SEPTEMBER – NOVEMBER 2018 I ISSUE 1

MESSAGE FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR

Welcome to a new and exciting season of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra!

“From the heart, may it go further, to the heart!” is the famous inscription on thescore of Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis. I chose this motto since everyone of us atWSO – musicians, board and staff alike – are passionate about the music we’d liketo reach your hearts.

As the WSO’s new Music Director, I feel privileged and blessed presenting my firstseason built on a 70-year legacy of an institution so strongly embedded in thecommunity, so respected and loved in Winnipeg.

Like many of us, The Beatles played a significant role in my life as a teenager in the Soviet Union, where thegroup was actually banned for years. I am particularly excited about Classical Mystery Tour – A Tribute toThe Beatles, a show that presents some 30 Beatles tunes sung, played, and performed exactly as theywere written. The Beatles recorded with a 41-piece orchestra, so this is going to sound bigger than anyrecording you’ve ever heard!

For kids and parents alike – no one will leave without a smile after having fun at our Disney in Concert:A Silly Symphony Celebration. Groundbreaking cartoons by Walt Disney Studios accompanied by theiroriginal scores, performed live by full orchestra – it will be a real treat.

Continuing our commitment to presenting the finest scores of film music, we move on to Casablancawith Live Orchestra. Casablanca is often rated as one of the best movies ever and if you have not seen it yet – now is the time. Captivating performances by Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart and a fewiconic lines like “Here’s looking at you, kid” will spring to life like never before.

Our Masterworks concerts in September and October each feature works that have changed the course of music forever. Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 “Titan” is the symphony as much about space as it is about time. And however familiar it might sound to us in 21st century, when we hear this music, weshould try and recreate the sense of wonder that audiences felt during premiere of this revolutionarywork in Budapest in 1889.

Even more stunned were the audiences in Paris in May 1913 at the premiere of Igor Stravinsky’s “TheRite of Spring.” We have often heard about the riot it provoked when it was first performed, and eventhough I do not expect riots breaking out at Centennial Concert Hall, it is easy to comprehend why it wasso shocking, provocative and groundbreaking then. This iconic work is a ballet and our collaboration withBuffy Handel’s Aboriginal School of Dance and Odette Heyn-Projects will surely imbue performancewith joy and thrill of dance.

We are also excited to welcome young Canadian pianist Charles-Richard Hamelin for his debut withWSO. Silver medalist and laureate of the Krystian Zimerman award at the International Chopin PianoCompetition in 2015, he is surely an authority when it comes to performing Chopin’s 1st Piano Concerto.

There is much to discover and to enjoy in our season and I am confident that you will not leave after ourconcerts untouched and uninspired. You, our beloved audience, have a unique ability to inspire us musiciansto aim for the stars. And, rephrasing another iconic line from Casablanca:“We’ll always have music.”

PROGRAM NOTESby James Manishen

Overture to The Marriage of FigaroWolfgang Amadeus Mozartb. Salzburg / January 27, 1756d. Vienna / December 5, 1791Composed: 1785-1786First performance: May 1, 1786 (Vienna)Last WSO performance: 2015, AlexanderMickelthwate, conductor

The appointment of Venetian-born Lorenzo da Ponte byEmperor Joseph II as poet toVienna’s Imperial Theatres in1783 proved a godsend to

Mozart, a true man of the theatre whose firstlove was opera. When the two met soon after,da Ponte agreed to furnish a new librettowhen Mozart told him he had searchedthrough “hundreds of plays”hoping to findmaterial for a new opera. But nothinghappened until 1785, when Mozart cameupon the idea of fashioning an opera arounda recent and highly successful satiric comedyof manners entitled La Mariage de Figaro bythe French writer Beaumarchais.

The original play was written around 1781 andhad to wait three years before being produceddue to Louis XVI’s objections in the way itslammed the aristocracy. After the play becamea runaway hit in Paris in 1784, da Ponte wasable to convince the Emperor, who was equallywary of the subject matter, that he and Mozartcould make an opera buffa that would notshock conventionalities. Permission was granted.

“As fast as I wrote the words,”da Ponte told inhis memoirs,“Mozart wrote the music, and itwas all finished in six weeks.”The Overturewas composed just two days before the May1, 1786 premiere, which was a great successwith immediate encores demanded of manyof the numbers. The boisterous Overturecaptures the lively spirit and fast pace of the story.

Piano Concerto No. 1Frédéric Chopinb. Warsaw / March 1, 1810d. Paris / October 17, 1849Composed: 1830First performance: October 11, 1830 (Warsaw),Carlo Soliva, conductor; with the composer assoloistLast WSO performance: 2013; AlexanderMickelthwate, conductor; Umi Garrett, soloist

At the time 20-year-oldChopin composed thisconcerto, the concertworld was ruled by thetouring virtuoso,

equipped with technical extravagance, thundering volume and plenty ofshowmanship. The arrival of Paganinion the circuit in 1805 followed by Lisztin 1823 set the rules whereby if ayoung artist wanted success, he hadto both play his own music andensure he had something that couldbe performed with orchestra. Chopin’sPiano Concerto No. 1 was the second ofthe two piano concertos he composedin 1830 but the first to be published.

Chopin’s playing was the ultimate insensitivity and poetry, perhapsunequalled in the entire history of thepiano. Berlioz praised Chopin’sperforming style and music, with therequirement that “it is necessary tohear him at no great distance, rather inthe salon than in the theatre.”Chopinknew his intimate style well, quicklybecoming a much sought-after artistamong the private Parisian salons ofthe elite.

All one expects from Chopin’s maturestyle are in the E minor Concerto: theongoing flow of arresting melody, theease and variety of his harmonic turns, the inventive exploration of pianosonority and a finely constructedstoryline, if somewhat sparse in theorchestral contribution. The secondmovement “Romanze”is especiallymemorable, while the rondo-finale isan exuberant setting of the nativePolish dance, the Krakowiak.

Symphony No. 1Gustav Mahlerb. Bohemia / July 7, 1860d. Vienna / May 18, 1911Composed: 1883-1888, revised 1892-1893First performance: November 20, 1889(Budapest), conducted by the composerLast WSO performance: 2010;Alexander Mickelthwate, conductor

The First Symphony wasa special piece for Mahler. He conducted it moretimes than any of hisother later works. One

might suspect several reasons for this, not the least the love affairs thatinspired its creation – an affair in 1884

with one Johanne Richter, a singer atthe Cassel Opera where Mahler wasconducting (an affair which alsoinspired his Songs of a Wayfarer), and aliaison in 1887 with Marion Weber, thewife of the grandson of the composerCarl Maria von Weber. Mahleracknowledged these but referred tothem as the “occasion”of the FirstSymphony, not the “message.”

The work originally had fivemovements but the “Blumine”(Flora)second movement was dropped asMahler felt it not sufficientlysymphonic since it came fromincidental music he had written for a play.

The Symphony opens with a giantevocation of nature, starting with aseemingly unending string octaveover which the first appearance of adescending fourth figure arrives inthe woodwinds. This descendinginterval of the fourth unites the otherfour movements and runs through allof them.

Cuckoos, hunting horns and quotesfrom the Wayfarer songs are heard asthe music speeds up. More Wayfarerreferences appear in the Scherzo aswell as the middle of the thirdmovement, whose grotesqueharmonies and strident orchestrationfollow an eerie rendering of FrèreJacques from the solo double bass.

This mock funeral march was inspiredby a woodcut of Moritz von Schwindtentitled How the Animals Bury theHunter and was attacked by the criticsof the time, especially in Vienna wherethe prevailing conservatism felt that asymphony should not have such asubversive, even evil reference toNature.

The finale is a great storm ofexcitement and a journey fromInferno to Paradise with majestichunting horns (their “bells in the air,”Mahler instructs) and a stunningaffirmation of Mahler’s friend andcolleague, conductor Bruno Walter’sview of the Symphony:“the youthfulwork of genius…the unconditionalcourage to use new ways ofexpression…the pulse beat of ferventpassion.”

Three Dance Variations fromFancy FreeLeonard Bernsteinb. Lawrence, MA / August 25, 1918d. New York / October 14, 1990Composed: 1944First performance: April 18, 1944(New York), conducted by the composerLast WSO performance: 2005, DavidItkin, conductor

Leonard Bernstein tookNew York City by stormwhen, on his 25thbirthday in 1943, he wasnamed both assistant

conductor of the New YorkPhilharmonic and recipient of acommission from New York’s BalletTheater for his first ballet, Fancy Free, which would also mark the debut ofchoreographer Jerome Robbins.Thepremiere at the Metropolitan OperaHouse was a smash hit, playing 99times in New York that year andpaving the way for a collaboration thesame year between Bernstein, AdolphGreen and Betty Comden for theBroadway musical On the Town, whichused the same story but different music.

Bernstein summarized the plot ofFancy Free: “From the moment theaction begins, the ballet is strictlyyoung America of 1944.The curtainrises on a street corner with alamppost, a side-street bar and NewYork skyscrapers picked out with acrazy pattern of lights, making a dizzybackdrop.Three sailors explode onthe stage; they are on shore leave inthe city and on the prowl for girls.”

Bernstein fashioned an orchestral suitefrom the score. In the Three DanceVariations, the three sailors devise acontest to determine which of themwould keep company with two girlsthey’ve just met.The sailors are todance; the girls will pick two winnersand the loser will disappear. The firstcontestant dances a punchy Galop; thenext does a lyrical Waltz; the third sailorgoes Latin as the orchestra plays aCuban Danzon. Unfortunately for them, the contest produces no result.

Suite from Der RosenkavalierRichard Straussb. Munich, Germany / June 11, 1864d. Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany /September 8, 1949Composed: 1909-1910First performance: January 26, 1911(Dresden), Ernst von Schuch, conductor Last WSO performance: 1997,Bramwell Tovey, conductor

In the last dozenyears of the 19thcentury, nocomposer’s newestofferings were more

anticipated than the tone poems ofRichard Strauss, and he didn’tdisappoint. Each one stretched thelimits of what programmaticorchestral music could be, both inthe use of orchestral resources andpsychological probing. When hisoperas Salome appeared in 1905and Elektra three years later, Straussclearly wore the mantle of musicalmodernist par excellence. But withhis new opera in 1910, Strauss didan about-face.

Leaked to the Berlin press beforethe premiere, Der Rosenkavalier’spremise would be a bittersweetlookback to 18th-century Vienna, astory of love and longing ripe withcatchy melodies mostly in thethree-four time of the waltz.Thelibretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthalwas a warmly affectionate pasticheof sentiment and wit thatpoignantly examined both theyoung love of Octavian and Sophieand the fading youth of thearistocratic Marschallin.

Der Rosenkavalier caught on likewildfire in Dresden following thepremiere and acclaim quicklyspread throughout Europe asproductions became mounted inall its major capitals. Soon after, instrumental arrangements of DerRosenkavalier’s music began toappear in many combinations, including a sequence of waltzes thecomposer compiled in 1944.Thearranger of this other orchestralsuite from 1945 has never beenidentified, though it is thought thatthe conductor Artur Rodzinski mayhave had some involvement.

The Rite of SpringIgor Stravinskyb. Oranienbaum, Russia / June 5/17, 1882d. New York / April 6, 1971Composed: 1910-1913; revised in 1921 & 1943First performance: May 29, 1913 (Paris), PierreMonteux, conductor Last WSO performance: 2010, AlexanderMickelthwate, conductor

Igor Stravinsky had a visionwhile he was completing TheFirebird in 1910: a solemn paganrite where a group of wiseelders seated in a circle watch a

young girl dance herself to death to appeasethe god of spring.Thinking that this could bean exciting ballet (not knowing his score wouldlater become the most influential work of the20th-century), Stravinsky asked for input fromhis friend Nicholas Roerich, an authority onancient Slavic legend, and Serge Diaghilev, director of the Ballet Russe that had commissionedThe Firebird. Both jumped at the idea.

Stravinsky wanted to convey “the surge ofspring, the magnificent upsurge of naturereborn”as inspired by his childhood memoriesin Russia of “the earth cracking,”as he recalled. He developed a libretto with Roerich aroundancient Slavic ideas of earthly joy. Bold newmusic unlike anything ever before was to be therule.“I was guided by no design,”Stravinskywrote.“I heard, and I wrote what I heard.”

Intense preparations went on for the premierewithout a hint of the now famous melee thattook place at the Théâtre des Champs-Elyséeson May 29. Just after the music started, a riotbroke out with shrieks and catcalls from theaudience punctuated by fistfights and whistles.Diaghilev flashed the houselights on and offto try to calm things down. Debussy called fororder while Ravel stood up shouting “genius, genius.”Puccini called the score the “creationof a madman.”A furious Stravinsky ran fromthe theatre while a cool Pierre Monteux keptconducting the score to the end.

Yet as the work began to be heard on its own, audiences took to its slashing new style.Within a year, more and more listeners beganto understand that revolutionary music asbold as this could be a truly special experience.

The Rite of Spring is filled with hard hittingdissonance, galvanic irregular rhythms and adeliberate primitivism using ostinato(repeated) rhythms and simple melodicmaterials within a complex harmonicstructure. No work has had a greater impacton the music of its time than this.

PROGRAM NOTESby James Manishen

The Abduction from theSeraglio: OvertureWolfgang Amadeus Mozartb. Salzburg / January 27, 1756d. Vienna / December 5, 1791Composed: 1781First Performance: July 16, 1782(Vienna), conducted by thecomposerLast WSO performance: 2005,Andrey Boreyko, conductor

Mozart knew he was aman of the theatrewhen he moved toVienna in 1781. At age25, he had enough of

the service of the archbishop ofSalzburg and had just received atentative offer from the NationalSingspiel Theatre’s residentpoet/director Gottlieb Stephanie tocompose a German comic opera, asrequested by Emperor Joseph II in itsmandate to advance stage works inthe native language.

Stephanie offered Mozart a librettotitled Die Entführung aus dem Serail(The Abduction from the Seraglio), alively story set in 16th-century Turkeyof an Englishwoman Konstanzecaptured by pirates and her eventualrescue from the harem by her loverBelmonte. With exotic “orientalism”invogue at the time, ripe with drums, cymbals and triangle from whatEuropeans associated with theJanissary bands, Mozart had a fieldday capitalizing on his theatricalinstincts and carefully prepared ascore perfect for the occasion. It wasa huge hit but though it wasMozart’s first acclaim as a musicaldramatist, he didn’t receive muchrevenue from the 16 performancesat the Burgtheater. Still, he felt secureenough in his new-found fame totake Constanze Weber as his wife onAugust 4, 1782.

The Overture dances and sparkles, with a middle section drawn fromBelmonte’s air that opens the first act.

Symphony No. 40Wolfgang Amadeus MozartComposed: 1788Last WSO performance: 2010, CristianMandeal, conductor

In less than two months Mozart produced thetowering masterpieces of his orchestraloutput, Symphonies 39, 40 and 41.Thoughone cannot simplify the striking wealth ofresource in No. 40, it may be fair to say that inits key of G minor and the symphony’simpassioned moods and restless intensity mayvery well be in response to the tragicconditions Mozart was living under at the time.

Mozart was 32 in the summer of 1788, indeclining health and with only three yearsto live. His wife was in failing health and theyhad just lost their six-month-old daughter. His opera Don Giovanni was not wellreceived in May, not much was on Mozart’splate performance-wise and he was deeplyin debt. Those two summer months may bethe most magical period of musical creationin the history of the art.

No. 40 is a work at the crossroads of theClassical and Romantic eras – a phenomenalhappening that seems to live in both worldsat the same time. Here the orderly ways ofthe Classical period find themselvesamalgamated to a new and vivid power ofself- expression which Beethoven was totake up and run with. All that, coupled witha masterly technical skill produce a trulygripping experience in No. 40, no matterhow many times you hear it.

Orchestral Suite No. 4“Mozartiana”Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovskyb. Votkinsk, Russia / May 7, 1840d. St. Petersburg, Russia / November 6, 1893Composed: 1887First performance: November 26, 1887(Moscow), conducted by the composerLast WSO performance: 1985,Kazuhiro Koizumi, conductor

Tchaikovsky was never moreeffusive than when hewould praise Mozart’sgenius as the reason hedecided to devote his life to

music. Mozart was the only composer livingor dead that Tchaikovsky went into raptures

over throughout his life, writing in his diarythat Mozart inspired “nearness to thatsomething which we call ideal.”

In Tchaikovsky’s view, Mozart’s opera DonGiovanni stood above all his other works. InMay 1884,Tchaikovsky decided torecognize the 100th anniversary of theopera’s premiere on October 29, 1787 bywriting a suite based on small, lesser-known Mozart compositions.

Tchaikovsky began work on the suite inJune 1887, continuing over the summer inBorzhom in the Caucasus while visiting hisbrother Anatol, and in Aachen where hespent six weeks nursing a sick friend.ThatAugust,Tchaikovsky completed the scorein Aachen. The premiere was scheduled onthe first all-Tchaikovsky concert conductedby the composer in Moscow on November26, 1887 and it turned out to be a triumph.

However sincerely done,Tchaikovsky’s vastresources in orchestration considerablyoverride the effect of Mozart’s originals, inpart since the Mozart models used are notespecially characteristic of his style.Theresult is a valentine painted inTchaikovsky’s broadest brush strokes.

The opening Gigue comes from a little pianopiece (K. 574) Mozart penned on May 16,1789 into the musical notebook of CarlEngel, the Leipzig court organist. It recallsEngel’s great predecessor Johann SebastianBach in its light contrapuntal style.Thefollowing Menuet comes from a keyboarddance Mozart composed in Vienna in 1789.

For the Preghiera (Prayer) movement,Tchaikovsky draws from one of Mozart’slast works, the motet Ave verum corpus.Rather than the using the original choralversion,Tchaikovsky’s model is a floridpiano transcription by Franz Liszt titled A laChapelle Sistine.

The closing movement variations uses atheme Mozart had improvised at a concertin 1783. Based on a buffo aria from Gluck’scomic opera Die Pilger von Mecca, about theCalendar Monk who feasts on wine anddelicatessen while the commoners imaginehim living on fruit and milk, it became thestarting point for some of Mozart’s finestvariations for a piano setting in 1784 (K. 455).
