Get to Know Your Appendix and Cecum!

• Your appendix and cecum are located in the lower right abdominal area. They are used to help break down food and move food through the digestion cycle.

~ANATOMY X 2!!~• Your appendix

is a blind ended tube that is attached to your cecum.

• This is an embryonic development! (it developed when you were an embryo!)

• Your cecum is a sack-like structure that is part of the colon.

• It is the start of you large intestine!

~PHYSIOLOGY X 2~• ABSOLUTELY NO

FUNCTION TO THE BODY WHAT-SO-EVER!!

• JK new studies have shown that it protects bacteria necessary for the colon to function!

• The cecum absorbs fluids and salts remaining in the small intestine and breaks them down with mucus.

• The cecum receives the undigested food from the small intestine.

HOW DO I GET THERE?!• Your appendix is

located in the lower right section of the abdomen.

• In the right iliac fossa! (you know where that is!!)

• Your cecum is located right below you small intestine.

• It is the beginning of your large intestine and the appendix branches off of it.

• And also occupies the right iliac fossa!

Appendicitis & Typhlitis• Appendicitis is inflammation of

the appendix resulting from obstruction of the appendix lumen. The appendix then fills with mucus and swells which increases pressure and causes pain. The pressure then causes breaks in the appendix wall and bacteria begins to leak out of the dying walls. Pus then is formed around the outside of the appendix and eventually the appendix can rupture and cause death.

• Typhlitis is inflammation of the cecum caused by bacteria in your gut called gram negative enteric commensal bacteria.

• Can also lead to infection of the cecum.

Signs and Symptoms!• Symptoms of

Appendicitis are pain, loss of appetite, fever, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, and a feeling of all around bad health. The abdominal wall becomes weak and very sensitive.

• Symptoms of Typhilitis are a distended abdomen, fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and tenderness, and diarrhea.

Diagnosis Process• Appendicitis requires a

physical and thorough family history. Then a white blood count is needed to check for elevation. Next they take a urinalysis which can detect red and white blood cells as well as bacteria in the urine. X-rays and ultrasounds are needed next to detect enlargements. Finally, barium enema is administered to patient.

• Typhlitis requires a radiograph can show abnormalities in your cecum. Also a barium enema is needed. Next an angiograph is required and finally CT or ultrasound.

Treating the Nastiest!• Appendicitis

results in removal of the appendix. The body is able to function normal without it.

• Typhlitis can be cured with drugs and biological agents suggested by your doctor.

DID YOU KNOW?• The longest appendix ever

removed was 26cm!!(normal appendix 2-20cm)

• In Latin the word for appendix means “worm-shaped”!

• Your appendix’s lower half can move about freely AND DOES!

• In primates the appendix is larger and used to digest leaves!
