents as a robust option for the medium-high rainfall or for early sowing opportunities. Flinders has strong powdery mildew resistance and improved leaf rust resistance compared to Bass (following the breakdown of Rph3 resistance in Bass). Flinders has passed Stage 1 of the two year accreditation process and InterGrain had large tonnages of Flinders being produced during 2013, providing an excellent opportunity for successful commercial malting and brewing in the period 2014/15. Malsters have continued their interest in Flinders and large tonnages will continue to be grown in 2014 to further progress market development. Large tonnages will also be grown in the WMG area. Potentially available to growers in 2015

  • La Trobe Barley Australia request that La Trobe repeat year 2 of the accreditation process. Reason: seasonal and processing issues meant that there was not a suitable malt sample for pilot brewing. This was primarily due to the limited tonnage of grain within Malt 1 specifications of La Trobe from the 2012 harvest. Samples are only accepted for pilot brewing when all malt quality parameters are within brewing specifications, a task that is difficult when the original grain samples are either too high or too low in grain protein. Results from the commercial malting trials that have been conducted continue to be very positive (especially given the protein levels of the grain samples used), and have provided considerable optimism for the long term prospects for the variety amongst both maltsters and grain marketers who have a strong appetite for the variety. It is these results that give us sufficient confidence to go ahead with the release of La Trobe in 2014. Accreditation and commercialisation
