PRELUDE

Aria John S. Dixon

OPENING HYMN: All my hope on God is founded (vv. 1-3) Hymnal 665

1. All my hope on God is founded; he doth still my trust renew,

me through change and chance he guideth, only good and only true.

God unknown, he alone calls my heart to be his own.

2. Mortal pride and earthly glory, sword and crown betray our trust;

though with care and toil we build them, tower and temple fall to dust.

But God's power, hour by hour, is my temple and my tower.

3. God's great goodness e'er endureth, deep his wisdom, passing thought:

splendor, light and life attend him, beauty springeth out of naught.

Evermore from his store newborn worlds rise and adore.

OPENING ACCLAMATION BCP p. 355

Celebrant Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

People And blessed be God’s kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.

HYMN OF PRAISE: O bless the Lord, my soul (v. 3) Hymnal 411

He will not always chide; he will with patience wait;

his wrath is ever slow to rise and ready to abate.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant Let us pray.

Almighty God, you have given your only Son to be for us a sacrifice for sin, and also

an example of godly life: Give us grace to receive thankfully the fruits of his redeeming

work, and to follow daily in the blessed steps of his most holy life; through Jesus Christ

your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now

and for ever. Amen.

THE EPISTLE Ephesians 5:15-20

Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of

the time, because the days are evil. So do not be foolish, but understand what the will

of the Lord is. Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with

the Spirit, as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves,

singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks to God the Father

at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Reader The Word of the Lord.

People Thanks be to God.

PSALM 34:9–14 (sung in unison) Benedicam Dominum

Anglican Chant by Sam Doyle

9 Fear the LORD, you that are his / saints, *

for those who fear him lack / nothing.

10 The young lions lack and suffer / hunger, *

but those who seek the LORD lack nothing that is / good.

11 Come, children, and listen to / me; *

I will teach you the fear of the / LORD.

12 Who among you loves / life *

and desires long life to enjoy pros- / perity?

13 Keep your tongue from evil- / speaking *

and your lips from lying / words.

14 Turn from evil and do / good; *

seek peace and pur- / sue it.

THE HOLY GOSPEL John 6:51–58

Celebrant The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this

bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my

flesh.”

The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his

flesh to eat?” So Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of

the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Those who eat my flesh

and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; for my

4

flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. Those who eat my flesh and drink my

blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because

of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that came

down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one

who eats this bread will live forever.”

Celebrant The Gospel of the Lord.

People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

[email protected].

Summer Volunteer Help Needed for Abundant Life

St. Andrew’s volunteers have been helping deliver food boxes to our East Greensboro

neighbors on Tuesday afternoons as part of our community’s commitment to the

Abundant Life ministry. The work is well organized by Audra Abt, and it’s easy for a

beginner to fit into the flow. The arrival time at Holy Spirit Church on Yanceyville

Street is 1:00 and the work is done by 3:30. We need some St. Andrew’s folks to

volunteer to help out for August 17, August 31, and September 7. You can sign up for

one or more Tuesdays. Call Virginia Haskett at 336-482-7411 or Barbara Van Cleve at

336-707-8355 to sign up for one, two, or all three shifts.

Celebration of New Ministry Gifts

We are working on special gifts for our new rector, Rev. Ginny Inman, on the occasion

of her installation as Rector of St. Andrew’s, at the Celebration of New Ministry on

September 15. Visit https://abundant.co/standrewsepiscopalch/give to make a

donation and be part of this gift giving opportunity. (Be sure to select “New Ministry

Gift” as the fund for your online gift. You will need to scroll to the bottom of the listed

funds to see this option.) Checks may be mailed as well, with “Celebration of New

Ministry” on the memo line. Please know that the plate offering at the September 15th

service will all go to Rev. Ginny’s discretionary fund. For more information, contact

Shelley Kappauf at [email protected] or 336-404-0177.
